  • He's a cello ninja

  • What is the use of his eyeglasses? he kept on closing his eyes.

  • 5:01 is the best part

  • around 5:03 am i the only one who noticed him look at the firsts and smile and open his eyes? then he looked at conductor. lol Go yo-yo MA! awsome Celloist! fty i am not trolling lol

  • My soul is going to get out of my body! :O

  • the conductor makes hilarious poses xD

  • Yeah. I'm working on this right now in college... Hoooooolly crap.

  • he is the best!!!!!!

  • @the09G they're both really similar.

  • musicgasam

  • he looks like he's having orgasm

  • To be quite honest, after listening to Jacqueline Du Pré, this is nothing!

  • @the09G To be quite honest, after seeing so many internet trolls, you are nothing

  • i am a profession cellist too, i am sry but 1:40 lul cmon XD

  • @IliekPVP ... Why are you sorry and what do you mean?

  • @IliekPVP you're also a liar, and judging by your channel you're a WoW nerd

  • @McSplat Nah i am not a liar but i am a wow nerd... I am playing with a seven more cello players in this Friday on a concert so if i record it i can post it its not a problem... But the sad part is why are you judging other ppl over internet... I pity you

  • it's like he recorded himself playing...

  • I love watching someone, regardless of the instrument, really enjoying doing something incredibly difficult.

  • 6.15 I hate that !!

  • omg so amazing

  • If this is not sexual excitement then I am Napoleon Buonaparte.

  • Comment removed

  • @kamvysis You must be napoleon... this is musical passion not sexual, you'll know once you feel it ( musical passion not sexual)

  • @kamvysis lol. i think this movment was played too slow though

  • @specter290 I think that if this is played faster, we cannot fully appreciate the piece.

  • @GGbreizh whats the story haydn is trying to tell us with this particular song?

  • Comment removed

  • I hate how professionals always make everything look easy.

  • this may actually be one of the best performances of yo-yo ma's ever. not simply because he is unbelievably in tune, but because of the way he sells his skills, and interacts with the music in a way many of us wish we could.

  • he pretty much did that with his eyes closed

  • heavenly. facial expressions of Yo-yo-but synthesize the shivers on my skin :) Here touches the soul.

  • Yo yo ma looks so young!! For this age...playing like that....a completly genius!

  • thumbs up if u lol'd at yoyo ma's facial expressions

  • this is really terrific...

  • this is the way t plat this concerto...

  • he reminds me of larry from veggie tales.

  • fantasztikus..........

  • i think M.Rostropovich is better

  • i can't believe it is really him o_o

  • i love how at around 4:10 the conductor is doing some cool dance XD

  • @jinjoshorts XD haha so cool!

  • @jinjoshorts AHAHAH 4:10 IS THE BEST!

  • He looks like the guy in Napoleon Dynamite with the way he let's his mouth hang open. Very funny.

  • @rolfeder lol

  • I'm playing this piece, I'm 11. It's hard!

  • @NalonYneef How long have you been playing? Study tat piece that piece only and in time you will get it.

  • @NalonYneef you are 11?? o_O

  • Interesting how Chang centers herself around her instrument with such intensity contrasting with ma's more romantic style

  • 4:10 omg omg omg xD this conductor is incredible awesome

  • That's John Williams the same guy who wrote Star Wars and Indiana Jones and all that stuff.

  • Comment removed

  • i love both.. Ma's and Chang's versions even they are both so much different

  • Great stuff! Incredible precision.

  • this concerto was discovered in Prague in 1961.

  • l've heard Chang's and Rostropovich's versions and l must say that l prefer Ma's interpretation and style the most hands down no questions asked.

  • Is he using a strad?

  • Possibly. It depends on when this was recorded. If it was before 1987, most likely not. He didn't play on a Strad until then (he started using Du Pre's Strad when she died in 1987).

  • What wonderful restraint. An absolute pleasure to listen to.

  • the harpsichord player looks like a bobble-head haha

  • @lalaworld366

LOL!! Dude just shut up. Saying this performance has "much room for improvement" is extremely pretentious. And this is about 160 bpm, so...basically you're just wrong overall.

  • @lalaworld366 o snap!!! ShadnicK826 went there!

  • haaha coming from you i bet you can't even hold a cello right.

  • What year was this played?

  • that is BY FAR the tackiest i have ever seen symphony hall look...

  • @bpconductor2282 But this is one of the greatest symphony hall.

  • @GGbreizh ive never been to a concert hall that sounds better

  • .....nobody can play this concerto like Chang.....not Ma, Maisky, Casals, Webber, Rostropovich, Fournier....they just do not equal Chang.......yes, they are great, but Chang is greater.....

  • I do not agree with you. Mr. Yo-Yo-Ma play brilliante clean. No body can play like this mayby M.Rostropovich played when he was youg.

    This is the best video.

  • If you godo musicien you should understand different is not only in technique and palying, the different is playing style, close sound, line of sound. mading stability line of sound, vibrato, This is the different between Greater's.

  • oh yes, of course is bettrer... with all her note out of tune, and her notes-rushing technique... better than yo-yo, Maisky...Rostropovich! oh please you don´t know anything.

  • Williams looks like he's having an absolute ball conducting this piece. I recall him stating Haydn to be one of his earlier influences.

  • The first movement of this concerto is incredible. One can hardly believe it was written around 1762. Haydn is one of the most pivotal figures in classical music.

  • pelle d'oca - goose-flesh

  • I'm a Rostropovich fan myself, Yo Yo is great, love du Pre too, but I really have the most fun watching Ha Na Chang play this piece.

  • yea I've just finished this

    it was really hard

    arm hurts a lot

  • This looks incredibly hard.. I do the same thing he does when I concentrate that hard on something.. Its cool to see.. also the piece though it looks light hearted and simple.. has some very intricate movements.. Not a favorite of mine.. but obviously difficult.

  • I'm workin on it right now and yeah its crazy hard and its actually more diff than it looks to make it light hearted and simple

  • Yo Yo Ma is AMAZING!! I love this piece it sounds so gorgeous and full

  • OMG, most underrated (difficulty wise) piece in cello repertoire!! With every cellist (professional) I have spoken with, they say it is one of the most difficult to perform perfectly in front of an audience!

  • And the Concerto in D is more difficult.... but this one is more beautiful!

  • i agree with them.

    Whot he hell u think u r?

    president?

    or just a sucker.

His face and his ''talent'' is innate.

And the piece, Haydn C major.

Can be perfrom in any style, it depends on people.

You don't like him because you jealous him??

  • Yes! And I believe YO-YO is the best cellist ever, not just because of skills but because of his unique knowledge and understanding of music. Among so many versions of the same piece or concerto, I always find YO-YO's is the best!

  • Ever heard of Jacqueline Du Pre? Probably not.

  • You are wrong about this.

Maybe you think Du Pre is the best cellist. That's fine. I respect that. Everybody's opinion is somewhat different. When we say who is best it just means we really like that artist. Actually those amzing cellists express music in their own ways, and we cannot say who's better.

  • Ever heard of Julian Lloyd Webber?

    Ever heard of Mtislav Rostropovich?

    Ever heard of Mischa Maisky?

    Ever Heard of Pau Casals?

    Ever heard of Pierre Fournier?

Men, if you like Jackie's way, that's fine, But that doesn't mean that is better than everybody!

Points of view, my dear, points of view

  • I know it's no where near as good as Yo-Yo Ma's performance (He's the greatest!!!), but please check mine out and leave comments!

I can't post a link in a comment, but look up "moderndivinci" and you'll find it!

  • lool best move I've ever seen from a conductor at 4:09 !^^

  • You noticed that too! Williams is every bit the consumate conducter that he is a composer. He looks in a bout of ecstasy conducting what I think is the climax of the piece.

  • you are incredibly ignorant

  • What's wrong with cultural diffusion? What's wrong with playing a different nation's piece? What's wrong with Asians playing Western music? Will it kill people? No... why can't you just accept this?

  • who the fuck do you think you are? if i were in a good mood i'd tell you to listen to russell peters and what he has to say about the whole world turning beige, but i'm not. instead i'll ask you how you can possibly be so incredibly arrogant by limiting what people do based on their cultural background? again, who the fuck do you think you are?

  • what are you talking about???

his can do whatever he wants with his face. he listens so intently and feels through the fingerboard so thoroughly that his performance is flawless. every note is not only in tune, but hits the sweet spot where it rings the most.

where do you come from anyway?? what gives you the right to generalize about an entire race and say that are "flat and expressionless"?? i pity you and those who may even come close to your level of ignorance.

  • i agree. i think it's so completely irrelevant that he is Asian and the composer was caucasion. all that matters is the music and not the musician's race.

  • @PASTREEE878 and, he IS american...

  • Now whenever I watch Yo-Yo Ma play, I'm going to have to imagine what must be on the ceiling that is so fascinating.

  • Yo Yo Ma wasn't looking at the ceiling. He wasn't looking at anything. He was just immersed whole-heartedly in the music.

  • take a joke dude

  • i know right that's just his thing he does when plays

  • I personally prefer Du Pre's, but this is a great performance as well.

  • He had the davidov converted to a baroque cello (gut strings, no endpin, different tailpiece*maybe*.) He uses his Montagnana for other stuff.

  • Actually, it has since been reconfigured for more modern music.

  • I can only agree with you

  • Everybody who says that Lloyd-Webber is best (it does not matter in what) has no clou of cello :P

  • @Thomascello So Lloyd sucks? Just wondering

  • @xbasket12x lets say: sometimes.

  • @Thomascello O_O Can't help but agree with you. But he does have high musicality

  • is a perfect interpretation!!! yo yo ma is my favorite don`t worry abaute the mute

  • Yo-Yo ma has a mute on his cello and he still plays so loud... do u know wat kind of cello it is?

  • the mute isn't on the bridge, so its not really muting it at all

  • He play Dupre's Davidoff Stradavari Cello

  • Yeah he has the Davidoff, but he only uses it for VERY Baroque pieces. This is his Montagnana I think.

  • Haydn is classicism, i think :) and I also think Stradivari is used for VERY romantic pieces too, because it has such a rich and sonor tone :)

  • I'm not sure about that but whatever. They're both incredible cellos!

  • I agree. The Davidoff-Stradivari is, as I remember, very difficult to play (they say it's some kind of pigheaded), and that should have been the reason why Jackie du Pré looked for another one in the 70s

  • I don't think he used his Montagnana cello for this... the recording quality seems too old for that.

  • this is soo awesome i had no idea this was on youtube, I dont know how u found this footage but i love u for it

  • wonderful!
