around 5:03 am i the only one who noticed him look at the firsts and smile and open his eyes? then he looked at conductor. lol Go yo-yo MA! awsome Celloist! fty i am not trolling lol
@McSplat Nah i am not a liar but i am a wow nerd... I am playing with a seven more cello players in this Friday on a concert so if i record it i can post it its not a problem... But the sad part is why are you judging other ppl over internet... I pity you
this may actually be one of the best performances of yo-yo ma's ever. not simply because he is unbelievably in tune, but because of the way he sells his skills, and interacts with the music in a way many of us wish we could.
I would really like to see a video with Ma playing John Williams' cello concerto (and with John Williams conducting), I love his way of playing... I don't know a lot of cello player but for me, he is the best.
And if there is someone who understand the most music, it is certainly John Williams. When he conducts a work, it is always perfect. When he composes a work, it is still perfect...
Possibly. It depends on when this was recorded. If it was before 1987, most likely not. He didn't play on a Strad until then (he started using Du Pre's Strad when she died in 1987).
LOL!! Dude just shut up. Saying this performance has "much room for improvement" is extremely pretentious. And this is about 160 bpm, so...basically you're just wrong overall.
.....nobody can play this concerto like Chang.....not Ma, Maisky, Casals, Webber, Rostropovich, Fournier....they just do not equal Chang.......yes, they are great, but Chang is greater.....
If you godo musicien you should understand different is not only in technique and palying, the different is playing style, close sound, line of sound. mading stability line of sound, vibrato, This is the different between Greater's.
oh yes, of course is bettrer... with all her note out of tune, and her notes-rushing technique... better than yo-yo, Maisky...Rostropovich! oh please you don´t know anything.
The first movement of this concerto is incredible. One can hardly believe it was written around 1762. Haydn is one of the most pivotal figures in classical music.
This looks incredibly hard.. I do the same thing he does when I concentrate that hard on something.. Its cool to see.. also the piece though it looks light hearted and simple.. has some very intricate movements.. Not a favorite of mine.. but obviously difficult.
OMG, most underrated (difficulty wise) piece in cello repertoire!! With every cellist (professional) I have spoken with, they say it is one of the most difficult to perform perfectly in front of an audience!
Yes! And I believe YO-YO is the best cellist ever, not just because of skills but because of his unique knowledge and understanding of music. Among so many versions of the same piece or concerto, I always find YO-YO's is the best!
Maybe you think Du Pre is the best cellist. That's fine. I respect that. Everybody's opinion is somewhat different. When we say who is best it just means we really like that artist. Actually those amzing cellists express music in their own ways, and we cannot say who's better.
You noticed that too! Williams is every bit the consumate conducter that he is a composer. He looks in a bout of ecstasy conducting what I think is the climax of the piece.

After hearing so many Asians play western music, I have come to the conclusion that they should stick to Asian music.
BTW: I wonder what was on the ceiling during this performance. It seems to have distracted Mr. Ma every time he came to a fast passage, causing him to squint and gimace.
I didn't know that playing a C major scale in sixteenths @144 to the quarter note was such a painful experience.
What's wrong with cultural diffusion? What's wrong with playing a different nation's piece? What's wrong with Asians playing Western music? Will it kill people? No... why can't you just accept this?
I totally agree. It's like white people trying to play jazz. They just look pathetic bopping their heads in pale imitation of the greats--it's just not in their DNA. For that matter, I can't stand it when non-Spaniards try flamenco (I mean, have you ever seen an Englishman try his hands at palmas? A disgrace!). And another pet peeve of mine, Russians playing Western music. I mean, go back to the steppes, Cossacks! We don't want your melodramatic hands all over Bach. Get a life, loser.
who the fuck do you think you are? if i were in a good mood i'd tell you to listen to russell peters and what he has to say about the whole world turning beige, but i'm not. instead i'll ask you how you can possibly be so incredibly arrogant by limiting what people do based on their cultural background? again, who the fuck do you think you are?
his can do whatever he wants with his face. he listens so intently and feels through the fingerboard so thoroughly that his performance is flawless. every note is not only in tune, but hits the sweet spot where it rings the most.
where do you come from anyway?? what gives you the right to generalize about an entire race and say that are "flat and expressionless"?? i pity you and those who may even come close to your level of ignorance.
i agree. i think it's so completely irrelevant that he is Asian and the composer was caucasion. all that matters is the music and not the musician's race.
I agree. The Davidoff-Stradivari is, as I remember, very difficult to play (they say it's some kind of pigheaded), and that should have been the reason why Jackie du Pré looked for another one in the 70s
