  • MANLY TEARS WHEN I HEAR THIS SONG!

  • I saw this on sci fi channel. Well done with the lensman and vampire hunter d

  • ha ha ha...I remenber this cartoons. really nice short film.

  • What a burst of nostalgia! I saw Robot Carnival way back when, just as I was first getting into anime. And this sequence was one of my favorites. So nice to see it again. Thanks for posting!

  • This Was One Of My Favorite Scenes

  • I love the Tetsuo and Akira easter egg.

  • *smack* dude, you deserved that....

  • This is the third anime I've seen with facial art like Akemi from Urotsukidoji. Makes you feel a rape scene coming on !

  • nice.

  • Colonel Shikishima makes an appearance as well,, the guy who kinda looks after the other 3 that had power in akira

  • Looks like it's set in Disneyworld. That first bit is definitely Space Mountain, one of the best rides there.

  • Sounds like old Final Fantasy series for Famicom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • That girl is such a pain in the ass. And what did the blond guy do to deserve a slap in the face?

  • @GalacticBloopy He was juggling multiple women so it would seem. That deserves a slap.

  • Why is everyone circle jerking over being born in the 80s or having lived through the 90?

  • @BetNoire You would be too if you were born in the 80's.

  • @BetNoire I ain't even mad. :D

  • holy crap Tetsuo i had no idea

  • @BushidoMH Saturday Anime was on Sci-fi.

  • Hey its Char.

  • @kainemaxwell= And I saw Tetsuo as well.

  • Am I the only one who remembers this with Vampire Hunter D and some other movies on TBS during an "anime week"? It was the first time I got to watch so many anime movies and I was hooked! I esp. love this short and Nightmare from Robot Carnival.

  • @Jamberlyn

I did, i did! i was 12 18 years ago when i saw this on TBS with Heavy Metal, American Pop, VHD and Rock and Rule, they ruled my world. I did had earlier anime experience in the 80's as a kid with Warriors of the Wind (the infamous butchered Nausicaa from New World) 25 years ago when i was 4 and Mysterious Cities of Gold at 3 to Voltron, Transformers, Transformers The Movie (saw it in theaters), Unico 1 & 2 and Jack and The Beanstalk on video and Disney Channel.

  • @Jamberlyn Hardly. I watched that stuff every weekend. Was right there along with you.

  • I see...The guy around 2 minutes in looks like Tetsuo.....

  • wow, i like this short anime!!! i saw in 90's is beatifull.....

  • this is my favorite short anime from the movie. It had no words, but yet it spoke to you. I wish I could do that. Lol....

  • The colonel from Akira is at 3:13 I think.

  • @BushidoMH YES! I did! This still lives in my heart forever. :3

It's the reason I started drawing anime at 4 years old, and now draw really good today.

Crazy as it sounds, sometimes when something sad happens the music from this video plays in my head. :)

    Toonami was the bomb.

  • Tetsuo at 2:05.

  • The music reminds me a lot of FF VII. Am I the only one?

  • Ok after reading some of the older coments I have to chime in agin. Yes its true that finding this is quite difficult but its not imposible. I haven't seen it released but I had a vhs copy a gave to a friend in wichenburg az abou 8 years ago. So you can find it but how many copies surive I don't know

  • @oddbasque I have one, but even my VHS is kinda ehh.. :/ That thing's been through alot.. I would watch this all the time.

  • I remeber Saturday anime god it feels like such a long time ago I'm 27 and I was 13 the first time sifi not syfy ran polly matrix I got hooked then over the years I've gone completly the way of the otaku I guess it also was a sign id go that way that I've loved unico as long as I can remeber it was my favouret film as a child and still has a place in my heart.

  • OMG, did you see Tetsuo and Akira at 2:07?

    WTF, why is Tetsuo blond?

  • i remember watching this on cartoon network, night of the robot vampires i think it was. played this, vampire hunter d and tht one animated live action cockroach movie. i love robot carnival so much, its on true piece of art.

  • Anyone else think the blonde guy looks alot like Char from Mobile Suit Gundam?

  • I don't remember this on CN. I do remember it on the Sci-fi channel on Saturday mornings. They used to have a double play of anime. Hehe.

  • this animation has changed my life. it's so fucking eerie.

  • @tuningsplxs14 sci-fi also gave robotech

  • man, that music is SO 80's.

  • @lasthuman1

Good cause i grew up in the 80's and early 90's as a kid and this movie blew me away since i was 12 18 years ago when i saw it on TBS with other adult animated cult classics

  • Mine was syfy channel saturday morning anime along with L.I.L.Y Cat, Project Ako god i miss those days between this locket and the sailor moon star locket I have been obsessed with lockets. funny how little things like that influence you.

  • Mine was syfy channel saturday morning anime along with L.I.L.Y Cat, Project Ako god i miss those days

  • 1:16 - I have something to tell you... What is it? -whispers into ear- I slept with a guy. -shocking smile- OMG! so, is he huge? -points down- Yes! -blushes- -giggles- Come on! I want you to meet him! -runs off-

  • @TekkaSage lmao!

  • Anyone else notice that the music for this is the same as in Oh My Goddess OVA?? But that aside, I loved this! When it use to air, I'd watch it every time. It's great to watch an anime with no words, because the music, and the animation told the story itself.

  • Why Do they like not talk?

  • @darkhunterGPX Sometimes its just easier to tell a story without worrying about words if the artist is good enough, besides its understood in multi langunages without.

  • @darkhunterGPX

    its like FANTASIA of disney.

  • @BushidoMH if ur an 80's kid you saw this on the sci-fi channel with lensmen and the first Vampire Hunter D movie.

  • @TalonusX

I'm an 80's/early 90's kid (81 born) and i grew up with some anime in the 80's like Warriors of the Wind, Unico 1 & 2, Voltron, Transformers, Transformers The Movie (saw that in theaters at 5), Thundercats, Last Unicorn, Noozles, Fairy Tale Theater on Nick etc. and when i was 12 i saw this with Vampire Hunter D, Heavy Metal, Cockroaches Twilight, American Pop and Rock and Rule on TBS at friday nights. You an 80's kid too and you remember those?

  • @TalonusX

Never had cable. I saw all of those on 5th gen VHS tapes about a year after they were released. Lensman and VHD even much sooner, much older. Good times, miss the old days when you had to work for your anime fix.

  • @TalonusX Yep, 80's kid right there. That was the BEST thing I had seen on the Sci-Fi channel! lol

  • @TalonusX yep yep. and if you were a 90's kid then you saw this on cartoon network during the summer, it was called "Saturday Japanime" for 3 saturday nights during the summer, the movies were Robot Carnival, Vampire Hunter D, and Twilight of The Cockroaches. I'll never forget that summer along with another one when sci-fi had a summer block of anime movies...best times.

  • 2:08 akira reference

  • her blinks make stars that turn into robots

  • Robot Carnival Forever!

  • Kinda makes me wonder..she seems to be around the age of 16 and yet..the guy looks to be around 20s >.>

  • Thanks for posting this, this is, and has always been my favorite anime short of all time. I mean it’s so romantic; he goes through all that work just to return the locket because he thinks it’s important to her. Well I think it’s romantic.

  • Love this little gem, i remember watching it on a Malaysian channel back on the good old days. And still to this day, that girl is really screwed up. A good looking knight robot dude saves her and she repays it with punching him silly.

  • this is such a classic! i use to think it was such a wonderful story as a child. it was my fav out of the Robot Carnival shorts =D thnxs for posting this memory of great animes up!!!

  • @BushidoMH Saw this on sci fi in the 90s

  • "Whee! I'm at a theme park! What?! You're cheating on me!? Whaaa! Oh wait. Here's a new boyfriend and this one works at a theme park! Sweet!"

Mwahahahah OMG that's how I would translate this video too! LOL

  • "Whee! I'm at a theme park! What?! You're cheating on me!? Whaaa! Oh wait. Here's a new boyfriend and this one works at a theme park! Sweet!"

Mwahahaha OMG that's how I would definitely translate this video too! LOL

  • thanks so much for uploading this!!! I missed the good shows during the '90's.

  • Worse, her boyfriend is cheating on her with her best friend. Call Jerry.

  • @zivjax rotflmao!

  • That poor girl.

Not only is her boyfriend cheating on her, he's also Char Aznable

  • I remember when this use to air on the Sci Fi also.

  • This is amazing, reminds me of my favorite band t.A.T.u. sort of has the same style.

  • This was one of my favorite shorts from Robot Carnival... there were some very strange shorts but this wasn't one of them ^_^

  • Sadly, Robot Carnival has fallen in Anime obscurity, along with the rest of the old scholl classics that will never see the light of day on dvd...it really is a shame, when you consider that crappy titles such as Harmagedon, and Big Wars made it to dvd , and Robot Carnival hasn't :(

  • Between the story and the music, it's one of my favorites segments from Robot Carnival.

  • I love this anime. Its so hard to find! This is one of the first animes that I have ever seen.

  • I remember enjoying watching this on the Sci Fi channel :)

  • @ladynekochan that true, when the Sci-Fi channel was beginning, it show anime in the morning.

  • The Colonel from Akira is in this too, glaring at New Boyfriend as he cuts through the parade crowd ;)

  • ...but the moral of the story is carnies have bigger plugs. it gets pretty ronchi after that last scene.

  • PORN FOR 3RD GRADE GIRLS

  • who ever put that together was on crack!

  • kool!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The dream sequence was a virtual reality ride affected by the rider's mind, and the guy, who worked for the park, was always in the robot costume. In the suit, his coordination was compromised thus losing his helmet at that one point.

  • Anime characters in Disneyland or a park that's looks like Disneyland.

  • @1mangaguy Definitely. A lot of early anime was inspired by Disney.

  • The music for Robot carnival was all written and composed by Joe Hisaishi. (Famous for his music from Miyazaki movies.)

  • Comment removed

  • I SAW TETSUO AND AKIRA! i didnt realize who they were when i was little.

  • The version of the song at the beginning, "Star Light Angel #3", is missing from the soundtrack.

  • @PoweredButchZ do u have it?

    if so,can u upload it 4 everybody and including us b/c i will love 2 hear it,lolz!

    ;-)

  • I mean it was never released. I want it too.

  • who dude

    so kinda cute ja

i liked it very much man

tha anime of the present its cool but i think old anime is the best

    :P

  • when anime used to be original

  • This is my 2nd favorite short from Robot Carnival, next to "A Tale of Two Robots". It's a really cute story.

  • gosh, she is sooo lucky, i wish this happen to me

  • THIS short right here is what started my love and fascination for anime when i was a kid. Watching this is a huge nostalgia trip. Robot Carnival is a classic.

  • @shroomleaf same here

  • This has to be my favorite one of the lot, the 80s music and imagery is just beautiful.

  • The director behind this short, Hiroyuki Kitazume, also designed the characters from Char's Counterattack, that pretty much explains why the blond guy looked like Char :)

  • I saw Robot Carnival on television when I was around six years old. This short stuck in my head the most, probably because of the music. ^_^

  • nice, with spirit inside T_T.

  • This is Incredible, Amaizing, Lovely! I like it so much! Great story!

  • O.O

  • I won't go into details about this and its nostalgic value, but man.

I'm so glad it's on Youtube.

My dad, because I was like 7 years old, explained the meanings behind whatever happened in this little short. I was a noob, and I still think it's just more about the animation than the story (although that has its part).

Anyways, I love this, thanks for posting it, faved it, and I still can't believe so many people have viewed it.

  • I think so, too... I was reading on wiki and it said it was "directed" by the animators instead of a director, so... ^__^

  • heh caught it. didn't even read the bit about akira in the description. just thought suddenly "hey isn't that akira? it is! cool." :P

  • imagine a girls tears can give some robot a friggin headache.

  • like fuckin...6th or 7th grade i saw this....8-man after, akira, project a-ko....takes me back

  • the parts of this song remind me of the spanish song called "ese hombre" by pimpinela:037-1:38,4:36-5:38 and 7:57-8:08

  • 0:37-1:38

  • i saw this on cartoon network about 14 or 15 years ago and i wa 8 years old, lol.i love the music =)

  • The music is great in this clip.

  • This is really beautiful. Thanx for posting

  • Lynn Minmei @ 3:35 :) yeah I'm bout that old school

  • This really is an incredibly beautiful piece of work. Fantastic!

  • This was about pure imagination and that is something a lot of animation here in America is lacking. A good amount of anime seem to be going that way today.

No talking sponges and no PC settings with bland dialog here; it's better that way..

  • Has no meaning...?

Well, to each his/her own opinion I suppose.

  • What a horrible ride that was. It put the person in mortal danger. Who would design something like this?

  • @TGGeko: Uhh..... Satan?

  • This truly makes anime what it is; Beautiful artwork to capture imaginations forever.

  • Saw robot carnival when I was about ten and thought WTF is this. I feel the same way now.

  • Flying human does not compute! [boom]

  • I feel the same way

  • this particular artist reminds me much of Zeta gundam. Is it the same artist?

  • @Akselleaf he directed episodes of Zeta Gundam, yes

  • I love this cartoon except that 'blonde girl' - she's either a 'tomboy' or she's 'butch' - there's nothing feminine about her.

The 'blonde girl' can easily be passed off as a boy in a blonde wig.

  • I only watched this a few days ago for the first time and I must say out of the whole robot carnial thing, this one was one of my favorite shorts. But I must say that I got confused when she magically went from being on a ride to flying in the sky and then being attacked by a monster thing. But over all the animation and story was amazing. I enjoyed the music greatly.

  • @snaplesugar As she was fleeing from her former biyfriend she found herself on a virtual ride that allowed her to use her imagination. That's how she could fly.

  • @swarlock Oh I see. Thank you for explaining!

  • i love the facial expressions in this, i remember watching this back on the Sci fi channel, and starlight angel being my favorite of robot carnival, everyone remember Saturday anime?

  • I do,but that was before my family and I got sci fi channel on our cable,but...just as we got the channel, they no longer shown SA it,big bummer that was!

At least they got Animonday now,but imo none of the anime they got on there is even worth watching anymore, geez!

Point is,Sci fi really needs to go back to some old school stuff imo and this case anime.

  • YES! Robot Carnival, Venus Wars, A-ko Project, Cashan the Robot Hunter, Gal Force, Demon City Shinjuku, Dominion Tank Police... and they had I think 4 other shows they used to run all the time. I think they called it Saturday Japanime or something. Few things are better than 80's anime

  • I have Dominion tank police on dvd, i loved that anime so much. Demon city shinjuku was the first anime when i re-discovered anime ( i use to watch thundercats when i was 3 years old, essentially that was really old school anime) i saw demon city on MTV at 11pm at night and i just fell in love with anime all over again.

  • Venus Wars was my drug from Sci Fi channel, and Robotech was my first fix.

  • Robot Carnival, Vampire Hunter D, and Demon CityShinjuku were my beverages of choice, Project A-Ko: Civil Wars was my crack, and Dominion Tank Police was WIN!

  • lol wut

  • I remember videotaping animes off of it so i didn't have to go to the video store to rent it all the time...I have so animes because of SciFi's Saturday Anime and I blame them for my tastes in anime today!

  • It would have been hilarious if the guy at the end had cheated on the blond girl in the past and she gets pissed off seeing him and runs out on her friend with the brown hair and the story continues.

  • shojo indeed.

interpretation aside, this is just enjoyable to watch as a piece of dream theatre, without any waking notions of 'meaning'.

i wonder what rides tetsuo and akira went on... maybe the robot ride gave him the idea for his arm!

  • cute

  • Anyone know how much of this is specifically modeled after stuff at Disneyland/Disneyworld? I haven't been in about 20 years (the last time was I went to Disneyworld was in the early 90s), but some of this stuff in this segment really looks familiar.

This isn't the best Robot Carnival segment, but it's still fun. 80s anime is the best.

  • This was my gateway anime! All hail old school!!

  • I wish Disneyland had an awesome ride like that!! ^__^

  • 3:10, Take That, Pepsi!

  • @geekgo4 Japan is a big seller of Coke so it makes sense.

  • I think it has a bit more of a meaning than that... Boyfriend cheats on her, so she goes off with robots, who are lots better, and the one turns out to be human after all, restoring her faith in mankind. Woot.

  • I have the same experience with this movie as a few people: it's one of the first anime I ever saw and I saw it on TV in the middle of the night when I was a little kid. Sci-fi used to play this and 8-man all the time.

It's crazy that Tetsuo and Akira are walking around, does anybody else think the little boy walking with Tetsuo is supposed to be Akira?

  • Bwaaaaa Anyone else recognize the guy at 3:13? I can't say I'm surprised that Tetsuo and Akira are in there somewhere. lol Where at?

  • Tetsuo and Akira appear walking towards the camera on the right side of the screen at 2:05. They are holding hands and Tetsuo is recognizable by his white shirt and red cape.

At 3:13 that's the Colonel, Colonel Shikishima.

  • I remember I was a freshman in college when I first saw this movie. And this is such a silly wonderful piece of fluff X3

  • @ 2:07 is that tetsuo and akira on the bottom right?

  • Yep, they be the two.

I think you see the bald general from Akria in this movie to.

  • Man I have not seen this since 1993 on channel 69 (before lame ass upn bought them up.) man I would stay up like 3:00 am to see this. Man those was the good old days when t.v. was... wait for it... Real? Now I feel old as fuck. By the way keep post these gems.

  • The first time I ever seen this was around 3am on TBS back in the day. I watched the whole thing and didn't see it again until I found an old copy of it in a blockbuster in 2000. About ten years. I hope they put an anniversary DVD out sometime soon.

  • why does this reminds me of Final Fanasty?

  • yeah that beginning music sounds alot like the intro to the earlier FF titles . and does some of the characterization kind of remind you of CLAMP?

  • Perhaps because the tune in the beginning of this film sounds almost identical to the opening theme in the original Final Fantasy games.

  • if it weren't for those sci fi channel saturday morning animes i never would've even be into anime probably. Project A-ko 1 & blue vs. grey, demon city shinjuku, casshern robot hunter, eightman after, robot carnival and of course vampire hunter D.

  • this movie is the reason I'm into anime in the first place it just sucks that there is no US dvd release i would buy it in a heart beat

  • Yeah, remember when TV was good.

  • it was one night on cartoon network that got me addicted to anime, they showed robot carnival, vampire hunter D and twilight of the cockroaches one night, and i been hooked ever since, i was probably around 12 back then.. and here i am at 26 still loving these movies, and alot more... but then a few years later i did start watching the Sci-fi channel saturday morning anime too tho and i got too see all these over again before i could buy em on DVD, which i know have :D

  • 0:00-0:11 Final Fantasy anyone?

  • Oh, how I loved witnessing the glory of the Robot Carnival shorts... Starlight Angel is one of my favorites, including Deprive, and Cloud. I have these recorded on VHS somewhere.

Oh, and I also remember recording Project A-ko Grey vs Blue and Eight Man After. Anyone else watch those on the Sci-Fi channel way back then?

  • Naw. Back in the mid 80's to mid 90's my older brother would go to comic book stores or various conventions & buy the bootleg copies because these anime were available to the US audience yet.

  • This movie is the best anime movie ever made hands down

  • omfg I just watched Urotsukidoji because someone said it was from the same director wtf I can't believe the main animator did this and the other scary shit. Some twisted shit these japanese animators are

  • Hoooooooo snappp!!! I never thought I'd ever see this again!!! Brings back so many memories. (^w^)
