  • I'm from Norway and I "wanted" to live in Miami.....until i realised I have to learn Spanish.

  • i like the lady in the video, she made alot of points. but the sad thing is why would these mexicans or whatever country they are from, learn english i mean almost everywhere i go and things i read are all in spanish translation. its getting ridiculous so why would they need to learn our language when they are getting catered to.

  • Oh come on ppl, lets settle down and try to reach a compromise.

Both should learn japanese, ta-daaa. Easy as that...

  • What do the chickens have to do with anything? Lol, that lady's on something... Jajaja XD

  • 5:36 Because of bitches like this, is that we have stereotypes, xenophobia and irrational hatred in the world.

  • If Mexicans keep their language then they will keep their culture. As a non-Hispanic, I don't want to see this. I say this because Mexican culture promotes corruption and poverty. If you think this is not true, then go to Mexico to see for yourself. And people are leaving Mexico for this country for opportunities which do not exist in Mexico. So we non-Hispanics should make every effort to separate Mexicans living in this nation from their language.

  • Being spanish speaking is not considered a handicap, not being able to learn english. But being deaf is a handicap as there are not as much programs for the deaf as there are for the spanish speaking. I think sign language should be learned over any language as when I was deaf in the 1960's, I as not allowed to learn sign language as educators wanted the deaf to talk than sign.

  • me parece que son bastante racistas los estadounidenses.....

  • omg...this is sooo wrong. In the U.S.A. all classes should be taught in English. Other languages should only be an elective!!

  • English is the language of black people, the language of Obama, the language of jamaicans and south africans, the language of nigerians and bahamians!!

Mexicas, learn English!!! Its a very useful language.

  • How can there even be a debate? Go to any discussion boards, and you will see plenty of Hispanic trolls that tell Americans that learning Spanish matters more than learning any other foreign language. These motherfuckers are TOOLS.

  • Sorry, I think Mandarin will surpass Spanish. Do you see the Chinese trying to learn Spanish? Do you see any of the arabs or Asian power houses learning Spanish? NO! English in America is a belief I'm willing to die for.

  • Hummmm, no wonder California is broke as hell. No habla english no money.

  • america has room for only one language and that is the english language.

  • I am aware... But Hispanic is an umbrella term for many people of many cultures and races. You can say Miami has a Hispanic and Latino community. Because there are many peoples from many countries and cultures from Latin America and the Caribbean... TX, CA and the Southwest's "Hispanic" population is like 99 % Mexican Americans or Mexican immigrants. There's no diversity... No flavor , it's just one choice, one major ethnic group . No need to use Hispanic. Just Mexicans.

  • @00mrmonster Also, like 90% of people of Mexican descent here is Texas are 2nd to 4th generation.

Most Mexican-american youth here is San Antonio,TX don't even speak spanish, my nieces and nephews don't speak a lick of it.

Also there are many other "hispanics"( hate using the term) that are here in Texas.

  • CA and TX have no HISPANICS,they have MEXICANS.

Hispanics means more than just one group of people... Not the case in those states.

  • @00mrmonster what iks the damn difference ?

  • @rcmixed Lots bro. Lots.

  • @00mrmonster the term hispanic takes in count all mexican people, well most of it, while latin takes in count hispanics plus others like french, italian and portuguese.

  • @00mrmonster what is the difference?

  • To: @00mrmonster

    Sept.10, 2011

You are wrong. Hispanic is an ethnic term forned by the U,S. Census and refers to persons born in Spain or also born to Spanish descendents who spoke or speak the Spanish language.

Also, not all Hispanics in Texas are of Mexican descent and I know several Cubans who live in Texas.

  • @immicontfla Spanish speakers yes.

I am from Miami, and whatever 3 or 4 Cubans or other "hispanics" you might know does not diversity mean.

CA, TX and the whole SW of the US and sadly, most of the US is Mexican. And as Latinos we are judge by their doings. SAdly.

  • @00mrmonster They are not hispanics, they are natives.

    "Illegals" are mostly natives.

  • @immicontfla So sorry, but why there's a few ignorants who insist that Hispanic means the people who were born in 'hispania'??? Hispanic - in terms established by Real Academy of Spanish Language - means the people who speak Spanish..... And yes.... Not all Mexican descendants are hispanics - because perhaps they cannot speak Spanish. I agree that.

  • @immicontfla So you're saying that a guy from Barcelona (a mediterranean guy) and a guy from Quito (Equator) are both hispanic ?

  • @00mrmonster stupid ignorant. With hispanic you mean those people that were conquered by spanish "conquistadores".

if you don't agree find out in a vocabolary. calling spanish speakers hispanic, is the same reason why you call the name of their language spanish and not mexican, argentinian etc etc.

and is the same reason why "americans" speak (american) english and not just american...

  • @logiko89 Whatever man, I don't even know what you are talking about.

  • @00mrmonster Hispanics are from Hispania (Spain)

  • @1coolguysuper Yes, Hispanic includes Spaniards , who are white , and the term also includes Dominicans who are black and Guatemalans,Mexicans and Colombians -Who can be black, white , but are mostly Mestizo and Amerindian.

  • First of all let me start by saying that I am from Puerto Rico. Neither I agree or disagree with any of the opinions given here. I think it's everybody's choice to learn to speak other languages. But, in my opinion I don't see why you refuse such knowledge. The more you know, the better for you(in all aspects). I speak Spanish, English and some French and Italian. But that's just me, because I chose to. Keep one thing in mind, knowledge is everything. If you don't want to learn, that's fine by m

  • VERY GOOD IDEA, ENGLISH THE LANGUAGE OF THE USA. SPANISH PROBABLY HE MOST BEAUTIFUL AND PERFECT LENAGUAGE ( LIKE PORTUGUESE, OUR SISTER LANGUAGE.).

  • this is senseless! if you go to the usa, then you MUST learn they language they use! (im not from the usa, but what im saying is common sense -_-) come on people! if you want to live in another country, GET USED TO THER LANGUAGE!

  • To: mrluis It is an insult for you calling me an ugly American" just because I choose not to learn Spanish. It is my choice and not up to you as the language police to demand I learn Spasnish.

English is the language of commerce, science and medicine and the Spanish

language is not. Providing Spanish and bilingual Spanish programs only provides a crutch for Spanish speakers not to learn English. This is why 30 percent of the Spanish speakers in Miami can not learn English.

  • @immicontfla A vast majority of US-born Hispanics are fluent in English.

    There goes your entire argument.

(Regarding bilingual education: most language acquisition theorists agree that this is a good thing. It objectively works: there are lots of English-speakers who go through French education in Canada, for example, coming out as fluent bilinguals. What's the problem if the same is implemented for Hispanic Americans with English?)

  • Comment removed

  • @immicontfla You're right... But I think there's communities if the most of people think that Spanish must be the first language for principles... I guess they would invest on a School, but paid by the community... Not for the state, nor the Federal Government....

  • People coming to live in my country, the USA should learn English, the language our Constitution is written in and stop trying to force us to learn Spanish when we do not desire to learn Spanish against our will. if we choose not to learn Spanish that is our privilage and do not need to be told we must lean the language of the invaders who stael their way into Miami coming on boats and planes as unwanted illegal aliens we need to stop by the millions who have

    devastated Miami forever.

  • @immicontfla Thats what most people fail to understand....Why Spanish speaking people are the only race in this country are given a pass....Spanish people are being favored over every race around the globe. I never saw a Asian,Africans or French people forcing anyone to speak there native tongue...Its a choice...but we as Americans are force to speak a language that came from Spain. Every Frenchmen,Arabian,Hebrew speaking Americans don't do this kind of self centered attitude..its disrespect

  • @immicontfla ahahaha whom you call invaders???? ohhh let me tell you. you stole this land from the true Americans, Aborigin people.

  • People coming to live in my country, the USA should learn English, the language our Constitution is written in and stop trying to force us to learn Spanish when we do not

  • @immicontfla Yes, they should learn English. That does *not* mean, however, that Spanish should be relegated to be a second-class language, only to be used in the home and not in education or the workplace. If that happens, it'll disappear from the US.

What I'm saying is: a fluent bilingual Hispanic population is better than a fully monolingual one, in either direction.

  • @SaimDI That would be a good thing, because in Mexico everyone there only speak Spanish

  • @SaimDI

Don't try to imply that the US was some kind of multinational, multiracial conception from the get-go. It was not like that. It was intended to be an Anglophone country. And that's how it should remain.

  • Learning a 2nd (or 3rd or 4th) language at an early stage is an excellent idea for 2 reasons: (1) A child's ability lo learn myriad languages exceeds that of the adult who must overcome the interference of his/her native language. (2) The more exposure to different languages & culture the better in today's shrinking world. This would certainly eliminate the image of the "Ugly American" of yesteryear. We in the U.S. should learn from the Europeans who generally speak several languages.

  • They have a good idea here

  • "Shouldn't it be a choice, why is it mandatory?" It is a choice. I am honestly bewildered as to where Kaufman's vitriolic hatred toward her childhood tongue is coming from.

  • Kaufman's obviously never heard of the Pennsylvania Germans or Cajun French of Louisiana. There have been plenty of counties and cities with non-Anglophone majorities in the US.

  • @SaimDI Those people all stay in their area. They are talking about a large waves of illegal immigrants that have taken over all of the Southwest and most of the Northeast like in New York where I'm from. Most Dominicans and Puerto Ricans can speak English. So why are there signs in Lowves and Home Depot in Spanish? The Canjuns and the Pennsylvania Germans are a small minority of people living in the United States. They don't move in large numbers and most of them can speak English.

  • @Celticboi69 Excuse me, but I think I know what she said. Kauffman said "there are entire cities with different cultures now". That was *always* the case in America. She's evoking nostalgia for an old, purely WASP America that *never existed*.

"Most of them can speak English" should be amended to "mostly monolingual in English due to linguistic oppression". The same is true for US-born Hispanics, as most of them are monolingual English speakers.

  • I don't really give a fuck !! English or Spanish I'am fluent in both, therefore I'm better than you......."CRACKA"

  • "VIVA LA ARMADA ESPANOLA"!!!!!! CRACKA"!!!

  • I'm hispanic and I believe it's wrong for our public schools to be teaching in Spanish ( with the exception of Spanish class, obviously ). I learned Spanish at home and English at school.

The official language of the US, should remain English , so we must learn it.

  • @IDSNTeam It's easy to learn both at school, and this way cross-generational fluency will be maintained. Plenty of people go to foreign-language immersion schools and emerge with a fluent knowledge of two languages. It's quite easy to speak both languages if you're exposed to both from a young age. Spanish class doesn't teach the language nearly as much as Spanish-medium instruction.

  • English is the national language. Learn it or get the fuck out.

  • Spanish is a rich and expressive language, lexical researches, and scientific researches in general, have proved that learning a new language not only expands your expression and eloquence but also your creativity and intelligence in common and unusual situations. Sorry if I made a mistake, english is my second language.

El español es un idioma rico y expresivo, investigaciones científicas han demostrado que aprender otro idioma es benéfico para la inteligencia en general. ¡Viva el Español!

  • There will be chickens in the streets!

    ¡Habrá pollos en las calles!

  • MONOLINGUALISM CAN BE CURED!

YES TO FOREIGN LANGUAGES YES TO CULTURE

  • its more ezyer if you learn spanish thanif thay were to learn eng

  • u cant change it! lool

    spanish will rule

  • You see, they want you to conform to them, not the ones already here...mhmmmmm

Change to their way now, they say!!

  • English is the international language that contributes to the United States before Spanish. All legal residents, citizens have to be capable of speaking English in order to understand what people of other races are talking about. Spanish is an option for anyone who is interested in linguistics or being bilingual in the United States, but making it a requirement will be stupid and ridiculous.

  • todo el mundo deberia aprender espanol y los que no lo hablan deberian ser expulsados. speak spanish or leave the fucking country

  • @MrHispanicpride

    so hard you hein..?

  • @MrHispanicpride lol serious? pienso que las personas de este pais deben ser bilingües, pero no es justo decir que todos deben aprender Español. I think learning another language is awesome, and I am a firm supporter of that, but to say the English speaking majority should HAVE to learn English, is stupid, straight up. In a perfect world, everyone would speak several languages, but gone are the days of multilingual people who are multi lingual for the sake of being multilingual.

    tomalo suave

  • @vicarious8989 did you mean english speaking spanish cus you said english twice

  • @netuber12 yeah lol typo

  • @vicarious8989 what? try with another dictionary

  • @MrHispanicpride this is why nadie queren tontos como tu. la mentalidad es mierda. naw espanol es una langua importante pero, decir aprende o vaya del pais es dumb shit.

  • In Europe they have programs in which they give grants to Americans and Canadians to be ENGLISH teaching assistants in BILINGUAL public schools. In Latin America, learning English is MANDATORY in the public schools. I, as a 3rd generation Mexican-American wish that my parents had spoken more Spanish to me, but they stopped speaking it to me when i was 4. I am proof that our mother tongue gets lost by the 3rd generation Why must we as Americans be so closed minded?

  • English speaking ppl also need to work. The job market in some places are designed for English speaking ppl (non bilingual) to fail, as they are not fluent in Spanish and have no resources to help them to be fluent. So what do they do?

  • If English speaking ppl here were offered intensive Spanish classes in the US, more ppl would speak the language!! Ppl here who are not of Latino descent do not have the resources to learn the language fluently. Spanish is fun to learn, but I am against it being a requirement for a job, it should be a PLUS!!!!

  • It would not hurt to learn Spanish, as educationally this country is behind compared to other countries. Other countries do learn foreign languages or English for that matter. The problem is that the schools in the US do not ENFORCE Spanish. They have Spanish as an option, and if you do take the class, it is not intensive. The Spanish classes here are very basic and are NOT designed to make the ppl FLUENT!!!

  • I know how to speak spanish a little, in fact I am a native chavacano speaker, a spanish- based creole. I want to earn spanish more because it is a beautiful language. Whites are just overacting, they are just threaten that latinos will take over someday. remember there is a latina in white house now. Let those latinos speak spanish, they just don't want to affiliate their culture to the whites. Latinos have a unique culture ok

  • @albinonatividad Well spanish is a multi-etnic language. For example spaniards are all whites and loves too the spanish language. It's not a etnic problem.

  • @ProyectoHispanosfera Thanks for that one. The whites that I meant were the white americans who see the spanish language as a hindrance to progress, i dont know why they keep on telling the latinos to stop speaking spanish once they are in the US. Isn't it nice to learn many languages. Here in the Phil we are multilinguistic, Filipino, English, Spanish plus the many dialects we speak and look we excel.

  • English is the national language in America, so every citizen, in order to assimilate into this nation, should speak it fluently. Speaking other languages is fine and acceptable among friends and family, but not knowing the English language at all is unacceptable.

  • That's really cool. I wish I would have been taught more formal Spanish writing and reading skills. It's kind of sad when all of the US-born Latinos can speak Spanish but have no clue on how to properly read and write it.

  • The lady has no manners, he keeps interrupting the other guy.

  • pinche vieja pendeja! ke grosera es, se la pasa interrumpiendolo, quien la enseno a debatar? Pinche puta que se de un balazo mejor, nos haria un favor a todos

  • We all should be speaking Esperanto.

  • que chever que enseñen alos niños esa hermosa aLENGUA

  • I live in Miami and chickens walking the street can be found in any state in certain areas thats not an issue. Now if she wants to say we Hispanics are easily the most reckless ,worse drivers she has ever seen than I concur. Dont believe me come to Miami where turn signals are not used by MOST and speeding driving in and out of lanes with police looking the other way is the norm

  • latinas are semlly and slutty. they can't speak enlgish cause they don't wanna. i make fun of my hot sis all da time. i bread at her and tell all my friends she is a slut. she has sex with all my friends. she cries at night. i think she hates me. she refuses to speak enlgosh even though she was born in boston. how do i make her speak english???

When she starts turning tricks she will learn some English.

  • that womens a bitch i wish she would stop talking

  • for real, your either American or your not. There aren't any sub cultures of America.

  • That's simply not true. America is a wide and diverse land, even within the anglophonic sphere! There are many different subcultures; A West Virginia coal miner is going to have a very different way of life than a yuppie in Chicago, even though they are both Americans and speak the same language.

  • Yes. Borders, language, & culture. This is America, love it or leave it. We are a soverign nation with borders. English is our language. And the whole reason immigrants come here is to take part in the culture that made America great. There are no "hyphenated" Americans. There is no 'hispanic-American'. Either you're American or you're not. Get over yourself.

  • im sorry, America is a continent.

  • Once you illegally cross the border from Central or South America you're in the United States of America. Break that law and you can expect to face consequences, the least of which is deportation. We are a sovereign nation. Try to get this important point.

  • only central or south America?

  • I guess you just don't get it. By the way, have you seen the many ICE raids lately? There's more to come. Borders, Language, and Culture!

  • My family came here to the east coast of the US, from England, in 1620 - nearly 400 years ago. The oldest missions in California date back to the same period, no earlier. My family's now been in California for 108 years, and those hispanics who were here are recent immigrants, not 'native'. If you have a problem with the fate of the indigenous people of California, take it up with YOUR ancestors, the Spanish.

  • don´t have comparison between vikings and the colonization of America by spanish Empire. Vikings only runes, Spanish language, culture, architecture, literature, Laws, cities, Franciscan missions...

  • Spain discovered America, spanish language is an american language since 1492 Anno Domini.

  • I think English is firt and Spanish second. Look at Europeans they must speak even more then three languages at sometime of their lives. You who think {only English} you do not like learning and you complain about it. Now lets make Spanish official then now that you give me that idea. If not then quit thinking about it.

  • Spain discovered America, spanish language is an american language since 1492 Anno Domini.

  • I'm sorry. There are 1000-year-old Viking runes on the rocks in southwestern Colorado that PROVE northern Europeans were here LONG before the Spanish!

  • viva el español!

  • Who gives a flying fuck who spoke what first. This is not a History lesson here. The US has been established since then as a English speaking country.Any immigrant that comes here should learn English. It's a matter of respect for the people who live here.I don't go to another country to live an not expect to learn their language. Only Border jumping scumbags try to convert another countries language to suit their personal needs.

  • Spanish was spoken in the Americas a lot earlier than English. The anglos arrived much later...

  • This is just another ridiculous racist claim ("anglos") by illegals who'll say anything to justify their invasion into OUR country! BORDERS, LANGUAGE & CULTURE is the bottom line.

  • alguein podria subtitularlo please

  • 1000-year-old Viking runes on the rocks in southwestern Colorado that prove northern Europeans were here LONG before the Spanish! Regardless, this is America, not Mexico. BORDERS, LANGUAGE, & CULTURE. That's the "glue" that makes America what it is. Don't even try to change that.

  • some rocks don´t prove anything. Spanish colonization is proved. Don´t change the history my friend. Colorado, Nevada, Florida,California, New Mexico, San Francisco or Los Angeles are spanish names. Sorry Again :)

  • Vikings are tribal My respect for the nordic people, Spanish Europeans are also blond people of celtic or visigothic ascent, but,

Spanish Empire was a world empire since XV century (Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Americas...)

  • The real Americans are the indigenous people of that continent, the rest, English,Spanish or whatever, are the usurpers and invaders of their territories. The African Americans were brought to The Americas and Caribbean Islands by force into bondage and slavery, so they deserve to be part of that land as much as the native Americans.

Don't talk to me about culture and language, which culture, which language?

  • Culture? what culture? The U.S. is a mixture of cultures. that´s what makes it great.

  • The first european language that was spoken in usa was the spanish. every people in this country has to speak in both languages, is better for you

  • you are an idiot!

  • No. The first languages of the United States were American Indian languages. But the language of the United States is English, all other generations of immigrants (German, Italian, Slavic) have learned English, Latinos are welcome to come to this country, but they should assimilate and learn English.

  • @AresAstur they should but i dont think they have to.

  • @AresAstur Eso depende de la forma de pensar de cada quien, los Americanos son libres de querer o no aprender otro idioma.

  • @AresAstur

Wrong. Leif Ericson, first known European to land on the U.S continent, and he spoke Norse. The country of America was founded by English speaking Europeans. Native Americans did not speak anything close to Spanish. Learn your history, instead of trying to re write it to accommodate lazy people who refuse to learn the American Language, English.

  • @grendel1013 Wrong. Leif Ericson, first known European to land in Terranova, not in continental US. The country of United States of America was founded by English speaking Europeans, that's right. Then USA received large waves of immigrants from non-anglophone european countries (France, germany, italy, poland, russia..)who helped raise the white population in the USA. And later on those european-usamericans spread to the west and stole large portions of land to Mexico...

  • where spanish was spoken centuries before english (that's why most southwestern states/cities have spanish names). Native Americans did not speak anything close to English either. Learn your history, Learn the history of your OWN country before giving lessons to others, cockroach

  • @Khaagon

So what? Mexico lost their land wither through force or through purchase. Either way, that is history. This is now. Stop crying that you lost your land, Mexico will never get it back. And I hate to say it, that is no excuse anyway for why Illegals should be allowed here, and why it is ok to not learn the English language. That whole " we were here first" bull shit does not fly with me. And is a asinine to even use that in an argument, it holds no water.

  • @AresAstur

Ok, I want to learn German instead. German is a better language anyway. If Latinos want me to learn Spanish, they should learn English as well.

  • @AresAstur

i would rather learn Chinese, or Indian, since our country conducts business through trade, etc.

Spanish, why should I learn Spanish to accommodate people who come here Illegally, and pop out anchor babies? Why should I accommodate people who do not take their own advice when they say " Americans should be bilingual". And above all else why should I accommodate lazy Latinos that refuse to assimilate?

  • @AresAstur

No it wasn't, it was English.

There was no "USA" when the Spanish arrived.

The USA was founded by English-speaking peoples.

  • @Reazzurro90 He means "the territory that now forms the USA". Don't be so pedantic. And yes, French, Dutch, Spanish and German were all spoken in what is now the US before the American Revolution. It was a result of centuries of linguicidal policy that saw the disappearance or near-disappearance of these speech communities.

  • @SaimDI

    Wrong.

First, it is an important distinction, that between the 'territory that now comprises the US' and 'the USA.' It is relevant. English-speaking peoples founded the USA, and therefore have the right to preserve their culture.

Second, Spanish was not a major language in the US before the American Revolution. Florida wasn't even one of the original colonies. The others weren't 'major languages' either, they were languages spoken by immigrant communities. And on a very small level.

  • @Yuri92001

It was a lapse. Big deal. But my intention was clear.

English was the dominant language of the thirteen colonies, by far. No other language came even close.

  • I don't really see why that has any bearing on "ergo everyone should speak only English" in this comments section. I know you aren't necessarily making that argument ....but in all practicality some places simpy remain bilingual (such as in the SouthWest). The fact that the 13 original colonies spoke English as a dominant languge really did little to effect the continuing existence of the languages of the colonies who had been there more than a century before the English settlers arrived.

  • Spanish has survived from other (later added) colonies as the second most dominant language. I don't see the practial problem with a bilingual culture. You don't NEED English to be an official language, as in the government pretty much already is and wil stay that way. Beyond the use of English in an official capacity, using another language for buisness and social affairs does no real harm (as you must learn Engish in anycase in order to be successful in the public/governmental sector.

  • @Reazzurro90 It is an important distinction. Yes, he made a mistake. But when you consider what he *meant*, he is actually correct. Dutch New Englanders and New Mexico Hispanics were around before the Anglos, so they're hardly "immigrants". And French and German speakers have had uninterrupted transmission of their languages since before the American Revolution! Like it or not, all these linguistic groups are "native" to the United States.

  • LOL i love the chicken comment hahahaha...

  • Me too. LMFAO at having chickens on the streets, corn-on-a-stick push cart vendors, and candy stores in living rooms in American towns in So. California. Welcome to Mexifornia.

  • You must admit that America is built with more languages, cultures and identities than the only W.A.S.P. (White and Anglo Saxon)

  • What a moron. Most immigrants in the last century were WASP's. Many did speak languages other than english, but ALL came here to become AMERICANS, not bring their 3rd-world broken home-culture here.

  • Spanish language isn´t a third world culture, Spain is a western european nation with a long long history since the Roman Empire and times ago.

  • If you Respect all people , american, european, overseas, you will be respected. Go Obama!

  • @telkines the constitutions in english.......-_- that should speak for itself

  • you don't want to speak english? Then please go the fuck home. You know I lived in other countries and i had to learn thier language in order to survive. Since when did they have the right to come here and try to change our laws and our way of life? Try NEVER. When I lived in Mexico they forced me to say their pledge of allegience and I was forced to sing thier national anthem. Thank G-d I live in America as I will never ever live there again. Please just go home and get your own economy please.
