Remember that Monsoon was a former pro wrestler himself. JR is quite good in the right circumstances. Monsoon and Heenan were real life good friends, that made their own screen chemistry that much better. They were like a two man comedy act during the matches. To JR's credit, he had to endure the way a color commentators role has changed over the years.

By the way,Gordon Solie is the holy grail of announcers. Heenan is the best manager of all time. Now no one stands out, they all suck equally

Jr was good only when he started losing his mind with such comments like: "My god stop the damn match!" or "He's broken in half!" other than that JR wasn't very good at playing the straight man with a color in my opinion, but Jerry Lawler was semi-decent as a heel color and pervert.
