Owning a stock is owning a piece of a corporation. Corporations are required by law to increase their profits every year to make money for you, the stockholder. This makes it necessary for them to find ways of turning more profit every year no matter how much they pollute, brainwash people into buying their product more, cut corners on quality, have "planned obsolescence" so that the products break and you have to buy more, to outsource more jobs to 3rd world nations...cont.

You forgot two very important aspects of stocks. In buying a company's stock, the buyer is expressing faith in the success and the company, AND, entitles him to receive a share of the company's profit. This is called a dividend. Stock trading doesn't exist for its own sake.

Not a bad equity 101 starter... but one small detail... You can invest in a privately held company... it's just harder to do than a publicly traded company. Private companies almost always have shares as well as public ones, but usually held by various principals of the company. You just need to convince the owner of said shares to sell you some or all of them, and it likely won't be a small $500 purchase.
