  • just saved a lot of money by doing this myself. had fun with a friend and did something useful that day. youre awesome

  • u r very helpful i am rebuilding my d16z6 and when i was pulling it out and my inner joint well the cup fell off and i had no idea they had two seperate greases thnk for tht and also this is my first car engine rebuild so im learning as i go im pretty good and most mechanical stuf but alot of ur videos have helped me alot and i could use some help from someone like u to finish up the job id really like to hear my car run again really soon i miss it il deff post a video and pics of it asap

  • Thank you very much for doing this. You have saved me from taking my car down to a shop a paying for something I could do on my own. Your videos are very clear and understanding. Keep doing what you do. I appreciate it. Looking forward to watching more of your videos. Awesome!!!!!!!

  • impressive video and clarity, and good humor thanks

  • Awesome video!, I'm gona watch your other videos too now

  • I just learned that the inner cv boot is torn on both sides of my 2007 Avalon. Im broke as hell and wanted to know how long before i have to get it fixed, in your opinion.

  • I have a Fiat Uno (Crap) the inner joint is lubed by the gearbox so if the boot goes the gearbox runs empty. In South Africa they don't sell complete axles. Still living in the past.

  • Mine clicks when I go strait only when it is cold out.

  • both my boots are ripped and i dont know if i should replace the boots or wait til the axle gets messed up, im pretty broke -_____________-

  • @7dramabeats My cv boot is clicking and I'm broke too. Sucks! -.-'

  • "hi, im richard branson.."

    "hi, im eric.."

gotta love how these two people planned this (Y) :P

  • i agree, i would replace the whole axle. i repaired some boots because i was unable to find replacement axles from the store and my only opinion was to get them from the dealer and they were expensive. so i replace the boot. its way cheaper but its more work to disassemble the axle knuckle

  • GR8 GUY !!!!!

  • I know it's lame but I've used a heavy duty plastic zip tie, instead of a metal band, to hold the boot on. To add insult to injury, I used a split boot (that used tiny bolts and nuts to hold it together - not glue) so I didn't have to remove the axle. 100,000 miles later, they're still running fine.

  • Use grease to GET IT ON! @ 15:12 XD

  • Hey Eric, i was wondering if you have any knowledge with the pontiac fieros? if so, do you know anything about the common manual trans problems?

  • I didn't know that you could clean the "santorum" off of the shaft with mineral spirits.

  • Everytime you said "get your mind outta the gutter" i was knee deep in it. LOL love your shows

  • "get you mind out of the gutter" that alone was worth a subscribe! And very informative too!

  • If your cleaning with it more than 5 minutes your playing with it

  • Its different from car to car.

  • yup, we just switched the axle not the boot. way to much work.

  • whats the difference grease????

  • Tile nippers work great on the first style of clamp.

  • HE SAID SHAFT!!! HAHAHAHAHA

  • my shaft is at a slight angle, but i cant get it on!

    j/k man your videos rock

  • wow, first really good instruction for amateur like me (and 90% of YT viewers od DIY movies) - step by step, everything explained and described well. thanks.

  • @califool85, if that humming sound is coming from the wheel area. Then it's most likely a front hub bearing going bad. If its intermittent, then you may have time. If its constant then it needs immediate attention.

  • If my car shakes while running and makes clunking noises while turning what could it be, it also shakes at lower speeds and when brake is applied, what could it be, great vids man

  • Very informative, great video!!! One question can u please elaborate on what you first said that if its clicking on turns no rush to replace but if its clicking while going straight replace?? My 2000 forester definitely clicks while making right hand turns, and it makes a noise while going straight, i would not call it a click though, more like a revolution hum... Started a week ago and i have to drive it 300-350 miles to get it to a shop.... Do u think ill be alright??? Im just looking for aby

  • i glad this came up recomened for me and i click on the video i was gonna do a cv boot

but my joint is clicking axle time!!!

  • I was told I had a torn boot on my 2003 s-10 pickup. What is that and where is located on my pickup?

  • Excellent tutorial. I comment to add....I always replace my CV boots, and have never replaced either of the axles on my 1991 VW GTI (I'm the original owner). Reason being is, remanufactured (what are called "new") axles don't last as long, nor do they have the correct tolerances of an original, from the factory cv joint. Last time my mechanic replaced all the boots, he stated that my axles were like new, even after 245,000 miles.

  • If your boots opened up wouldnt that mean you should just get new cv joints instead of replacing the boot?

  • Hello Eric,

I liked your videos my friend your are doing an excellent job. Very smart the explanation about how to save time and money just by changing the axle. I think I would do the same. I have an Envoy that has the boot ripped open but is not too bad, there is no noise yet and I think that I would wait a little before I change the whole axle. Thanks for the videos

  • excellent excellent excellent

  • Hello Eric .. nice job on the boot replacement ... and i my self would do the same and replace the whole axles ......

  • It must be quite irritating when you go to all this effort and time to make a clip that may help or give good advice only to be shot down in flames by some envious know it all dumbnut.

Most so called experts seem to be from the UK...a nation of diyers who spend good money on destroying a building....keep up the good work..thank god for youtube

  • So, out of curiosity, how dead do you think the axles are if they cause a monstrous wobble in the entire front end when you're going over 40mph and accelerate? This happened to me a long time ago but I replaced both axles already but I'm just wondering how bad off that would've made them. Thanks and I love the videos! :D

  • good video. a few of your videos helped me fix up my car.. thanks. i got a laugh to with the if you clean it for more than 5 minutes ... haha

  • VERY interesting tutorial ! Thanks for what You're doing for us :)

  • If I was to replace the boot, I found some boots at the autopart store wich are split open and come with glue. Supposedly you don't have to do all the taking apart and getting dirty. All you do is put them around the shaft, glued them and done. I believe those boots are trash, what are your thoughts?

  • I just use zip ties on the cv boots if i cant find any clamps

  • I did this to my 1989 GTI this summer from your video! Im 17 and it took me a couple hours. I learned so much in this experience and the GTI is still rolling :) awesome video feels good to learn something new!

  • @MidnightClubGamR I love comments like this. I'm glad my video was able to help you, thanks for the comment.

  • @EricTheCarGuy Hey, I replaced my CV joints and now my car is making a squeaking noise when you driving and it only happens when the car is hot. I've checked everything and there is nothing that isn't tight and nothing seems to have any rubbing or wear marks on it. Any ideas what could be making such a noise? Thanks

  • Hey Erik,

Excellent video, very informational and easy to follow.

Is it the same procedure for 02 Passat. I tried to do this on my drivers side axle, cv boot replacement, but it didn't work as well. I managed to get all the bearings our and wasn't able to put it back together, which meant a new axle anyway.

Thanks for the video again man,

  • @haveri5 Honestly I don't know as I'm not familiar with that model however you might ask over at the ETCG forum on my website as there may be someone there that's done this on that model.

  • Anyone else catch the bullitt sound effects in the intro?

  • I wish your shop was near Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Good video. Thank you.

  • @computermech Yea me too, you guys have health care I can afford.

  • i liked your style dud ,exelent show!!

  • @machineme1 Thank you.

  • I feel your pain. Next time I am thinking of buying a stretch boot, I have had problems with rebuilt axles only lasting 50,000 miles or less.

What is your opinion on this tool/product?

    Dorman Products #326-614-035

    CV BOOT / AIR TOOL

  • @ivanbgct If you just want to replace the boot replace the boot, don't use split boots as they don't work out well in my experience.

  • @EricTheCarGuy

Wow Eric thank you very much for the quick reply.

I was actually trying to describe the stretchy boots that are one piece. I tried posting a link but you tube will not allow. Search for "stretch cv boot" on you tube and you will see exactly what I am trying to describe.

Its like replacing the factory boot with out removing the axle for the gear box. The boots cost almost twice as much and the tool is a little over a hundred dollars.

    Hope all is going well,

    Ivan

  • @ivanbgct I've seen those but considering the cost I don't know how practical it would be for just one use.

  • hi. forget my first post. Heres my question... is the boot (nearest to wheel) supposed to spin with the wheel? (96 honda accord) It does on my car. Husband is a roofer and we are outside putting roofing rubber with roofing rubber glue on the boot to stop all that grease from slobbering out. thanks soooo much for your help and reality.

  • @LifelongCamper Yea that's what actually drives the wheel. Honestly just drive it till you hear it click and replace the axle, they really aren't that expensive or hard to replace, you might actually make a bigger mess with that glue.

  • Comment removed

  • "if youre cleaning [the shaft] for more than 5 minutes, youre playing with it." so many puns in this one! thanks eric. owning an integra, i have run into many problems that your videos show me how to do. You have saved me lots of money. thanks!

  • @TheLaserSharks Helping people with auto repair is what I do, thanks for your comment.

  • hd zip ties and tip tie tightener tool. cv boots and bellows boots i've never had a problem yet

  • @Bryanx89 Those can work on some applications however on most there is a clearance issue and that will rip the zip tie right off and possibly damage an ABS sensor in the process. Thanks for the comment.

  • eric, i have a 97 cavalier, and i noticed that the cv boot is torn, and it has been torn for at least 2 years, and 10000 miles,i did hear clicking at one point and i took it to a guy thinking it was the cv joint, but it ended up being the driver side hub,and i have not had anyother clicking since then.

Should i just wait till it starts clicking before i replace it? if not what should i do?

  • @trainergames I actually think I covered that in the video but I'm an advocate of replacing the axle rather than doing a CV boot service.

  • @EricTheCarGuy Sorry, but what i was meaning is,should i go ahead and replace the axle, cause the boot is torn, even though it is not clicking at all? Or should i just wait till it starts clicking and replace it then?

  • hey eric i have a question i have a 99 dodge intrepid and every time that hit the break i hear a big clip and when i have the on park i turn the wheels i hear some clip too so do you think it's the cv axle or something else by the way thanks for your great videos they are really help full

  • @superoach Not sure really, you might want to watch the video that I did on finding suspension noises as I go through the process of how to find a noise like that. Good luck.

  • Hello there, my VW Touran has broken Boots recently, so they are leaking some greese. I done only 75,000 miles on my Touran. I know the CV joins are not very protected now, but can they last untill the end life of my car? I mean can they last untill my car reaches like 300,000 miles or so... When do the CV joints start clicking?

  • @VidsYouMustSee When dirt and moisture enters the joint it will wear it out and it will begin to start 'clicking', I'm honestly not sure how long that will take.

  • Good information. I think I will leave my broken Boots like this. I will replace the whole axle later on.

  • @VidsYouMustSee I've done it like that a time or 2 myself. Thanks for the comment.

  • "Nothing more Dangerous than a Dull knife" ... haha epic dude...!

  • @leisryan It's true. Thanks for the comment.

  • One axle on a Porsche 944 Turbo is around 5-700 bucks, so think I rather rebuild it :P

  • @Lillie1986 Good plan.

  • Great video Eric. But when you said Honda is notorious for Boots ripping, i had to shake my head and laugh. Honda + Rubber (heater hoses for me)= bad news.

  • @1991HondaPreludeSI The newer models use a plastic boot that seems to last a lot longer. Thanks for the comment. BTW if you had a head gasket issue at one time it turns the coolant very acidic and will pretty much eat all the hoses from the inside.

  • Hey Eric, do you have any videos on noisy lifters.

  • @bcompany6 Not at the moment but I've been asked about lifter noise a lot lately.

  • THANK YOU!

  • @MrUnibaker Your welcome.

  • This is not something I do either, but it is a good video all the same. Thanks for your videos. It is much easier to learn from someone when they are down to earth rather than, you know, like everybody else. -Wil

  • @Wilforknowledge Well I'm too fat to fly so I'll stay on the earth. Thanks for the comment.

  • "Quit it!" hahaha

  • What actually causes the clicking when a CV joint starts to go bad?

  • @crazycory25 Too much clearance between the bearings and the joint.

  • I recently hydroplaned my 2006 Mazda3 into a ditch and hit a bunch of trees. Had to replace front left shock and spring assembly, and a couple other suspension parts on the left front and rear, as well as the left side tires and wheels. Now the steering is very heavy and wont move unless I move it (even if I turn the wheel all the way to the left or right). There is also a noise like metal rubbing, but only when I turn it to the left from center position. Does anybody know what might be wrong?

  • @sicjustinmagot By the sound of it your PS rack is probably damaged, you might want to do a good inspection of it and it's parts.

  • Yeah replace axle to much work to go through. I know I sell this crap most of the time people just replace the axle.

  • this guy is great

  • Hey ETCG, About a week ago I was driving on the highway and all of the sudden i heard a loud noise in the front right wheel well that sounded like a rock had gotten kicked up by the tire. Upon further inspection, I noticed green grease sprayed all over my wheel well.. After inspecting the boot (looking for a tear) I saw what appears to be a hole in the outer CV axle boot. What I think happened is that one of the bearings came out and shot out of the boot, creating the hole. Is this possible?

  • @bwat42694 I've never seen that, it's more likely that the 2 events were not connected and you just happened to find the problem when you looked under the car. If a bearing came out the axle would not be able to move the car as it would break right out of the joint and make a heck of a racket whenever you tried to drive anywhere.

  • hey, Eric, I have an 03 Malibu. i hear a clunk from an itial start. more so on cold comared to being warm. the wheel bearings seem tight and brakes seem fine. its like a few clunks, more so on a mild turn compared to a straight start. any ideas?

  • @Romulan112 You might want to watch the video I did on checking for suspension noises as I go over a few things to check in that video that might help you find the problem.

  • Hey eric, I am trying to replace my passenger side axle seal and fix this sound near the passenger side axle.. Its hard to describe but it sounds pretty loud. Sort of like a high pitch chirping when I'm driving. Doesn't happen at a particular angle, just in general. So I guess i'll replace the axle too. Should I replace the joints too? Have a limited budget

  • @christianbaclao If your on a limited budget I would recommend finding out what is causing the noise before you start buying parts you may not need. Perhaps you could benefit from watching the video I posted on Finding Suspension Noises 101.

  • will changing the boot stop the clicking? ... and what causes the axle to click?

    thanks

  • @horzempaj08 No, if it's clicking you either have to replace the axle or the outer CV joint, personally I would recommend replacing the axle as I think it would be more expensive to replace just the joint these days.

  • Hi Eric, I'm trying to done the outer CV boot myself. Should I take the whole axle off? Or I can just do it with the axle on the car? Thanks before. by the way, it's a 98 mitsubishi magna.

  • @LAPDtra It's much easier to take the axle out and work on it outside the vehicle.

  • by axle do you mean driveshaft its jus here in the uk we have different termonologys styll i fid your videos very insightfull and when you used to work on these did you ever use a cv boot cone? they are extremely usefull and in most caes you dont need to remoe the axle shaft from the gearbox :) or the joint from the shaft we still do them messy job but not so bad :)

  • @basslinenut Yes you can interchange 'axle' for 'driveshaft', in fact driveshaft may be a more accurate description. If your talking about 'split boots' honestly I don't like them at all at least the ones here in the states aren't very good and don't hold up too well. Thanks for your comment.

  • @EricTheCarGuy n rpoblem i keep up with your facebook also good to see a fellow mechanic spreading the knowledge had a nasty joberlier rear axle bushes on a ford fiesta not nice at all did a bit of sweationg but still prevailed in the end and thanx for your reply il be sure to watch ur up and coming videoes and all the best with the new shop :)

  • by axle do you mean driveshaft its jus here in the uk we have different termonologys styll i fid your videos very insightfull and when you used to work on these did you ever use a cv boot cone? they are extremely usefull and in most caes you dont need to remoe the axle shaft from the gearbox :)

  • I searched and found this video to get an overview on how these come apart to replace the boot and it helped me. Thank you! I'd be looking at a new axle but I know that mine just broke open today and it's noise-free. Also I don't hear good things about the non-OEM replacement axle products for my car. They all seem to fail due to stress pretty quickly, not to normal problems like degraded boots.

  • @codithsaves I'm glad the video helped, if you are willing to put in the time then replacing the boots is a perfectly good repair and should work just fine for you. Good luck and thanks for the comment.

  • Great vid, What was the other joint called? on the other end, not the cv joint. And are the boots on both sides the same model? or are they completely different types of boots? I have a open cv boot on the rotor side. its wide open from the bottom and can see all the dirt and grease in it. 1991 integra by the way. Thanks

  • @christianbaclao They are both CV joints actually. As for your axle yes they are different but you might wait and replace the entire axle as it may be less money in the end.

  • lol, real funny and informative! good job, took me back to my apprenticeship days.

I've forwarded this to all my mates, real entertaining, worth the 20 mins! good job & thanks!

  • Dang, the day I asked that question, it started clicking. Is there a brand of axle you like?

  • @rpedersonkc I can't think of one sorry. I would avoid buying ones in a plain white box without a country of origin printed on them.

  • what is a CV ??

  • @thawhiteballa Constant Velocity or Continuous Velocity joint.

  • Hi Eric, Great advice again as usual. I am in a dilemma.... 2006 TL with about 75K on it. The boot is leaking and I totally know that it would be easier to replace the whole CV. However, the dilemma is that that I've read the new ones (not oem) are not near as well built as the OEMs nor do they have the dampener so the can vibrate. So... drive til it clicks, replace boots, or just get a parts store replacement? Thanks again

  • @rpedersonkc On that one I would replace boots as I agree the OE axles are much better than the rebuilds.

  • thanks eric very helpful

  • Eric if my axles are clicking on both sides only when turning can I get away without replacing them for a while?

  • @rick9220 I think so, if they start clicking when your not turning the wheel it's defiantly time to replace them.

  • What about a car that's been lowered with coil-overs, and you have a bit of a camber so the boot rips and gets some dirt in it, but there's no clicking yet in the joints. Wouldn't it make sense to replace just the boot? My joints are pretty new and I just haven't been able to get camber kits and align it properly so the boots rip more often than they should. So far I've just replaced the whole joint, but in this situation I feel like If I have some time to kill anyway, it may make sense.

  • @desaad37 That's up to you, I just made that suggestion based on the amount of work it takes to do boots, it's a lot less effort to just replace the axle in my opinion but replacing the boots works just as well if it's not clicking.

  • Comment removed

  • thank you ! very helpfull .

  • @leogabyflorida Your welcome, thanks for the comment.

  • PS!!! you saved me 70 bucks on a mazda 626 2.0 for axel replacement

  • Awesome! i just looked up how to do it on you tube and you where there... it was agreat help for me!!!! i replaced a lower control arm and a CV boot. but i tryied to replace the cv axel and it had a axel seal/pivit point that took a break to change so i just replaced the boot, the axel was good no clicking b4. so all good! wathing your videos helped a great deal!!!!

    thanks!!!!!!!!

  • @820Johnnyv I'm happy to help, I love getting comments like this, thanks.

  • @austinman1995 That's up to you as you know your capabilities and skills better than me, I just make videos of how I do things to give you some idea of what you are in for.

  • Hey Eric, how much would it cost to replace the axel and boot on a 2003 s-10 pickup with labor? just a ball park figure. Thanks

  • @Jmsadv I don't do pricing of any kind sorry.

  • .."- over bumps, it needs to basically.. do all this.. stuff."

Sweet. not too formal ;) Very good videos eric.

  • THANK YOU for this vid. I need to replace a ripped boot of mine. Normally, I'd replace the axle.....but it's a on my Subaru Forester Turbo, and the axles are over $400/each, and aftermarkets aren't much cheaper. My axles are perfect, it's just a boot tear from an off-road trip. Again, thanks for the video, subscribed for sure.

  • @bluefox4848 Yea in that situation replacing the boot is the way to go. Glad the video helped and saved you some money. Thanks for the comment.

  • good video man. this was very helpful. nice info, nice filming.

    thanks!

  • @chasefeasr69 Glad you liked it, thanks for the comment.

  • question: could you please tell about the quick boot for replacement, what do you think? are ok to do it? I like to keep my car in good condition and this looks very complicated if you do not have the right tools please let me know, thank you

  • @leogabyflorida Don't bother, just let it go till the axle goes bad and replace the entire axle, my opinion is the split boots are a waste of time. BTW auto repair is all about the tools you have without the right tool it's a waste of time in many cases. Many tools can be borrowed or rented and you might want to look into them before you start a job like this.

  • Hey Eric, nice vid. Love the shaft inuendo "gigity". Coupla weeks ago i did an outer boots with out taking out the axle nut. I just hold the middle of shaft "gigity" with a giant vice grip, and hits the 90 degree point of where the vice grip n shaft meet wth a hammer towards the slidier inner boot, then free the outer joint snap ring. Exchange out the boots, c-clamps n whatsoever, line up the axle splines, fiddle with c-clamps wid screw driver like u did. Can u do a vid like that please

  • @tsiontadesse1 That actually sounds like too much work to me personally and given that I've already done 2 videos on this I don't see myself doing another one anytime soon as there is so much I want to cover yet but thanks for your suggestion and comment.

  • gracias!!!

  • @paconet74 De Nada!

  • Great stuff thank you, doing mine this weekend it now holds no fears cheers

  • @autoclus Fear is the mind killer. Good luck with the work and thanks for the comment.

  • awesome man! Uve got a dirty mind my friend.

  • Def glad to see this video. If ive gotta do all that work for my CV boot, to hell with it. Swap in and out, all said and done......less grease mess too.

  • @joe735 That is exactly my point. Thanks for the comment.

  • Thanks so much for this video - it really has "de-mystified" things for me.

I'm replacing an outer boot because I can't afford the replacement shaft right now and here in the UK, a split boot is a test failure!

Once again, thanks - I shall definitely be subscribing to your channel.

  • @necscirefasestomnia Good luck with the boot replacement and thanks for the sub.

  • lets all go to your website n start clicking da ads

  • @mrg00ddude You are awesome!

  • That special tool for the clamps when installing the boot look like tile nippers.

All in all, it looks like replacing the cv axle is far far easier than this boot business.

  • @waddyprocess It is much easier and more practical in most cases in my opinion. They do look like tile nippers but they have a little boss that comes down to help seat the clamp which makes them a little different. Thanks for the comment.

  • i'm like you on the its faster/easier, cost just about the same to replace a axle then it is to replace a boot.

I've recently went thru a strand of HORRIBLE axles, GSP thru advanceautoparts. The axle just vibrates up the butt. Not sure why but I just rebooted the old one and called it a day. No issues with the old one rebooted, $40 to reboot, $75 new axle. I want to say these part store axles are not as well made as OEM stuff.

Where do you normally pick up your axles at?

  • @smashturtle I've never had a problem with the axles I've gotten from my parts store but if your remans are vibrating I would suspect it's a problem with the inner joint as they are responsible for most of the vibration issues with axles.

  • Dude... You are a great teacher!! keep up the good work.. thanks for sharing..

  • @jrivasag Thank you very much for your comment I really appreciate it.

  • Hey eric, i have a friend with a 2005 subaru outback, his CV boot is hanging out of the joint...i lifted the car up and it was grease everywhere around the boot and joint, should i replace this for right away? if yes then i should replace the whole axle right?

    thanks in advance!

  • @tonymon15 Depends, you can let it go till it starts clicking which may be some time from now. Personally instead of replacing boots I often replace the entire axle unless it's cheeper to replace the boots. Find out how much the axle and boots are and take it from there.

  • Hi. Make a Powersteering tie rod rack replacing video :)

  • @dreadiel I shot it last week and will post it soon I hope, I'm waiting to hear back on several other videos that I've already shot that may get posted first though.

  • thank you from Egypt

  • @ah77ed Hello Egypt! Thanks for the comment.

  • Very good. :D

  • Hi Eric,

My C.V boots are real torn but joints are still good because I haven't heard any clicking so far. I could just replace the boots without having to worry about the joints but an inspection is the best way of telling that and also are you serious about the circlip not having to be replaced? I thought you always had to replace but if you're saying that than I will go by that lol

    Cheers, Martin.

  • @kw3zee My statements about replacing axles is based on the fact that axle prices for some vehicles have come down so much that it's just easier to wait till the joint fails and replace the axle rather than just the boots. If the axles for your vehicle are expensive then by all means replace the boots but if they are cheep and close to the cost of the boot kits then you might consider waiting and replacing the entire unit.

  • i am actually due to replace my cv boot in my 97 jeep grand cherokee 4x4. front left has torn open and since i go to the desert for fun very frequently i need to change it to prevent dirt and sand from entering. thank you for posting this video eric. i have been looking for something exactley like this forever!
