  • Gadzooks! Break out the fire extinguisher!

  • Was they betty davis vocal ??

  • @mrborges73 Yes, they sang backup for Betty Davis for sure on her debut album, though I'm not sure about the other albums. You can hear them the best individually on the song "Game is my Middle Name"

  • Thanks so much for posting these. They were great days. And they were so talented. I think I wore out my 'Live at SF Opera House' album....

  • I love them./ but I don't like the kazoos.

  • These sisters can literally sing ANYTHING...jazz, blues, soul, country, pop...doesn't matter!!!

  • i don't know if i should order another drink or shout out a hallelujah, these ladies ROCK.... they took it to the brink during a REHEARSAL,, such wonderful talent and this song makes me want to dance and praise the lord at the same time and I don't mean that in a blasphemous way either... we are at such a LOSS without June and this original group... i LOVED their 80's work, as it was my time period but i am SOOOO happy finding these jazz sessions with the entire group. WOW WOW WOW WOW...

    I joint see the video.

    thanks you.

  • dang,,,and this is just a rehersal......

  • call me old-fashioned, as I know there are alot of female singers out today that are really popular and such, but for my money, these ladies can't be touched in terms of voices, stage presence, style, and sexiness..I saw them a number of times here in the Bay Area and they always brought the house down..Talented like nobody's business, and damn fine to look at too. A deadly combination..

  • having fun

  • fuh-unky

  • When they all come together on the chorus you can almost see the doors exploding off the juke joint!

  • PRESIOUS!!!!

  • I love this video, Wnag Dang Doodle was the first Pointer Sisters song I ever hear, and still my favorite, except maybe How Long (Betch got a chick on the side).

    Thanks

  • Brilliant! Does anyone know if any videos are available of the Pointers when they were a quartet - or even a collection of these shows?

    Ronn,

    PS. I love it !

  • Man,they make you want to get up and dance!

  • These most talented gals, were my absolute favorite "girl group" of the 70's ... (actually i don't thnk the 70's was an era for 'girl group's ?? -- but these are some of my FAVORITE performers of that era. if I want my adrenalin to pump, the Pointer Sisters will do it EVERY time! Thank you much.

  • This is good....the Howlin' Wolf version is definitive.

  • They are doing there thang!

  • bonnie was funky! wonder why she left the group at its peak.

  • Wang dang that is funny.

  • ALRIGHT !! THX!!

  • Holy Jesus this is incredible. The kazoo-saxophones are a riot. SING LADIES!

  • awesome!

  • Fricking AWESOME!!! Anybody know if this is the Hoodoo Rhythm Devils backing? Some self-appointed "Dean Of American music critics" named Christau gives this a B-. What a wanker, the Pointers were so great. There's a clip of them from '71 on Wolfgang's Vault doing "You Got Me Humming" which is pretty hot, too.

  • Where can I find "You Got Me Humming"

Is it just as hot as this clip ?

  • originally performed by Cold Blood...I know the audio is on a k-tel comp....

  • freebird 1969? I'm wondering about your comment Cold Blood originally performing this song. I had the understanding this was KoKo Taylor's song and she is the one that made it famous way way back in the day.

  • your thoughts are right. It was written by willie dixon and recorded 1st by howlin wolf 5 yrs prior to koko's version in 1965 which went to #4 and was a million seller.

  • Mongo76. Thanks for the info.

  • I stand corrected..You've Got Me Humming was originally a Sam and Dave tune, written by Isaac Hayes and David Porter in 1967, covered by Cold Blood in 1969.

  • Jesus. Gotta love the Pointers. I mean, love the Koko Taylor version but this is something else, superb...

  • Find a friend take'm to the polls. Get out and vote, Then lets nominate the Pointer Sisters to be the opening act for the OBAMA-BIDEN INAUGURAL CELEBRATION!

    bkeitel

  • From left to right:

    Ruth - Anita - Bonnie - June

    Ruth has the low voice

Anita has her hair up with a flower

Bonnie has the long fall wig on

June has the afro with the feathery dress sleeves

  • to gloryboundkev.

Sweetie you better stick to JSS&M.Carey, and leave the real stuff alone!

Don't worry about tongues which you can't speak or comprehend.

  • i hear what you say. maybe it's better that way. thought i'd pass this way and have a laugh today. ( =

  • @gloryboundkev

They call that "scat." Like Ella Fitzgerald was famous for doing.

  • OK so its Ruth Anita Bonnie and June on the far left , Right? Still listening to this on a daily basis pure genius !!

  • I ment June far right , Right ? doh

  • You mixed up Bonnie and Anita. Anita's next to Ruth.

  • Thanks for the reply now I'm going to sound thick but their left to right or ours only I thought Ruth was the tall one ?? Thanks again x

  • Yes Ruth is the tall one ;)

  • My wife grew up listening to early pointer sisters records and had always told me how good they are or were . Now I'm totally addicted to listening to them , I want to make every one I know sit down and listen and watch these early recordings PURE GENIUS !! Can any one tell me which one is which as they line up above please ? These girls were 2nd to non absolute dream to watch !! Thank you x

  • From left to right Ruth,Bonnie,Anita,& June.

  • written and produced by the great Allan Toussaint, who also produced Labelle's great hit lady-marmalade

  • Wow, does this bring back memories! My brother engineered the first two albums, so I got to spend a lot of time with them - rehearsals, sessions, and that first tour. I sure miss'em!!

  • talented to the gills........

  • cats would say, play like it's your last gig

  • There should be a movie made about their lives.

  • That is a great idea...got any ideas who could play them? I think Ruth would be the hardest one to cast. Can't think of anyone who could ,atch her voice, unless a nonsinging actress plays the part (or Ruth plays herself!) But Whitney Houston could play June

  • That is a hard casting to pull off period. I think that visually I could see ... Whitney in the latter part of the movie, because they would have to show them go from young to old. I could see Fantasia, India Arie, Vivian Green, maybe Kelly Rowland (maybe), Erykah Badu, going out for the parts of the sisters because they have their body frame.Vocally you would need Angie Stone, Jill Scott, and some other Neo Soul singer that can hit the notes to perfection.

  • I do agree if the movie is their life story, you would need to start with some younger actresses, but for the adult times I also kind of thought Mary J Blige might work (Bonnie?) or even Latoya London from American Idol (as Anita).

  • I have no idea who could play Ruth. You would have to find a female who could sing incredibly low, and who could sing deep at the same time lol She would definitely be the hardest sister to cast, just because alot of female singers can't hit the low notes she can.

  • Hot. Brings me back.

  • Superb. This was the Pointer Sisters at their peak -- before they allowed themselves to get all blanded-out. And look what happened then.

  • ouuu yeaaaah :)

  • When you sing this hard just rehearsing, you love music.

  • these girls love to sing, they would go to church on you in a NY minute.. To me, their early stuff was the best stuff. So much versitility. After Bonnie left it was all mediocre from there......The just had raw talent, and it's hard to duplicate sister harmony......God Bless 'em

  • One the most versatile vocal groups ever! Jazz. blues, country, R&B, country, rock and pop. I love their early stuff.

  • If you like your music funky n' fresh, then look no further. The Pointers' are in the building!

  • Not a fan of their earlier style, but it was interesting to see this.

  • These early Pointer Sisters videos are really fabulous! They were so damn good. I loved it when they had that funky '40s look too. Great stuff.

  • Just an added comment. I saw them on my 16th b'day in '72. June still had braces on her teeth. Best concert ever. Talk about a rockin' 16. Press coverage the next day was the best ever. Locals loved them and they loved us back.

  • Thank you. Thank you. I requested this when I saw the Can Can video on YouTube. Thanks goodness somebody recorded this!

  • They wear this old blues standard out something fierce here!

  • Wow! Love it! Never heared this one before, but I loooooove it!:-)

  • Oh I get it... they're Pentecostals! I Love ya girls!!

  • sorry sisters but i missed your concert in '73 in Rotterdam ...I went to Frank Zappa earlier that afternoon at the same venue.

in those days we had too many choices ay : )

at least you're still around (or at least I hope so ; unlike ol'd Franky)

  • Dayum, that was awesome. I love the old pointer sisters!!!!

  • Hi everybody, thanks for your comments, it,s great to know so many people love the sisters like I do.

Bonnie was the one who left first to sing solo.

  • I believe this period was their first incarnation when they were doing standards. Check out their first albu, I blieve it was their first, they wore clothes similar to these. Notice there are four sisters, one would later leave-I believe it was Ruth although I am not sure.

  • the started our as a throw back to the 40s with a nod to the Andrew Sisters; they were ALL the rage during this period to those music lovers in the know. next up would be LaBelle. this was my fave period from them and I in fact lost interest when they went pop. excellent.

  • Fairytale please Anita

  • Please Anita Fairytal as you done it in Carolina in the spirit of the country Y'all

  • the Handkerchiefs need no explainin' see how they move on stage, try it

  • fantabulous!!!!

you're right universuale, todays songs are sooo lame. but i must say, the pointer sisters did some boring commercial stuff later on as well. whats up with the handkerchiefs, is that a tribute to the late great Ella F.?

  • The handkerchiefs are there to wipe of sweat and give a feel of church on a sunday, hahaha, no seriously, it just was part of them on stage I guess, I never asked them.

  • @universuale, Maybe there's no connection, but in Africa (and from there, the Caribbean, USA, & South America), & in the Middle East & Europe, many dancers carry handkerchiefs. For example, from Google "The Lundu is a dance-song with its origins in the African Bantu tribe [It] became Brazil's first national dance... Usually Lundu is related to the Spanish fandango and other new-world dances ...they all involve, to some degree, handkerchiefs, castanets, and holding ones' arms above their heads.

  • Ruth, Anita, Bonnie and June

  • Thanks everyone for your comments, glad to know there are still real music lovers outthere.

It breaks my heart to read that June died broke, wow that really hurt me badly!

Why don't I like todays female vocalists, because they're all plastic and sing alike, they yodle like swiss alp dwellers, all of them, so boring really!

  • @universuale Most of the most noted celebrities died penniless and alone, especially in those days. Just look at what happened to Florence Ballard....

  • compared to destiny's child.....they are so much better to think how rich Beyonce is and June (so much more talented) died broke

  • MAN AND THAT WAS JUST REHEARSAL??

  • Only sisters can do that! Amazing!

  • I L-o-v-e em!!!! ;-)

  • Also June (bless her soul) made an attempt with a solo album of which I forgot the title.

It was a funky, rocky, experiment with some popular covers and a disco track if I remember well.

I'll try and find it again in my old record collection. Come to think of it I'd love to hear it right now.

    Pointer Sisters forever!!!

  • Baby June

  • AMAZING!

  • Ruth Bonnie Anita and June...in that order in the lineup..Bonnie went solo later with "Heaven must have sent you"

  • they really are my favorite ,great voices ,charisma sense of humor i wish they were still around i love em x

  • They like a hip version of the Andrew sisters.

  • What recent artist can hold a candle to these ladies? Rhiana? Ciara? Snort.

  • Isn't it wonderfull. Lister to the operahouse concert. Even better!

  • i love them how fantastic are they x

  • I love it! thanks for posting. they are the best

  • amazing... thanks for posting this stuff!
