Hey I just picked up an Optiplex GX1 but it has a password login required from the previous owner do you know how I can bypass this or reset it so I can get access?
BeOS aka Palm Operating System was the fastest, most reliable system at one time. I could run 5 mp3 players / 5 divx players at the same time on a PII 233 64 megs ram, 1.4gig hdd while Windows 98 / OS 9.1 couldn't even do 1/4 that. Multithreading, Multitasking, and the real first 64bit commercial OS out there.
Yes you can run the BeOS on newer hardware, but it won't recognize the printers and some video drivers. It was good to play with, but couldn't do any actual work with it. Ubuntu Linux which came on my Dell Inspiron netbook loads so fast and runs great, and you can be productive with it.
About 23 seconds from when the bios turned over control to the boot sector, that is fast. BEos blows windows and linux out of the water, it's just a shame it didn't get the support it needed in the beginning.
at least get a decent single core lol there very very cheap like 15 dollar for a decent 3.4 ghz intel pentuin 4 ht if ur on a budget then get it overcloack will b enough for 4 ghz or a bit higher if u dont know how to bad i guess well do it in safe mode system memeory and dont just overclock it at least put it vol correctlly 2
@john8520 More like looking for the IDE drives, if you go into Dell's BIOS turn off AUTO to skip a drive you know is not connected, it speeds it up a lot!! The RAM checking on Compaqs is much slower then on a Dell, it counts each MB in a second's time! On screen helpfully however.
I have one that shared a similar case to the GX110s, but it's more similar to the Dell GXa model, that one used a large tower and PCI/ISA riser along the bottom
I used BeOS back in 1998. It was the most amazing OS I'd ever seen. I still remember very clearly running several instances of the teapot and playing music and rendering a 3D composite image AND playing a movie, all at the SAME time without a single glitch. Too bad the company had to close. I loved BeOS back then and I did not know you could run it on more recent hardware such as your system. Might try that soon.
Ah, i'm working with a dell Optiplex GX1 in my spare time that i'm borrowing (hopefully Mr. M will decide to give me) That has 64mb RAM and is running...Windows 95? 95 on a PIII? get that thing 2000 or 98!
...Anyway, i'm borrowing one and hope to own one someday.
BeOS could multitask multimedia video, several videos at a time onscreen on a normal machine without a single glitch back in 1996 ! it was the best operating system I've ever seen!
LOL the BIOS took longer to load than the BeOS! by the way you are very luck to have a BeOS compatible computer. I used to have an IBM aptiva which could run it on 32 bit colo thanks to its NVIDIA card... it was perfect except for the fact that the keyboard didn't work. I currently use Leopard and I still find BeOS better than Vista or OS X, if only it had survived...

Holy crap. I haven't used this since I had Win98SE on an IBM PC 300PL. It booted slowly and wasn't compatible. But I still like it.

@tsm32383 If you change the setting in the CMOS to not skip compatibility tests, it will be slow, otherwiseit is very fast.

Try Haiku, because it's BeOS reborn! (But better) ;)

AMD's Magny Cours with 12 Cores, 32 GB of RAM, 250 GB SSD Disk and BeOS. That would be a great Desktop.
Came on Haiku.

It's not crappy, it's just really really old. It's not my main machine, either.
Back in 1998 you would have died to own this machine. ;)

@john8520 yeah that's back in 1998. It's 2010 buddy. Most people only keep their machines for 3 to 4 years tops. =P
