  • Mark the elf :D

  • @cockroach2 yep, it can be just that bad.

  • Ander, is it just me or do dwarves come off as a race that can hate/distrust almost everyone? Also with the fear of water, I don't know if you read the Dragonlance books, but Flint was terrified of water because of him getting flipped over in a boat because Caramon is just too big. And they practically threatened him to get on a boat. I think that fear added depth to Flint as a character, and no matter your race or class, I think everyone should have a fear.

  • @XBurntBProductionsX Fear is a great trait for a character, gives the player something to sell. Yes, I did read some of the dragonlance books. I'm sure you can guess which character is my favorite of them, it is the same one I received on a which character are you test once.

  • I've seen some people do that. There is this one guy in my group who plays a gnome, it is just terrible. I usually even forget that he's a gnome, wow, how bad is that? Great vid again. The main man, hehehe, I like that.

  • @QuinnSilver yeah, the more you play the more bad playing you're likely to see. RPGs aren't the easiest hobbies & they tend to attract a lot of people who really don't seem to want to role-play. & that's Your Main Man!

  • @woodwwad Yeah, I think you are right on that. It is kind of odd to me, that's the whole reason I want to play but it seems a lot of people don't have that approach.

  • @QuinnSilver I think it has to do with the social aspect of the game, being around people. I'm really a little lost on how some of these people can value their time so lowly to engage in some of the terrible games I've seen.

  • Great article as always.

  • @YaoiHuntressEarth thank you very much.

  • Great Video. A friend made a game with Orcs and Goblins and really developed his own mythology and racism and even political dynamic to the races including variants of human and the others. It made it really easy to develop a mindset for my character and for others who played that game. I'm so glad someone is talking about this on youtube and getting this point out there.

  • @Xinixie Thank you very much, I too think it is important, especially for new players as most of the time PHBs don't give anywhere near enough info for them to convincingly play a race described there. That sounds like a really neat game. I'm a big fan of Orcs. Where the characters you guys played brutal & evil or did he go a different way?

  • @woodwwad The Orcs were based on proud warriors who came very harsh mountainous region. Very much concerned with honour and valour and extremely proud. I didn't actually play one, but my Goblin travelled with one of them. The Goblins were interesting too though. There was a whole back story of how they'd once been tall and brutal slave traders, cast out and hunted down by humans, reduced to a roguish existence for survival & so the journey for her was a redeeming one. Man, I miss that game now.

  • @Xinixie yeah, it sounds cool. How long did it run? What class did you play?

  • Excellent video as always, Ander. I think it's well within the abilities of most role-players to play another race as alien as it should be to humans. However, most role-players are just damn lazy and conform to stereotypes.

  • @clackclickbang I think you've hit on a big part of the problem there in a direct fashion. I've been carefully trying to get across a lot of monsterousness & Oni like behavor with The Golden Dream Thorn in your game, while also trying to get the alignment over & personal quest over. I think Brady's been doing a great job with the racial change he's had put upon him, he's rolled with it excellently took, I've been very impressed.

  • @woodwwad Agreed. Brady has adapted the voice and the motives of his character since the reincarnation. It's interesting to see how differently Marglod acts acround his family compared to other races.

  • @clackclickbang Well, my family are not inferior to me, as other races clearly are. They also intimidate me a bit now, as I know their souls are dark & hungry & truly I might not be strong enough to stand against my family.

  • @Blandhumanoid thanks brother

  • I am less critical of my players then I am myself when it comes to their playing of demi human races. In some cases its easier to say the elf grew up as part of a merchant family that set up shop in a human populated town. That could explain the combination of human and elf tendencis.

Now I totally play my demi humans to the best of my ability so thqat players at least have an example of what the race should be like or at least the "local" elves" are like. Great topic as always.

  • @masterofflowers Well, I'm big on the idea of being highly self critical on all things, it keeps us honest & makes it easier for us to grow or get better. & of course you cannot expect your players to portray non-humans well without showing them how they are played, so great point there.

  • I do like when people role-play out the culture and racial traits of whatever they are playing. That being said, this doesn't seem to be as much of a pet peeve of mine as it is for other people. I guess I just appreciate when it happens. Swearing in fake swear words can be very interesting. I prefer the word "Flarg" that is much like a certain versatile real world swear word starting with the same letter. :)

  • @Samwise7RPG I like "Groth" meaning "trash" I have my northern barbarians refer to everyone who doesn't stand up to their scrutiny as Groth. Making up words is fun.

  • @masterofflowers Groth. :)

  • @masterofflowers Yes it is & it adds a nice texture to the game.

  • @Samwise7RPG I'm all about the details, I love them they are in a word what brings me to the table. Flarg is nice.

  • I love the reference in the beginning.

  • @AgeOfTheMasses Thanks, glad you enjoyed that. It amused me.

  • Gnomes are always played too fluffy for me. I like characters with a little edge, and with a gnome you just cant take him seriously. Shit, in Pathfinder they're purple! However, I do like the crooked halflings. They're so small and innocent looking, they resemble children. So when one of them really has a black, gritty side, it's all the more freakish. I like the Avenger pic in complete Adventurer, that's one halfling I would fuck with.

  • @TabletopTitan Hell yeah you'd fuck that halfling. I have loads of problems taking gnomes seriously. Yeah, great job by pathfinder there, they made silly ass gnomes purple, good job, right? Nah son, that's the ballz!

  • 10:40 or so plus draves have stomachs OF IRON!

  • @doombybbr Yes, they do.

  • @doombybbr and BALLS OF STEEL

  • Yes. Can't post the url for some reason. Video nhmUj9QJ9RM

  • @rabbit95823 right on, youtube doesn't let those be posted, to cut down on spam, I guess.

  • Boba Fett! :) "Tom et ses chums! Farador D&D" on YouTube [part 1 and 2]

  • @rabbit95823 Is that a video title?

  • I despise gnomes. Never seen anyone play them except for the bonuses and they hever seem to have a good reason for being in a campaign world. Never wanna see a gnome again.

  • @MandragGanon I like lawn gnomes but other than that, yes, they are a race I don't have any use for. I have no desire to play one & when I hear someone else in a game is going to play one, I'm like come on now, really?

  • Great topic here. Playing Demi Humans in a believable or uniquely racial manner is highly difficult and yet highly rewarding.

  • @TowerGuardDM It certainly is difficult, I like to sit with new players that want to play a non-human & make sure they understand the culture & the racial traits, I don't mean stat block but how those stat blocks would change the way the creature looks at the world & interacts with it. Thanks for the comment.

  • I think this is why I'm most attracted to taking human characters and making them as unusual as possible.

I always notice that every fantasy world plays upon Earth in some way. It's all always trying to become like current Earth. The old races for example, dying out to leave ultimately of course humans (the young whippersnappers) as the remaining single race. As seen in for example Middle Earth, Warhammer Fantasy and the Orcs series by Stan Nicholls.

  • @RobertJFreemantle I'm in the process of writing a fantasy world, I'd be very interested to hear some more examples of how you think fantasy worlds play upon Earth. This is something I've really tired not to do & seeing perspective pitfall from your view might be helpful. So any more ideas here would be appreciated.

  • @woodwwad Gosh, it's the sort of thing I suppose I'd observe at the time when I see it. I'll try to bear it in mind.

  • @RobertJFreemantle right on

  • As always a great video :)

  • @Illservan thank you

  • I laughed for 5 minutes at the Mark the elf comment. We actually had a player name an elf Frank Gomez back in the day and we never let down since then. Great video as always.

  • @PagrZero Frank Gomez as in the wrestler? My mate named his horse Phil Anselmo (ala the band Pantera) once in MERPs :)

  • @chingerspy My nephew named his first character Megadeth, this was many, many years ago.

  • @PagrZero hell yeah, you should never let a monkey's ass live that one down, well done.

  • I like all of your concepts of non-humans, however I don't think that many people portray their non-human races in that way, many people simply want the bonuses. Which is why I'm personally all for house ruling races: Maybe Elves are moved by music and thus cannot bring harm to someone who is singing/playing but everytime they bring out passion within another they get 4 +1 bonus modifiers to spend as they choose that day (just an example, not something I use)

  • @tewalker13 Yes, you are right, a lot of people just play them for the bonuses which is the shitz. You should never play a race for those reasons, the choice should always be able the joy of role-playing, after all that's how you "win" the game by having a great time & that begins with your character choices. I understand what you are saying there, I don't insintivize that way, I like to do so through experience. There are players that can pull this off though, I've seen it.

  • Cool :)

  • @Vdecepticon thanks

  • So, how does a human play something that is not human? There is a reason most characters are human+ of some sort. Dwarves are oddly Scottish miners, Elves are hippies, Hill Giants appear to be soccer hooligan, etc. It's awesome if a player can pull off what you suggest. But I haven't met many of them.

    I despise humancentric campaigns.

I spent years sketching 'racial' weapons.

Have you seen actual gamers dance? It is not pretty.

  • @tetsubo57 Lol, yes, I've seen that happen a few times. Fortunately some of them were hot chick gamers so that was for that better to watch them dance. But even if they are not, if it is something they are doing in character, I'm all for it. I totally agree with you, that this is something that most do not pull off which is why I was thinking it was worth a video, to try to share some tips on making a portrayal of a non-human as close to believable as the talents of that player will allow them.

  • Oh and FEMALE DWARVES HAVE BEARDS!

  • @DarthAzabrush I've seen them done both ways in D&D artwork but you can certainly have them go that way.

  • I find a lot of non human races are just exagerations of a particular human archetype. For example 40k Orks are basically big green space chavs!

  • @DarthAzabrush That can certainly be true, but it is important to bring those exaggeration to the forefront, make them really believable.

  • What was that ?

  • @23penguins32 Which part?

  • @woodwwad That was my smart-ass way of asking about that mention of me at the beginning. But honestly, I didn't get it. WTH are you talking about (at the start when you mention me and Elf) ? :)

  • @23penguins32 I was talking about how much I hate long swords & then that my character got ahold of a +5 long sword, holy avenger & just gave it to you (not that I could have done much with it) but just that I hate that weapon & have no interest in it. It is just played to death to me, got it?!

  • @woodwwad Gods, that's right, it is a longsword. See, I don't really think of it as 'mine' yet, as I haven't decided what to do with it. That's another tough topic from the Gent, because of my class : do I return it in honour ; or do I take the Tiefling's word as this Paladin in Fortitude is not to be trusted and has gone off the rails..... Tests at every corner there. You weren't going to keep the avenger anyway, let's be real, eh.

I have no problem with longswords. It's a practical weapon.

  • @23penguins32 yeah, it'll be interesting to see what you do. My character is very confused as to why you don't keep it, but then again, he's not good.

  • @woodwwad No, I know. And that's cool too : the difference in alignments / PCs. I have to sort this out. Is the Tiefling spellslinger telling the truth and correct ? Then, is it honourable or indeed right to keep it ? Should it just be returned anyway as it is not mine ? Should I keep it in any case ? Would it be bad / evil / dark to return the avenger and find the Paladin is no longer a Paladin, per se, and it fuels his crusade to flip Fortitude into Arcadia ? That's good :)

  • @23penguins32 yes, there is a lot to think about, I'm sure it'll make for an interesting part of the game. Of course The Golden Dream Thorn would simply say he pulled it from the head of the enslaved & Dispater let him have it, so why, of course it should be yours. After all, I gave it to you. But I certainly like how you've made it a delima, gotten some good rp miles out of it already.

  • @woodwwad Thanks, man. I do think we're both getting our miles in. I am really enjoying the RP in this game. I always do, yes of course. I think here's something I've never done before : the quiet, contemplative observer who is quite new to all of the surroundings and experiences so far. I hear you playing your PC and sometimes have to think 'no, I must be quiet, I must meditate on this for a few moments to find the chant from the dark of it all'.

It is a dilemma, one of a few going on I think:)

  • @23penguins32 Yes, well everything is working very well. I'd been on The Earl to run this for months before I finally twisted his arm & he seems to be having a lot of fun with it, which is great, so I hope we get to play this for a good long time.

  • @woodwwad Me as well. I don't like 'short' games. But we've talked about that before. I'm very glad to be a part of this one. It's truly excellent.

  • @23penguins32 Yeah, I'm looking forward to the game this Friday. Yes, short games aren't good, I've played a few that were designed to be 1 shots or short that were great but most of the time short games are just campaigns that crash. How many games have we played in Planescape so far? 8?

  • @woodwwad Yeah, 8 sessions. Only due to missing those 2 weeks in a row. So not that many in the grand scheme, according to my sort of ethos or idiom or approach to games. It's funny to me that I'm actually feeling a little bit of something like a regression to how I felt in high school or university when gaming. This one with you and the Gent happens every week (barring some sort of unfortunate interruption, of course). That's much more how I used to play than how I play now in person. It's good

  • @23penguins32 Yeah, I really like to gaming on friday night, that started in high school & if I'm not gaming on a friday night I usually feel jacked. I'm highly habitual, so that's my preferred night of gaming. It's the only gaming I've done since we started aside from running 1 one on one game that went well & playing in two D&D games once each that were the shitz.

  • @woodwwad Me as well. Actually in high school, Friday was date night and Saturday afternoon to Sunday sometime was gaming. But I know exactly what you mean. I've been one-on-one's with my group and with my daughter, who also got to play with one of them as well. But I haven't done any playing other than this. I think my last play as a player was in 1993. So this is a treat beyond fantasy for me. I'd love (read : ADORE) to be in 2 games / week. This one, obviously, then run one. Be perfect

  • @23penguins32 See I was the other way around, Saturday was date night for me. I really loved blowing off steam after class on friday with all the guys coming over and running some D&D, mostly Ravenloft. Wow, 1993, I know you'd said it had been a long time but that's mad. Glad to be able to share it with you then, let's just hope the clan doesn't have to eat you.

  • @woodwwad Well, that's not why I left the breakfast table...but I certainly think 'this is worse than the Kardashians...'.

Keep in mind, 1993 was tournament play as well at Gen-Con. So it wasn't even a 'real' campaign. I think it was Gen-Con that year ? Saturday was our game night because we didn't have so many time restrictions. We could being at 2pm or the like and go till 6pm on Sunday if we wanted. Often we did. And, most of the girls were 'we have to go out on Friday or else'. Prefer game:)

  • @23penguins32 The Kardashians don't eat people, but we do!

Well running over 24 hours is a bit much even for me. I'm not sure what the longest session I've been in was but I don't think I've done any that long. I've thought about going to one of these big cons, after I finish my game book, I think I might go to one.

  • @woodwwad Oh, I'm not so sure, a part from Jenner...

Don't get me wrong. We would take breaks. Like sleep for 4 hours. Play a game of basketball or soccer. Have a pizza, etc. It wasn't constant for that long. Thought our average was 10-12 hours at that time. Even at university I never DM-ed for less than 8 hours in a session. Any session, even solo. So I'm a bit of a loss of experience when it comes to the lesser lengths in game time.

You should go to one of the big cons at least once. At least

  • @23penguins32 Yeah, I think you are right about the cons, but I think I'll wait until I have a business reason to go, make it worth it. Well you always have to take a break for some dinner during a long session. I love long sessions, I really don't like to run a short game, it always makes me feel rushed. I enjoy letting single scenes last for hours, so the rp can really be built.

  • @woodwwad Good point about the cons. I've enjoyed the small ones so much more. I'd only go to a big one again if I had a 'point' to be there, something to promote, sell, discuss, etc. For me, the longer the better. It does reach a point where some people begin to lose it, get sleepy or tired. I get that. You have to know your group. My groups in HS & uni were unrelenting non-somnambulists. It was great. It was : let's go and just keep going ! No sleep till Brooklyn !

Don't like rushed in any way

  • @23penguins32 Ah, no Beastie Boys, they are the ballz.

  • @woodwwad Then you don't know 'Paul's Boutique' or 'Hello Nasty'. Brilliant stuff. You must chill !

  • @23penguins32 I'll chill your mind for all time!

  • @woodwwad 'I'll stir fry you in my wok !'

  • @23penguins32 I bet you like Kiss too.

  • @woodwwad Dare I say...can't stand KISS. I don't see the point. Not good on any level. Sorry. Yuck.

  • @23penguins32 well, at least you get points there, they are the drizzling shitz.

  • @woodwwad I never thought I would say this : at least we agree on drizzling shit

  • Word up, Ander. Non-humans aren't just dudes with weird ears or beards. They're... well, non-human!

Elves are unknowable and inscrutable fey. They've lived for centuries. Some of them spend decades pondering the shape of a leaf. Elves and dwarves have watched entire lineages of their human counterparts rise and fall. What human can wrap his mind around THAT, I ask you? What man could contemplate THAT on the tree of woe?

PS- New Conan movie is drizzling balls. He doesn't even punch a camel.

  • @Onionkid99 That's a jack, still you get voted up from me for the tree of woe mention, love that line. You are absolutely correct, their long lives mean they view the world so differently.
