@maxinpains you'll get a pretty good start if you get the Gerald Kein full hypnosis beginner-intermediate-expert DVD, and there's always hypnosis dot com and freehypnosiscommunity is also very great, full of learners and teachers trying to help each other out with experiences. sorry for late anwer, I haven't been on very much :p
Wow, that's amazing. How long did it take you to learn? I'd love to be able to do that except I wouldn't know where to start... And your friend falling asleep at 3:06? Looked quite painful hitting the ground haha
took me about two weeks, it's pretty easy when you understand how and why it works^^ I got some books on the subject and started reading scripts, and watching a load of videos here, with inductions and stuff^^ and hypnosis, com has some pretty cool stuff, free of course^^ and yeah he fell on a very soft vacuum cleaner, haha
I'd say it's "fake" in the sense in which faith-healing and other kinds of religious experience are fake; they aren't conscious forgeries/deceptions, but there's still no reality in them, since they're based on shared fantasy and social compliance.
I wouldn't say it's based on shared fantasy or social compliance, what about one-on-one session with a hypnotherapist?
hypnosis is pure psychology, nothing superficial or spiritual. but because hypnosis often get compared with nonsense psychics and healers, it tends to put the wrong picture in people's head when they hear about hypnosis. a lot of christians believe it's the work of the devil too haha
The same effects can apply in a one-on-one session, because it's also a kind of social setting, with its own implicit "rules" and hence expectations on the part of the subject of what will happen. The only effect of hypnosis per se is psychological/linguistic trickery to make the subject think that what happens is the result of the hypnotist, when it's really just a product of his own imagination.
People will go along because they want/expect to, and then rationalise to themselves afterwards that it was all the result of hypnosis. The claims made by hypnotists either cannot be tested rigorously, or simply fail tests.
There's really no evidence that you can get anything through hypnosis that you can't get simply by talking to the person (which is all that it really involves anyway, leaving aside dramatic effects like inductions).
well of course it's the person's own imagination, the hypnotist is just triggering the creative side of them. and no, there is no hard evidence that hypnosis is "real" if you will, and there's basically nothing special happening, even though the person will be manipulated into not remembering his/her own actions during hypnosis. someone told me that they saw this hypnotist that hypnotized someone to believe that a card was marked on the back, so that when he shuffled the deck
the subject could point out the correct card by looking at the backside of all of the cards... which is complete bullshit, of course, because that would imply that hypnosis gives you superhuman powers or something.
point is, hypnosis is real to the degree of people being able to change their life by hypnotherapy, because they believe that something significant has happened to them, and that they are somewhat changed. and yes, you're right, you could do the same with just talking to a person
but that's far more complicated, and is called therapy, and it takes more time and money. if a person believes he was in a trance state, and honestly cannot remember what he was told during the session, then it is because his belief of the effect of hypnosis is so strong it actually blocks out the memory of him being hypnotized in the first place. and that's what hypnosis is, just psychology and mind tricks.
check out Derren Brown's video "Trains of Thought", it's slightly related to hypnosis^^
Good point, but it's worrying that someone with real psychological problems could go to a charlatan with no real psychiatric training. The reason why therapy is more complicated and involved is that the people who do it have a proper medical education, and a far better understanding of what they're doing.
Besides, there's no evidence that using hypnosis to stop smoking is any more effective than other methods - people will give it up if they really want to, and not if they don't.
Call me old fashioned, but I believe that real medicines work whether people believe in them or not - anything else is faith healing in my book ;-)
And bear in mind that "alternative" therapies create an image of success by not reporting their failures - they never have to go through proper clinical trials (or they simply perform no better than placebo).
The problem is that "hypnosis and the placebo effect are so heavily reliant upon the effects of suggestion and belief that it would be hard to imagine how a credible placebo control could ever be devised for a hypnotism study."
So I worry that some people use the mumbo-jumbo of inductions and trances to create an air of authority, when in reality the treatments they offer can't be distinguished from placebo.
yes unfortunately there are some untrained charlatans out there, but the first rule i learned while studying hypnosis was "do NOT do both stage hypnosis and hypnotherapy". simply because hypnotherapy has a responsibility, and stage hypnosis is just for entertainment sake. but in a world where millions believe in a talking snake and a man living in a fish (it's in the bible so it HAS to be true right? lol), no wonder placebo has such a great effect. did you know hypnosis was used as anesthesia
during surgery when they ran out of medicine during wars? I find that quite interesting, so I tried removing pain from a friend of mine, who had been complaining about his arm all day, cus he fell down the stairs or something... i simply hypnotized him to subconsciously ignore the pain in his arm, so as it of course is impossible to to anything physical about his pain with hypnosis, he actually didn't feel that his arm was hurting. in this case this was okay, because he didn't have painkillers
to ease the pain until he saw a doctor, but when i read when studying the subject of hypnosis as pain relief, i realized that in most circumstances, that is the wrong solution when someone comes with a physical problem, because they will most likely think that you can fix the problem, instead of making you not notice it. for instance, if someone had a headache, and i hypnotized them into not having a headache, there would still be something wrong, and it could have consequences. unfortunately
that is something that does not concern some hypnotherapist, rookies, and charlatans, scammers etc, who's only after the payment. and yes, I've seen the interview, he goes more into detail on the subject in his book "Tricks of the Mind", only more cynical. and it's a great read too, I highly recommend it. btw we totally just filled this entire page! haha
I'm interested, where did you first learn about this?
And when you say (in your other video) that you could make your friend stand up against his will, what exactly do you mean? I'd always thought that hypnosis/PHS couldn't allow you to do that.
Maybe I'm just a total skeptic about everything, but I have an unshakeable feeling that it would never work on me, lol.
the pain relief? I don't remember, I think it was when i first started, reading scripts and watching anything I could find of Derren Brown. I got like a ton of e-books on mentalism, NLP, Hypnosis, Mind Tricks, Psychology etc, and I just keep on reading :p
one important thing about hypnosis and such is that you have to make yourself an authority figure to the subject, with subtle commands like "stand here", "do this" etc, you'll subconsciously gain his trust. and after I hypnotized him
i explained how hypnosis worked etc, because I like being open and honest as it is an interesting subject after all. and then again, while i was in a conversation, I "lectured" him, as if, you know, I was explaining, he was nodding and agreeing, and then i thought I'd test some boundaries, and told him(since he already was agreeing with me) that the effect of hypnosis worked sooo good on him, that I would be able to control his limbs, because the effect hadn't "wore off" totally yet.
and of course, that worked, and if you examine Derren Brown's "voodoo" video, I think you'll understand why, as he explains what he does and why it works. Derren Brown is pretty much the reason I'm into this kinda stuff. and heck I was skeptical as hell even while trying to learn this stuff, I didn't even believe hypnosis was "real" before i saw Derren Brown. it was something about his way of being honest about his methods that got me really looking into whats it all about.
btw, I know you're a skeptical, but have you heard about non-direct hypnosis? as in, the subject doesn't know that he is being hypnotized before he wakes up? search for "derren brown mall" and "hypno sculpture", both great examples, which works roughly 60-70% of the times. 80% if you know the techniques (on the hypno sculpture vids), things like body language reading to determine whether or not the subject is going to respond well to your inductions etc, just watch the vids, it's pretty cool^^
I do find the psychology behind it interesting, like confusing people by giving them contradictory/subtly incoherent instructions, like "try to separate your hands, but you won't be able to" or "red objects are now invisible" (you obviously have to see objects to tell whether they're red or not!). Or, as you say, getting people into a "habit" of agreeing with you, then you slip in different suggestions and they still accept them.
and when they realize that the suggestions work, they can instantly be put into a "trance" with a direct command like "sleep". as it disconnects the conscious from the subconscious mind. and i know that sounds a bit homeopathic, but it's true though, at least after my experiences. when they are in the trance state, they take your commands as if they were telling themselves what to do, it comes natural. with limits of course, you cannot give anyone commands that go directly against their morals.
if they do not take the suggestions you give them, but they still really really want it to work, they will believe that it works, and it's a good example of social compliance, as mentioned earlier. there are so many different kinds of hypnosis related subjects, I think I'm just gonna start calling it manipulation =p
yeah I've tried, the closest I've come to was a relaxation, where i started to feel my arms go numb and such... it's tricky though, since i know "all the tricks", i kinda know whats coming, and it doesn't bite on me. the inductions, especially the instant and rapid inductions are to distract your subject, to give a direct command to put them to "sleep", as the "arm pull" shown in the video. and when someone tries to do that to me, I just keep thinking about when the command "sleep" comes.
Yeah, after a while you can easily predict what they're going to do, since so much of it follows a set formula.
One really hilarious thing I saw was when a guy (ironically) forgot which number he was supposed to forget and made a complete mess of the counting...
haha yeah, been there =p I hypnotized a friend of mine to forget the number 3 or something, and his reaction to having 11 fingers on his hands was priceless! he was also very skeptic to hypnosis, and didn't think it would work, so it was an extra bonus seeing the look on his face desperately trying to count his fingers haha
lol, what I meant was that he forgot which number the hypnotist wanted him to forget, so he ended up forgetting the wrong one. I think he might have been having a laugh ;-)
Still, it sounds pretty cool. Are you suggesting it might work on me? :P
haha, that reminds me of "Extras", dunno if you've seen it. anyways, of course, he could have pretended to be hypnotized for fun, I've had some of those too, I usually see it very clearly that they are just acting though, and then i test their limits (cus they wouldn't do anything against their morals, they'd just "wake up" if they were really hypnotized). once I hypnotized a guy, and it didn't work, but he wanted it to work, so he acted. I told him to hit on his best (male) friend
and fair enough, that wasn't too bad. but when i told him to undress his mate, he started blushing but reluctantly starting to try and undress his buddy. of course I said to him then and there (in front of all of his friends) that I could see he wasn't really hypnotized, so I was just playing him as he tried playing them. he made a complete fool out of himself haha.
and yeah of course, It might work on you, if you have a good hypnotist, and not some random guy only doing rapid inductions =p
for instance, if someone were to slip you subconscious suggestions to make you forget your name (without being aware of it happening to you before it has happened like in Derren's "Trains of thought" vid), and then you're in this confused state desperately trying to remember your name, you're distracted from focusing on actually being hypnotized. so a command like "hey, look at this *shows you your hand and moves it over your face* and just sleep" comes so out of the blue
and so randomly, that it might actually put you in a trance. that's the HOW, and the WHY is this: when you're confused, your brain is gonna work really hard to sort out the confusing. and while your subconscious and your conscious mind is working to try and solve the issue, a direct command (by an authority figure such as the hypnotist that made you forget your name in the first place) like "sleep" can be taken as a solution to your confusion, a direct command from yourself, if you will.
the "trance state" is nothing more than making your brain take a break. it's like you know when you're going to sleep, and the moment right before you fall asleep and your leg twitches so you wake up again? you know that you haven't fallen asleep yet, but still you can't really remember being awake. that's one type of trance, the good deep relaxation trance^^ then there's the "woops i forgot to make a turn" trance, where you just go on autopilot for a few seconds when driving a car for instance.
That might not be so effective with me, possibly because it's not against my morals to hit on guys :S You could say I have at least one thing in common with Derren Brown, lol ;-)
also, is there something you can do where after they are awake, everytime you say a code word they have the urge to cluck or something? (just an example)
Really simple. when they are in the state where they do various things, you simply give them the command to "sleep" again. then you tell them that when they now wake up, everything will go back to normal, and they are fully awake. count to five and say "awake!"

But I have a question. How can you make the subject awake? I mean, from hypnosis.
