  • Nice Ory. I like the perspective, your schooling and mine were quite different so I'm not sure how to relate to that part, but other than that I agree with you. I know that now that I am out of school and the restrictive learning environment of school, I am much more interested in learning and I will often forgo watching television to read up on a subject of interest. I think that now entertainment and learning have merged for me. I learn about what I'm entertained by learning. -Max

  • Thanks Max.

  • It's really kind of a horrible misconception that the arts are seen as a "quick" way of getting money.

As the child of two actors, it's become very apparent that acting, or making music are the two least lucrative career paths you could possibly follow.

  • I know. Still, I'm going to try with my music.

  • & I'm going to try with my acting.

I know exactly where you're coming from. You gotta do what you gotta do.

  • True.

  • Hey Orygyn,

Fascinating video. I think one the gravest errors we make concerning the acquisition of knowledge or the development of intellect in the Western world is that we automatically confuse it with academia. Schools, universities etc as they currently manifest (certainly in our own Britain) are not places where young people are encouraged to learn or suffused with an enthusiasm for independent learning; in point of fact, owing to the problems within the environments which you cite...

  • ...plus many others, they seem to serve precisely the opposite; they engender a profound ennui and apathy concerning the acquisition of knowledge and actively work to stifle creativity, independence and abstract thought. This is largely due to the fact that the problems of the environment have themselves become institutionalised as just another part of the "educational" experience, e.g. hideous school yard tribalism, the imposition of personal tastes, opinions etc by teachers; teachers who...

  • ...themselves have no passion or enthusiasm for what they teach or who bring their personal problems to the classroom, etc etc. I'm of the opinion that far more useful and meaningful development occurs for most outside of the classroom, largely through experience and independent learning which comes about as a result of genuine enthusiasm for the subjects in question. In that regard, as you yourself point out, I believe that "entertaining" activities can be far more stimulating and inspiring...

  • ...than any amount of classes, lectures etc. RowanFortuneWood has some excellent videos on his channel concerning the status of home education and state education that make the case far more comprehensively than I can. Superb stuff, 5*

    George

  • I'll check out Rowan's videos when I can. Thanks for recommending them.

  • Interesting perspective. Surprising, considering the source, but interesting.

    -Modias

  • Thanks Modias.

  • I despise entertainment mainly because it is never within a stones throw of reality eg. the movie pearl harbor pure crap and that knowing movie, creationists wet dream pure crap on the slapping hand though, you're right education has driven out our curiosity... though faith had a hand in that too but getting back to entertainment have you seen the cartoons kids are growing up with??? eg. totally spies, fairly odd parents, etc disturbing
  • That's quite a coincidence, I just saw Knowing yesterday. Religious connotations, completely unrealistic but I have to admit I did like it. And yeh I think my brother didn't grow out of Cartoon Network he just got fed up of the shit on it.

  • I think we should try to make enough room for both in our lifes. As they, to put it simple, are what makes life worth living.

  • I agree.

  • And as for the entertainment section at the end, I agree with you completely. Entertainment is very important and is rightfully craved. However, that doesn't mean that people shouldn't take they're education seriously. Both education and entertainment are VERY important for humanity in general.

  • Thanks, I agree with what you said.

  • For me, it seems I learn most of what I know outside of school grounds. I seek out education on my own time and learn about things that I feel are relevant to me in some way or another. I don't like school because of the schedule... but I don't think they could function without one, so I accept it. However, when it comes to my education, I don't look to my school to give me one.
