  • John k. Samson defines epic

  • I wish there was a tab for this somewhere.

  • @BobbyBeanBagz There is, youtube it

  • @Pugnacio If there is, I can't find it =/

  • @BobbyBeanBagz Youtube search "How to play GIFTS by JOHN K. SAMSON"

  • @Pugnacio Thanks!

  • @Pugnacio If you check it, I posted the chords in standard tuning. Cheers!

  • so I don't mean to offend anyone, but he will always just be the other guy from propagandhi to me. and whenever true weakerthan fans speak i just chuckle to myself and go "girls with the greenest eyes".

  • @jazzmasterjesus

you do realize that greenest eyes was originally his song yeah?

  • @nateinkanoya ya but showdown isn't. greenest eyes is his, and preamble is chris'. And based on the music I would assume the Hannah wrote the song. Gifts on the other hand sounds like a sped up weakerthan song... and so this is HIS song. where showdown, is really just a propagandhi song. no matter who's singing.

  • That was the only way he could have made Gifts better

Absolutely perfect melodies conversing with beautiful guitar lines

  • Weakerthans/Propagandhi vinyl available @ chisel records dot com.

  • Doesnt matter what prop album is your fav, but i think everyone should recognize that John did not fit into that band. Todd Kowalski is a much better fit and John has written beautiful music with the Weakerthans

  • Great lyrics, great cover and great band !!!!

  • Capaciteeeeeeeeey!

  • I really wish this will someday end up on a Weakerthans album. It's one of my favorite songs.

  • Love you JKS! Been a big fan for over a decade now... your songs mean a lot.

  • i'm so glad john left propagadhi. i think that this is how his music sounds best. after he left, prop got way better and he started an awesome band with its own sound. seriously could not ask for a gooder outcome!

  • @mysweetgb Gooder! CAPACITY

  • Two entirely contrasting bands, both equally as good imo. You don't know what you're talking about though mate.

  • samson is epic. i love his work with propagandhi, it's ashame he left.

the weakerthans are cool too though, albeit very different!

  • why is this titled as a cover ? its johns song

  • 'cos it was still a Propagandhi song nonetheless.

  • because it was still played by the band propagandhi, the collective band owns it i assume because everyone played in it.

  • @NearRhyme

It also says acoustic, even though that's an electric guitar. Perhaps better to just walk away slowly...

  • OMG, how amazing, didn't know he ever played that song with the The Weakerthans!

  • love love it

  • have I commented on this yet? I forget.

this is a great video and thanks for uploading it! also I really like the smiley in the title.

  • Although, the twat shouting capacity spoils it.

  • same here!!

  • This is another example of one of those songs that give you goosebumps on your back, not many songs can do that!

  • epic song

  • *lovvveee this song.

he did a sweet cover of a really good propagandi song.

ohhh what i'd give to see John K. Samson live. <3

  • Is it really a cover though? He wrote it and was in Propagandhi for a good while. That would be like saying Streetlight Manifesto covers Catch 22 songs. Sillypants.

  • haha true!

i didnt really put much thought into that..

and woo! catch 22 and Streelight are AMAZING!:D

  • Exactly, it's kind of a partial cover, as although he may have written the song, the rest of the band members who weren't in propagandhi would be covering it.

  • What an amazing song, John K. Samson is such a great songwriter :)

  • I play this once or twice a week

  • don't suppose you have a tab for this, or can sketch one up? i know what most the chords are but im scratching my head over the picking.

i wish the crazy fool would put this on an album, its pure awesome.

  • You gotta capo the third fret, I believe it's

    C (X3201X), G* (32001X), A-(X0221X), E-*(02201X),

    F+(13321X), C (X3201X), G* (32001X)

Just put them in the right order after that

He plays around with the C on the b string (first finger on the second last string during G and E chords)

picking is more or less 123 123 13,

with 1 and 2 being the lowest two notes of the chord, and 3 being the highest 2

Anyways I don't have my guitar on me but that's what I think

  • it's in drop D - chords are D, A, Bm, Fsharp, D A bla bla,

i know all the bits except the slide from D to A which i'm stumped on.

you can tell its drop D though, listen to the low bass note, has to be.

  • yeah I just play it with capo on 3. He plays it lower. Yes you can play it in drop D if you want to hear the base note ring, and I'm sure that's what he does. But my way is easier for playing on my shitty acoustic guitar (and yes I know that it's not how he wrote it but in the scheme of things it's the exact same notes minus one)

  • Don't you mean the second fret? Either way this is a good alternative method for those without the nous to tune into drop D.

  • Gifts is such a fantastic song.

  • i love that background vocal! Best part!

  • yeh the 'CAPACITY' bit is awesome

  • The line "Spent half the span of some lost culture's rise and fall, but I'm as clueless as a drooling four year old" is one of the best pieces of lyrics ever written.

    Salut, John K. Samson!

  • agreed... the entire song has sweet lyrics but "wrote this selfish sadness on a bathroom wall, spent half the span of some lost cultures rise and fall" is a fucking awesome line

  • he's playing a Gibson Melody Maker. And no, it isn't acoustic, I've been wondering about that myself. It's also not a Propagandhi cover... he wrote the song himself. I think Propagandhi does own the rights to the song though, I heard he sold the songs to them when he split from the band.

  • Well, I think Propagandhi give a f*** about the rights - since in the booklet of How To Clean Everything they say "all song are absolutely anti-copyright." Fat Wreck Chords might object, but... well, Fat Mike wouldn't wanna make a complete idiot of himself, too, I guess.

So, here's the bottom line: Everything is fine.

  • umm yeah anti meaning against.. copywright means they care.. anti means they don't. idiot

  • it was never about money or owning the songs.. i could release antimanifest right now and i bet chirs H. wouldnt give a f***.

  • hes not releasing it anyways hes just playing it live, so theres no need for the rights to the song .

  • playing electric guitar with clean sound (no distortion) doesn't make it an acoustic song.

  • @filbunkish, and what if its a guitar with a piezo pickup, then it would classify as an acoustic song :)

  • wow, a John K. Samson video with sound quality. Good job, awesome song, one of my favourites.

  • great song even in acoustic version..i also like propagandhi's version a lot..

  • hes in the freaking band

  • douche

  • what you mean no no no..... this is pure genius

  • hahaha..sure.

  • douchebag

  • Muldy Douchebag.

  • just brilliant. love propagandhi, love weakerthans. LOVE CANADIAN INDIE SCENE!!!

  • derp.

  • Comment removed

  • @Jmulder84 he doesnt need permission to perform a song he wrote

  • pfft, and i'll bet you write the most awesome songs!

both versions are awesome! but sadly you fall short of this, and propagandhi hates people like you!

    ROH

  • Actually, I saw the Weakerthans a few days ago and got a chance to talk with John Sampson after the show for a few minutes and mentioned that I would have liked to hear him play this song. He said he will probably never play it again because he wrote it when he was 18 and he is now 36 and there are just so many other songs he would rather play. ... Moral being technically, this song has always been his 'crap.' Although I probably wouldn't use that particular adjective.

  • thats a blue shirt, retard.

  • thats a electric guitar.

  • is that a serious comment or are you trying to point out the extremely obvious?

  • nevermind, i see why you said that now.

  • hehe oke:P

  • plesa we need tab!!! tab hero help

    1

  • id also love a tab for this, someone should pull their finger out.

    cmon john k!

  • I learned how to play it (not quite perfect) by watching his hand in the videos It's in drop D tuning.

... it doesn't sound nearly as good when I play it.

  • i was going to ask the same

  • someone teach me how to play this song?

  • I'll pay for a video of "letter of resignation" by propaghandi, on an old 7" split w/ FYP. I have the split but need a digital copy

  • I know it's been about a year, but if you still need it I can get it for you.

  • I must have had money then b/c I won't pay. But I do appreciate the offer. If you have the split 7" sound pm me.

  • This song is soooo beautiful... It always makes me feel better...

  • i love him.
