Oh yeah!! I remember those old clay wheel boards! The Black Knight and Super Surfer!! Still have scars to this day,and im now 47! Ha! But i wear them proudly like badges of honor!!
Remember kids these were clay and metal wheels in the 1960s. Urathane did not happen until Cadillac plastics in Anaheim made the first ones around 73-74.
@blightsofthehighway ,Man! You are so right. I'm from Los Angeles and was a kid jere in the 60's. It's a cesspool now. It looks like a Third World country in the area I grew up in. It breaks my6 heart to see the beautiful well kept homes that were once on my block look so filthy and trashy. The people there now have no pride of ownership or self dignity. How I miss those wonderful days.
If L.A. in the 60s was filled with xenophobic people like you that blame all of this country's problems on brown people I would hate to live in those times.
@Joe402 Oh really? Well then why don't you go stand on the corner of First St and Boyle Ave on a saturday at 2AM and tell me if I'm just blowing wind pal. While your at it,open your eyes and take a daytime walk through that neighborhood and look at the homes and condition of the streets and graffiti wiped all over the place. Xenophobia? yeah right! How about reality?. Si piensas que estoy echando mentira ,pues anda y vete a verlo tu mismo.
Well if you really feel that way about urban decay I suggest you stop voting for the conservative politicians who caused it. I live here too btw so you can't pull the "IF YOU LIVED HERE YOU WOULD AGREE WITH ME" card.
@Joe402 LOL What the fuck do politiucians have to do with getting a lazy shiftless waste of air to pick up a broom and a lawnmower and a hose and clean their dirt shit up? What the hell is this depending on politicians and the government bullshit. Be your own individual and CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF! You know what thats called? being a god citizen and being an asset and not a liability. What the fuck is all this government crap your clinging to? Pick up a fukin broom lazy ass.
@Joe402 republican? what the f**k do you know about anything you government sucking parasite? This is to your "new society" you f**king liberal c**ksucker
@Joe402 Xenophobia? LOL . Pinche marxista! Ponte a trabajar pendejo. Get off your lazy Berkley ass and work. I'm an individual hard working Mexican and I'm not a sheeple who follows the marxist with their stinking Che T-shirts and bullshit rhetoric for lazy shiftless bums who don't want to exercise their own brains to get ahead in life. All they want is government tit from cradle to grave. What a stagnant spirit killing way of life. Go hit your bong proffesor.
@Joe402 LOL, there are many others just like me in the tea party movement among other movements and we're growing. See you on the battlefield one day nimrod. .
@OldMrMemories i have the exact sentiments Mr. Old Memories and the same background ...im a son of immigrants who is sick and tired of looking at my once beautiful city as a tijuana retread..My Mexican Illegal Immigrant clients who once would NEVER ever think of going on the dole havestarted to join in and signed up for Permanent Disability.,..non citizens can get permanent disability? With her son she make $24,000 thousand a year tax free...it doesnt feel good for the hard working people here.
@OldMrMemories I was looking at some "vintage Los Angeles" videos, ran into this one, and I was marveled, no appalled at just how great LA once was, there was this elegance and cleanliness about it. I grew up in LA in the 70's, then I still remember LA was nicer, I've seen it deteriorate at the hands and influx of so many who simply come to the city, to the country, to just take advantage of it, to destroy it, to cheapen it. You and I, are not alone at our assessment of present day LA.
Man this is awesome! I always thought most time skating on pre-urethane boards was spent falling, and breaking arms and such. Skating had a horrible reputation before urethane. Danny Bearer, huh? Sorry he died. Would like to learn more about the pre-Z-boys days. It would be a really good subject for a documentary.
DANNY BEARER...THE ULTIMATE GODFATHER OF SKATING...died this week Sept.2009. his funeral was today Oct.2...at Saint Monica's in Santa Monica.
danny is the first tall blonde on this vid and the First World Champion EVER in the sport..in 1965 ,,,,heart attack at age 59.
he will be forever remembered for his fluid style and tricks that set the standards for the billions of kids who ever will or who have,,,skateboarded. R.I.P u old stick,,,,my good old friend. "peace-out....danny...peace."
HEY EVERYONE. Guess what ? that school at 1:27 mark is Brentwood Elementary school. At Bundy and San Vicente. As it pans you can see the church in the background and the construction of the office building. OH MAN this is so cool. THANKSSSSSSSS
I was told to check this out.... I was one of the girls in the background, how fun is that! We made our boards out of old shoe skates, shaped them and glue rubber on the tops for traction! YES! those were the days, barefoot and smooth skating.
Love this old skate vids. I got my first steel wheel board back in the early 1970's, it was old and used when I had it given to me. I bought my first new board in 1974, it was a Cal 240. I still have it in my basement along with many other old skateboards I used back in the day.
man these were the days,i didnt start sk8n till 1973,my first sk8 had steel wheels then i got clay, they were sooo smooth,n these guys rode barefoot!! crazy man!!
the film is backwards in the opening scene. what a trip. thats pali highs parking lot. ill never forget some big kids asked me if i liked tar wheels and i said "tar wheels suck!" and the one guy said " I have tar wheels!" and they chased me up the ivy. HA HA! those were the days!
Being a skateboarder today, this video really makes me take off my hat and respect these guys with all honor. Them, and many other kids like them, were the beginning of a legendary and amazing sport. Thanks so much for this upload, its given me site to the past that I thought was mostly lost in film.
Yeah, this video is classic, I attended, and skated at, a few of these schools. I was Dogtown era age, but I was good friends with Danny's little bro and hung out at their mom's house a lot as a kid - got to see Danny's old photos and trophies.
This video shows that skating was always about something to do when you couldn't surf. The Hobie boys would have been doing the same stuff as the Dogtown boys, if they had the wheels (with the possible exception of Bert's).
This is Danny Bearer and I Would please like to know who is showing Grant Rohloff's film here onthis program. This was shot at Palisades high school, The Malibu of Skateboarding Brentwood Elementary schooland the Sunset Beach of Skateboarding Paul Revere Middle school on Sunset Bld. Please call me at310 452 1030 and email dannybearer@yahoo.com,Very truly yours, Danny Bearer
you placed first in the 1964 Anahiem Nationals flatland slamom right cool to know you still care about skateboarding ( The Reason i know this is "The concrete wave" book has a section on 60's skate gods and you are the first
clay wheels is what killed it till the new ones came-out about 8 yrs. later, then the dogtown era started. the surface had to be cleaned of any small rocks, or else u went flying.
i didnt like steel wheels, i found a board in a dumpster type thing and it had those wheels and i showed it to my dad and i tried to ride it but i just cant get it to work, its in my room currently
just talked to danny bearer (the tallest blonde) and he said peralta, and alva are the best skaters he's evr seen. they were 4yrs. old when this was shot. F.Y.I.
oops there is more footage in wla with all thier friends. but still this is almost 10yrs. b4 dogtown. its funny danny bearer told me a week ago he wishes skating was a clean sport, like when he started it.
why the hell did u put dogtown people in credits? this is when they wer in diappers 4godssake... these are the first world champions at pali high. the hobie skateboard team. fuck they started it all not those bums in santa monica,,but the rich kids with hilton's father fronting the team. torger r.i.p. hi danny. i still have ur board i bought that u won the championship with in 65.... groooooovy man.
This is phenomenal film. It's just begging to be featured in a very cool music video. Damn- this kinda stuff doesn't just come along everyday - or maybe it does - what the fuck do I know? You just gotta know how to look I guess. Let's get awesome................................

You MUST add sound to this video ..... "Sidewalk Surfin'" by Jan & Dean.
"Grab you board and go sidewalk surfin' with me..."
"You can do the tricks the surfers do .... the Quasimodo and the Coffen too!"
"The downhill grade will give you kick ... but if the sidewalks cracked you better pull out quick!"
Bust you buns!
