  • Have you seen or read the book Stuff Irish People Love?

One section talks about the ridiculous manner of teaching Irish, in Irish, as if the student is already fluent.

  • @bobomcgraw In my secondary school I don't even think the teacher spoke Irish to us, just said wrote stuff on the blackboard at the start of class and told us to copy it down. Any conversation he would have had during class was usually in English, which is why I think I started to lose my Irish in secondary

  • @MokongX3M Do not get me started on ordinary level Irish, where we would just sit and read stories and poems, as gaeilge, and never have a clue what they were about.

Or exams you could pass without being able to speak a word of Irish.

They'd give you a paragraph of a story with questions beneath it.

All you had to do was see if a word in the question was in the paragraph and just write out the sentence containing it as your answer.

On a completely unrelated note, have you seen Game of Thrones?

  • @bobomcgraw haha that is off topic alright, haha, yeah I have seen GoT... only just saw it recently though... like actually only two weeks ago (watched it all in 2 days), looking forward to April to see season 2

  • @MokongX3M I had them recorded since the premiere and only started watching them around the start of the year.

Bit of a gap between watching the first episode and starting the second, but then I couldn't get enough.

Started reading the first book too, just finished the part where Tyrion Lannister says goodbye to Jon Snow at The Wall.

The series seems to be a pretty faithful adaptation of the book.

They streamlined it a bit, but that is about it.

  • @bobomcgraw yeah I've not read the books myself but have been told the show did stay very close to it. In fact had a few people say it would be fully possible to go straight to the 2nd book if you only saw the show. I did feel the finale ep of season 1 felt a bit "non-finale-like" but can't wait for April now for season 2.

Oh and you did see the new vid BTW yeah? (ie: go comment on it, haha)

  • @MokongX3M Just watched it, very nice work.

I thought season 1 ended on a pretty good dramatic note.

I saw it coming, but it was still kind of exciting.

They did kill off a load of characters that I really thought would be around for a long time though.

  • @bobomcgraw oh yeah same on the character killing. I thought Eddard was the main character/hero of the story then *bang* gone. Also same with Drogo(sp?), me makes this epic speech about attacking the mainland and giving his son the "iron chair", I was primed for an epic battle, then all of a sudden, no more baby, no more Drogo and no 40,000 man army... way to let down expectations... haha.. I think those were the few things I didn't like about the show, but it's still awesome

  • @MokongX3M I honestly thought Ned was going to be saved at the last second, or that Drogo would be found alive in the ashes because of magic.

It does keep you on your toes though, not knowing what characters are safe, which are doomed.

  • Dude don't worry...People give me a hassle when they ask me why I don't speak Tagalog although I'm Filipino, yet I can understand and speak Cebuano much better

  • @carlvincent12 really? I always thought everyone knew both Tagalog and their native dialect.... In my case then I guess I should have mentioned that I don't speak Ilongo or Bisiya either which my mother and her family speak aswel as Tagalog and my wifes family too. That might also be a reason why I never learned it from my cousins cause they'd be trying to teach me words from all 3 sometimes which is just a head wreck

  • Comment removed

  • My Filipino co-workers speak Tagalog to each other, and it sounds extremely fast!!

  • @MrChalmej It does sound very fast sometimes... though I guess they'd say the same about english speakers if their own english isn't that good, haha

  • Great vid, Franklin! You know this topic is one thing that connects us for sure! For me, I'm closer to understanding Tagalog when I hear it, but not so much when I read it. The pronunciation's pretty tricky.

Your story about your mom not teaching you Tagalog sounds so much like one of Happyslip's old vids. That's sort of my reason as well.

LOL I took French too only because Spanish was too much like Tagalog. I wanted some variety.

  • @regisor94 I find pronouncing tagalog easy enough as it's usually said how it is written, no silent letters or odd accents. You just need to figure out where the syllables are. Remembering the meaning though is another story altogether, haha.

Actually I always wondered why it is you don't speak Tagalog I assumed you were born/grew up in the US and similar to me you just never really heard it growing up? Are both your parents Filipino or like me is it just the one?

  • @MokongX3M Both parents are Filipino, but I guess my mom just thought to teach me and my sister only English. It's okay, most Filipinos speak English anyway! Gotta learn one day.

  • @regisor94 haha yeah that's what I say, just about everyone I know over there speaks english anyway so it's not like they don't understand me... haha.

  • I took Spanish in high school and college, and Irish in college.

I'm really not good at all in either. I could be, I did well enough in the class to be sure of that, I just need people to use them with. I really should focus on Spanish, there are enough Spanish speaking customers I could get some practice, and it's common enough in the US that it would really help my prospects for jobs.

  • @ctraver cool which college offered an Irish course? I'm always getting private messages from people in the US asking if I know where they could learn Irish, didn't think some colleges might offer it

  • I completely understand what you're saying, Franklin. Study shows that when a person is above 12 years old already it is much harder to learn a new language. The best stage to learn a 2nd & 3rd language is at age 3-6 yrs old. A child's brain is like a sponge and will absorb anything. As adults it's very hard to fully learn a new one. I tried. No amount of audio CDs or books worked for me. Just like what you did in @olea24's collab, I could speak it but not really understand what I'm saying. :-)

  • @chinaeyes22 I used to be really fluent in Japanese when I had to work in Tokyo for two years back in 1996 to 1998. Now, I barely remember the words or couldn't understand Japanese TV shows. SO I guess it is true that you eventually forget a language you learned at a later stage in life if you stop using it everyday.

I'm glad that I grew up bilingual as opposed to my cousins who were never thought Tagalog while being raised abroad. Not sure if @regisor94 fully understands Tagalog though. :-)

  • @chinaeyes22 Wow didn't know you used to know Japanese, that is a language I would like to learn.... then I wouldn't have to wait for subtitles or dubbed versions of animé, haha

  • I'm very much the same @MokongX3M in school I studied German for the whole 5 years and passed with a C grade but now I can hardly remember any of it at all.

I also don't speak or understand Farsi (Iranian, seeing as I'm half Iranian) other than a select few words like hello, goodbye, goodmorning and goodnight etc.

Any time in the last 10 or so years that I've tried to learn nothing sticks at all.

  • @kav82 Haha @Kav82 we are both just lingusticly challenged is what I say :)

  • The background looks pretty cool.... though the volume was a bit on the low side. Cool video and its funny how most languages we learn at school we end up forgetting... i guess because we dont use them on a daily basis. Whats your fav part of ireland and the philippines that you have visited?

  • @Katest3r The background is a pic from an Island called Boracay, one of the main beach resorts in the Philippines, known for sunsets such as the one in the pic in the video. Sorry about the volume I forgot to amplify it before I saved it and didn't remember till after I uploaded :P

My fav places? Haha, maybe I'll leave that for another video

  • Boracay in the BG! Awesome! I'm learning tagalog now, because there is a lady I met during my time in the Philippines and I want to learn for the purpose of learning the language and to better connect with her. Good vid Franklin!

  • @Domingo0022IWAY Yeah Boracay is awesome, haha. Good luck on learning the Tagalog... as I said I tried for about 2 years after I met Joy then when I couldn't get anything to stick in my head I said "feck it she speaks english anyway, haha"

  • I have the same problem when it comes to learning languages. The older the more difficult it is! Although I do know some words in many and can use a convincing accent so I am told LOL

I asked many friends in the past to teach me Cantonese, Thai, Tagalog etc but as you say, they end up teaching you bad words! LOL

By observing I understanding from their actions and picking up a few English words they say in conversations. They ask how I know what they are talking about when I join in hehehe :-)

  • @Jagamp Yeah it's handy that there's usually a few words of English thrown in sometimes. I might be able to work out a rough idea of whats going on then... though I might not be correct either, haha
