  • Johnny Cash was there, they didnt meet up to do a recording they all just happen to be at the same place at the same time. They started to have a little jam session and sam phillips the owner of the studio left the tapes running. The majority of the songs they did were gospel, no one said hey lets sing my song now so people 50 years in the future will know I was standing here!! Do some research.

That being said, I couldnt fathom this much talent standing in the same room. Its amazing.

  • Johnny was there picking up a royalty check and neither him nor Carl Perkins knew the words- them being Baptist and E.P & J.L.L were Assembly of God according to Jerry Lee in an interview.

  • Check out (Jerry Lee Lewis on meeting Elvis Presley) on here. It's Jerry Lee in an interview talking about this session. He clearly states that when ever Carl or Johnny Started to sing something that Elvis and (J.L.L) would take over....which is probably why Cash wasn't heard much! but this is proof enough for me, from someone who was most definatly there that Johnny was there!!!

  • I checked the song list for the album, not one Jonny Cash song... I find that odd, I think if he was there they would've done at least one!!!

  • Maybey for the photo op, but I don't really have a fargen clue(I was not there!)))It's strange though, If Johnny was there why is there NONE of his song on here. They would've at least did the one he had out at the time!!!

  • I actuall don't think Cash is there at least not for this song... Elvis talks about him (like He's not there)...at the start of Jericho Road!

  • I certainly hear someone that sounds like Cash near the beginning, right after Elvis says something like "add Johnny Cash to this." Just my two cents worth.

  • @crazyflamingoc i was thinking the same thing..

  • One thing that is for certain is this is truly a historic session. Love it! Thanks for posting it.

  • Too bad there were no pictures taken when Elvis was playing that Gibson. What a rhythm guitarrist Elvis was. Just listen to the sound of thaty guitar. And what a ventriloquist, as when he imitates C&W singer Bill Monroe on the second song.

  • The story goes that he was there for the photo op&not the singin'. But that's been disputed, and he is awfull hard to hear if his is singin. Jerry & Elvis stand out, and Carls voice is quite clear but not Johnny's, If he was there he must have been to far away from the mike! Or sang to softly. Do you know if he sang lead on any of these songs?

  • @TheFarmerfitz Cash said that he was there for the session, but like you said, he was far from the mike and even he conceded that he could barely hear himself on the print, he's also not the only person to come out and say that he was there. Hopefully that'll put this debate to rest, but i doubt it.

  • ugh, someone has facts all messed up j.Cash was part of the Quartet.

  • "I was there and am on those recordings I just sang in a higher key and was a long way from the mic." Johnny Cash.

I know who I believe and it's NOT someone who wasn't there.

  • Cash can clearly be heard on the "Farther Along" cut from Million Dollar Quartet.

  • Cash was there and most definitely sang. The session has been released as a CD and documented. At the time of the recording Perkins was a bigger success than Cash and Cash's style was more similar to Perkins than what we later came to recognize as classic Johnny Cash. Check it out on Wikipedia.

  • I'm not sure who all was around that piano when this was recorded.:) All I know is it is greatness; pure talent. Something too, that seems to be missing today, are people who truly enjoy; that truly embrace, the joy and passion of singing together.

  • @haneysbighouse Yea I know, I do understand your point but what I hate is that every time the argue is over a new dude comes with some comment and starts all over again. But your point is the bottom line of the thing anyway, thanks for your comment.

  • @haneysbighouse He was there and I know it, a picture worth more than a thousand words.

  • Nothing like the 50s

  • my understanding has always been that Johnny Cash was there for part of this session. I don't recall if he was there at the beginning or the end, but he was there for at least part of this session

  • Million Dollar Quartet uh-huh with all those great mistakes haha

  • YEE HAW!

  • I'm not sure what you didn't hear in the beginning when Elvis mentioned Johhny Cash. Johnny Cash was in this session. He mentions it in his second autobiography and Jerry Lee Lewis backs it up in an interview.,

  • Well, Johnny Cash himself stated that he was on the session that afternoon. Apparently he was off-mike as in the start of "On The Jericho Road" you can hear Elvis mention him. Carl Perkins also stated that Johnny was there, even that they sang more songs like "Blueberry Hill" or "Isle of Golden Dreams" among others.

  • @gduwen Elvis said that Johnny Cash was needed to do this. If Johnny was there, which he was not, then why would he not just sing it. The ones in attendance called them the "Rover Boys Trio" on the session, and they were not "too far away" from the mic to be heard. Trio means three not four. Big E, Killer and Perkins were there but Cash was not in attendance.

  • @LT1HILLINGHOE Johnny Cash was there, there are apparently some lost songs from the session like i previously said, Blueberry Hill and Tutti Frutti. Cash himself stated in his autobiography that he was there and knowing the Cash way I tell you that he wasn't lying. Even Carl Perkins confirmed he was there.

  • @gduwen Cash was not on any of the session. Fact.

  • @LT1HILLINGHOE Ok, I tell you what I think at last is that he had been there, but out of some statements I have no other justification, but it's god enough for me. It will be an eternal discussion that only will end if someday somebody founds a lost tape.

  • @LT1HILLINGHOE Cash was there..what date do you have for the picure of all 4 of them.I have Tues Dec 4th 56.

  • @195477 Yeah, Cash was there earlier in the day, but not on any of the recordings. Just because there is a picture of them does not mean they are all on a recording together. LOL. I have pics of family members with country music stars taken together but there are no recordings of them singing together. Have a nice life.

  • @LT1HILLINGHOE ctd...way from the mic so you don't hear me so clear-but I was there."

These are the words of those who were there.

Now proove to me Cash WASN'T there.

You cannot argue the facts.....oh I am enjoying my life.

  • @LT1HILLINGHOE Lets look at the facts here.

Not you or I was there on the day.

These are the words of Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash.

Perkins." Johnny was there and I can remember him singing songs ike Blueberry hill,Isle of golden dreams,I won't hve to cross the Jordan alone,The old rugged cross,Tutti Frutti and Big Boss man."

Johnny Cash "Regardless of what anyone has said I WAS there the reasons I canot be heard much is that I had to sing in a higher key to blend in and I stood a ..ctd

  • @195477 If it makes u feel better to imagine things that aren't facts, then by all means...do that. No amount of words you type on YouTube will put Cash on the "Million Dollar Quartet." But I know, you gotta try, right? Have fun in ur imaginary world, and last but not least....have a nice life.

  • @LT1HILLINGHOE Then how come in 1972 Perkins even said that Cash was there?

  • @camarorider67 NO one said Cash wasn't there that day. The picture that was taken shows he was there.. When the session was recorded during the evening hours, Cash was not there. It's really not even an arguable point. Ask the Killer....he's still around.

  • @LT1HILLINGHOE You just said to 195477 that Cash was not there, you are contradicting your self. If Carl Perkins said he was there and singin' then he was there. If you listen to Farther Along and listen real close you can hear a voice singin in between Elvis and Perkins (It isn't Lewis because his voice is very standout from the group and he is singin the loudest)

  • @camarorider67 Do you even read the comments before you reply? Every now and then someone comes here and sends a clueless reply to my inbox about this. But, for the most part, they do at least read the comments and understand them before they bother. Good grief, go to Mississippi and ask the Killer how that day unfolded. Then all the replies that don't make any sense will stop. Have a nice life.

  • @LT1HILLINGHOE Then what are you arguing professor? Quit pussy-footin' around the facts. Perkins said Cash was there in 1972 and on Decemeber 3, 1956 (The day after this session) Elvis said Cash was there. And on Sept, 9 this year, the Killer himself did NOT deny that Cash was there.

  • @LT1HILLINGHOE Ok let look at the FACTS.

1.Johnny Cash himself said he was there and is on the tape.

2.A picture of him there was taken.

3.You still deny he was there.

4.We could argue till we are blue in the face but I believe J.C. before you.

  • @195477 Ummm....you can argue until you are blue in the face if you like. Go ahead because I really don't care what you write. I, on the other hand am not arguing, I am stating a fact. Cash was not there during the recording and it is a fact. Now you can argue until the blue shows in your face, because it doesn't change anything yesterday, today or tomorrow.

Have a nice life and watch out for the blue in your face.

  • @LT1HILLINGHOE I'm looking I don't see any blue..remember "Goodbye JOHNNY"...ADIOS.

  • @LT1HILLINGHOE No Elvis didn't say he needed Johnny Cash he said "Take on Johnny Cash to this" ..please try harder.

  • @195477 Dad burn it...I was going to try just a little to kinda even things up a bit, but as it turns out I don't need to, you are doing so much of it. And to top it all off, you are doing a fine job. Keep on trying while the ones who know will keep on knowing that Cash was not part of the quartet. In your world...maybe, but in the real world...naa. Although you will keep on replying with nonsense, this is the end of the conversation and the case is closed, Mr. YouTube Armchair Captain. LOL.

  • @LT1HILLINGHOE Mr.Elvis Presley fan club member for 30yrs would sound better but as you are nieve i'll forgive you.

The conversation is like this, 2 people who were there nearly 56 yrs ago say he sang..you say different so what you are saying is Cash[who says his voice is on the tapes} and Perkins are liars?

When you can proove them wrong i'll believe you...until then I know who I believe.

Son you have a lot to learn.

  • @195477 Even though you're probably right, it's hard to listen to someone who doesn't know how to spell "naive". I'm pretty sure you can't call a person a naive if you don't know how to spell it.

  • @ASelinger It's not my spelling it's my ability to type.

Sepilnlg si smoteinhg we era albe ot udnretsnad eevn wehn wirtetn wonrg...FCAT.

  • @195477 As long as the first and last letters are in its place, we are.

  • @gduwen Wlel dnoe.

  • Comment removed

  • @LT1HILLINGHOE We all have our opinions but can you proove Perkins and Cash wrong? ..no.

The fact is they were there we weren't as fans we can argue till the cows come home but at the end of the day they say yes and you cannot disproove this..that is a fact.

  • ifyou listen to other songs they did tht day you can hear his voice distinctly

  • johnny cash actually showed up like half way through it

  • Most my favorite singers one picture and one album. I love this album so much Iam going to wear out my ipod.

  • Real music. Thanks.

  • Is this on a cd?!?!

  • Yea, i took it from The Million Dollar Quartet session, you can found it on amazon or Ebay.

  • WHAT a great moment in music history! All southern boys ,destined to become stars, all of them! And just clowning around singing gospel!Priceless! Thx!

  • Actually they all were stars when this happened in December 1956. Jerry Lee already had minor hits and was just about to bust loose but Elvis was a monster hit maker then and Carl was wearing Blue Suede Shoes. This session is about an hour and they sung many different types of music. From their then current hits to gospel to bluegrass all in the Sun Studio that Elvis visited when he got back home from the road around Christmas on this session. It just happened and was not planned. Have fun.
