It's impossible to bring the companion cube with you... until you realize that you can shoots the walls in the hallway right before the elevator... I facepalmed when I figured that out after like 5 minutes of trying different things.

There's a portable wal next to the exit. You can make a portal there and go get the companion cube. You get a nice lol when you enter the elevator.
