A good indication that this was a GAG SHOW was that Paul Shaffer is the band leader on this episode. On the REAL MORNING SHOW that took place back in 1980, Paul Shaffer was not the band leader and was still on SNL at the time I believe. Plus, the end credits has the "Late Night" theme. The morning show in 1980 had some tacky theme music.
I have a VHS copy of The David Letterman Shows final broadcast from October 1980 in its entirety. Edwin Newman did news updates. IIRC, only a few of these shows were archived by NBC.
My best Dave moment was when he had Roseanne Arnold on the show. It was Valentines Day and he asked what she got for it. She said she got a box of chocolates and he said " you sure you really need those?"..lol
This IS a put-on. Dave never let NBC forget the many "embarrassments" they put him through, prior to "LATE NIGHT"- especially their "encouragement" of his 1980 daytime show. Hence, "the end of 'The Morning Show'"- Tawny Harper Reynolds is supposed to be his "Kathie Lee Gifford" here, as the real "MORNING SHOW", on WABC-TV in New York, then featured Regis Philbin and Kathie Lee as co-hosts {before it was syndicated nationally as "LIVE!" in 1988}.
NO! You're wrong. This was a show that Dave had on in the late 70's or early 80's. I think i was either in hs or college, so it's around there. The networks did not know what to do with him, so they put him on in the MORNING. Before he started his late night show. It lasted a summer, I believe.
No, this isn't Dave's morning show. It's a goof episode of Late Night. His morning show wasn't this surreal, and Paul was not involved. Plus, those are the Late Night credits and theme.
The morning show was on while I was in grad school in 1980 and it was tremendous. He used to needle NBC mercilessly, and I still remember his tour of the NBC Commissary. Comedy gold.
The strange thing about this particular show is that about a month before, I had written to Late Night, suggesting they do a morning show, since in those days I often taped the show and watched it during breakfast. So, imagine my reaction when I watched this show with that concept. Not saying Dave stole my idea. I'm just saying.
This was a goof done on on "Late Night with David Letterman" from the mid-late 80's on NBC and aired in its ususal time slot at 12:30am. Letterman DID briefly do a real morning show around 1980 though.
I'm sorry I may have made a mistake on the order of show conception. I never saw the Late show because I worked third shift and I thought his morning show was first. Sorry about that.
David Letterman had the morning show before he had Late night. His humor was too off the wall for the people watching in the morning and it bombed. So he moved to Late night, not the other way around. I watched that show in the morning because I worked third shift, and was sad to see it go. I was wondering if anyone has the video of Steve Martin's visit on the morning show when he came out in his bed???
If I recall, the joke was that so many people were taping "Late Night" and watching it in the at breakfast that Dave decided to do a morning show. Of course, it aired at 12:30 a.m.
Mmmmmm........is Tawny Harper Reynolds the REAL name of the woman playing the part of the 'overly-perky' co-host ???
Though I'm guessing it's not, she's still pretty damn cute.......

Didn't the new set of Late Night with David Letterman arrive after this show? On the show before this one, Bryant Gumbel spraypainted the desk.

Because his show was on so late, Dave said that he did this for people who used to tape it and then watch in the morning.

Tawny Harper Reynolds also played Dave's wife in the Letterman Family Christmas special he did. Those were terrific.

Seeing as how it has the copyright at the end saying 1985...yeah, i guess it would be '85 then..lol
Aenema28 2 years ago
NO, they might have the copyright until 1985, but Dave was already doing late night in 1985. It was earlier.
