  • a mind is like a Parachute, if it s not open it s not gonna work

    F.zappa

that movie was a brillant achievement, a true poesy and a massive visual art.

  • the Movie Southland Tales is requesting one thing...Open mind

mind is like a parachute, if it s not open it s not working (F.zappa)

but for sure you dumbs who didn t understood the movie you might find your...happines with Roland Emmerich movies!!!!

  • It doesn't matter whether it's a good or bad movie. If you attempt to compromise a group of people's collaborative investments and hard work trying to bring a new story to the screen by boo-ing, you are an arrogant fuckhead.

  • This movie though I understand why many people wouldn't enjoy it, is much more understood if you read the graphic novels that explain greatly the holes that are misunderstood (or not understood at all) in the film. Also for those that don't get the overall meaning, most of it has to do with the apocalyptic world (as much of it uses symbolism from Revelations in the bible), not being very religious I referred to a helpful explanation at IMDB.com, I enjoyed the film though IMO.

  • FUCKING WORST MOVIE EVER, DONT BELEIVE ME, BY NOW HOW MUCH DID IT GROSS, NOTHING , NOT A CENT, CAUSE EVEN NOW ITS STILL HORRIBLE.

  • yeah, these people look thrilled... how would you react if you were forced to watch cinematic diarrhea and then caught on camera?

  • The movie was wet sh*+ and these people are applauding to be polite. One of the most astoundingly terrible pieces of garbage ever committed to film. I dare you to watch it.

  • Worst piece of shit film I have ever seen. I would have preferred to invite door knocking Mormons into my house.

  • personnaly, i loved the movie

    well thought and clever

  • I agree, it was very well done

  • it should have been booed

  • this movie blew nutsack

  • this film went on forever, biggest bunch of senseless mess since neon genesis

  • 40 seconds of random, out of context clapping does not prove anything, moron.

  • @jeremydean Well this is actually backed up by kelly's own version of events. He claims that it got applause at the initial screening and that the negative reaction was not until the later press screening

  • this is just the presentation - where's the actual press screening reaction?

  • Richard Kelly=great director.

  • Quite possibly the worst movie ever. If you think it's deep, what do you normally watch? It wasn't deep at all- it was stupid.

  • Its a complicated satire of the world and politics today, it's not supposed to be deep.

  • this is the official presentation. the boos where at the press screening.

  • Yeah, 40 seconds of polite claps is proof. Come on. No tally of how many were there, and not even a minute of footage.

  • If it's released in the theaters it is "in the mainstream" - whoever chooses to watch it (the more the merrier in the studios eyes) makes or breaks that success. Why throw in hot-off-the-press actors like The Rock, Sean William Scott, Sarah Michelle Gellar, etc. if not trying to reach a bigger audience? That's why it is a mainstream film that boldly tried something new. I think everyone would agree.

  • dude marilyn manson ans dita were there

  • it was embarrassing...

    and yes, some people booed

  • I watched this film and i dont believe that any one with half a brain would boo it, the way the story is told and the way it all unfolds is amazingly well done

people in this day and age though just dont get films like this

  • get films like this?

Please, refrain from being snarky one second more. This film was poorly conceived as it stemmed from a creative director with no concept as to how to shape it into a cohesive frame for traditional film making. It tried so hard to be everything at once that it became a sick, demented version of a film that's not really confusing as it is pointless at times and missing the mark in many, many areas. Don't blame audiences. Blame a director that couldn't shape a vision.

  • That is exactly my point: this is NOT a traditional film! In my opinion I thought it was a well made film that didn't become, as you put it 'a sick demented version of a film' but rather an interesting and different way of telling a story

I work in a cinema and have done for 2 years now and before that I studied media and film studies which gives me a pretty good idea of todays general audience and this isn't the typical mainstream movie

  • xander260 - no one's knocking your credentials - but the fact is - this movie was cut down considerably (nearly an hour) after Cannes. So, "thepaxromana" has a good point when talking about the director not shaping the film properly for a mainstream audience - even from conception.

  • This film was never intended for a mainstream audience though. If it was then yes, fair enough, I'd be agreeing with you but the simple fact is that it isn't mainstream, was never intended to be mainstream and never will be mainstream

• I think what xander is trying to say is that it was not intended for the majority. The people who could give a rats ass if the world around them is coming apart. It was made for the investigative types, the types that can see the way this movie relates to reality and not the types that just live in their perfect little world and everything's sunshine and rainbows. There are many problems today that influence our very lives just as shown in the movie. but are unknown because people dont care!

  • yep...this movie is i feel scarily close to what is actually starting to happen it sux cuz its like i luv it and its good to know somebody feels what i do but it sux cuz id rather be nuts and paranoide then on to something if that makes any sense...also the big actors didnt sign on because kelly wanted it mainstream they signed on because they loved darko and wanted to work with him. anyone in doubt u-tube interview w/ smg and the rock they say so.

  • It was actually cut down 20 minutes, which I would like to see. I heard GARRAFALO'S part was cut out, and people said she was cool in it. I hope a DIRECTOR'S CUT comes out soon. I still think its pretty good, but sloppy.

  • donnie darko also had about an hour cut out, which is wierd because donnie darko and donnie darko the directors cut are like two different films, i guess what im tryin to say is it doesnt matter if an hour was cut out because donnie darko was still awsome an i think southland tales was nearly p to that standerd

  • is the directors cut of darko really cool i havent seen it. i loved darko could you just rent it like anywhere? this movie is my current fav i think it was pretty damn good! glad kellys makin more movies!

  • donnie darko directors cut = donnie darko + deleted scenes from the donnie darko dvd and a few other short ones + annoying demystification + a different song at the beginning + crazy, unnecessary special effects at the end that sort of ruin the experience - that stupid "come here" thing the liquid arrow does when it wants Donnie to go upstairs and get the gun. I prefer the original.

  • If it's released in the theaters it is "in the mainstream" - whoever chooses to watch it (the more the merrier in the studios eyes) makes or breaks that success. • no ones gonna boo dwayne johnson havent you seen punked hahaha

  • This really proves nothing; the applause is weak at best, and you can tell that many people walked out. In Cannes, if you don't like a movie, you just walk out, not stay until the end and boo. So, sure, the people who remained didn't boo, but that's one empty theatre they're in.

  • It proves that there wasn't deafening boos, doesn't it?

  • How can you tell that many people walked out, don't talk bollocks

  • How can you tell that many people walked out, don't talk bollocks

  • Why did Roger Ebert say there were "deafening boos" ?

  • He hated the movie so he most likely made that up, or because he had such seething hate for the film only heard the boos at the end

  • I heard the boos came while the film was still rolling.

  • Is it just me or is that Mayrlin Manson on the right clapping?

  • Yup, he was a fan of Darko back before mentioning Darko became just a way for guys to hit on goth chicks.

Heh, works extremely well, though XD

  • They're clapping slowly cuz they're probably freaked out by it, just like I was when I finished watching Donnie Darko, I can't wait for this movie!

  • this movie looks sweet

  • Cant wait to see Southland Tales i love SMG!!

  • Not that I think I'm hot shit or anything but I did extra work for this movie and from what I saw it looks totally weird. But I loved Donnie Darko and plan on seeing this one. When does the real trailer come out??

  • if you look at IMDB one of the sites listed has the trailer on it, and this movie looks like one to watch whilst clean and sober kiddies!!

  • Fuck that! I'm showin up high anyway!

  • it's going to be like donnie darko - you either hate it or love it. you either think it's a train wreck or a spectacular mindf*ck. darko didn't do well commercially and neither will southland, but i still plan to see it.

  • you do notice the empty seats right? the ones who hated it probably ran over to there type writers

  • some were disappointed, some were totally amazed. I was totally amazed in the end. Its a really really strange movie and it's quite normal that opinions are so different.

  • The Rock looks really thin!!!

Well, not that thin. But when you realise that THAT IS THE ROCK it's like, FUCKING HELL!!

  • yes its gonna be hard for the rock to appear thin

  • Yes but he's looking good. Doesn't have to be so "beefy".

  • OMG! Marylin Manson!

  • critics are losers anyway. Cant wait to see this movie.

  • critics lie

  • they may have been clapping in front of em all, but when got in front of their typewriters it was a different story!
