  • mayonnaise monkees

  • The lyrics to this song were read out in church at a friends funeral in 1992 when we were still school kids.

Not a dry eye in the house. RIP Danny.

  • @smokeycheech was he from new cross?

  • those guys are still out their playing, making great music, just not together...

  • Great band! Quality lyrics

If anyone wants to listen to a new hip-hop/punk band from b'ham please check my vids of CHimps In sUIts

  • far right?!!!! early 90's mass immagration didnt start til late 90's, carter rock!!! at least fro most of world anyhow

  • Good song, but I have to say the lack of seeing Black and Asian faces in the video makes me feel very uncomfortable. Were they a far-right band?

  • @doodydude234 What a stupid comment, and I'm positive that every black, south asian, east asian and black african friend that I've got would agree with me. What do you mean by asian? South Asian, East Asian, South East Asian. They're very different. I'm sure you've said that in good faith, but does being petty really help things?

  • @doodydude234 stupid fool. you dont just stick asian and black faces in stuff for the sake of it!! you sound like the racist to me!!!

  • Wow, hairs on the back of my neck... The early nineties at Brixton Academy, Blade and Mega City 4 on the support bill, you fat bastard, insane mosh pit, stupid fringe, crowd surfing... All hail Jim Bob and Fruit Bat.

  • What a fuckin tune!!!

  • wow! I used to dance like hell to this song!!!! great memories, thanks a lot! :-)

  • Brilliant song, one of the best of the nineties (and ever, I think), the band is very British and very brilliant. Play it loud and sing along.

  • Also worth reading Jim Bob's book, cunningly entitled 'goodnight jim bob'.

Thanks for that I will try and find it.

This is one of the more iconic songs of the early 90s I think. Stayed on my playlist anyway.

  • 101 damnations was prob my first album-i asked for it for christmas and got it off my nan -now that's rock'n'roll

  • Fun times, but I'm sure it had something to do with being carefree and 18 yrs old too. Can't say these two put out timeless music though. Was a fun time though.

    Cheers.

  • tune

  • Oh i remember them : they were like "punk" Pet Shop Boys. And i remember their funny rhymes : "the grebos, the crusties and the goths / and the only living boy in New Cross". Those were the times, No internet and John Major as PM..... . So British they were..

  • legends!

  • Lovin it.

  • FRUITBAT !!!!

  • Hi. You like Carter. This is good. I have a challenge. Pick up a guitar/piano/banjo/spoon & play. Record yourself playing a song that you have never played before. A new composition. Play back the recording & sing along straight away. Don't write anything down just make up the melody & words as you go along. Then take one hour to edit/make video/cry. Then upload your song & link to my page. I have started you off. If I can do it anybody can. I used 3 chords & my broken old voice. Let's create.X

  • have you ? its youtube mate

  • i will join in with the age thing too, im 37 and educating my kids with this as well as sheltered life, the taking of peckham, fat man ect. mr jim bob you have a way with words, sir.

  • Ah, good times. Saw 'em in New York during the CMJ New Music festival. Awesome show! Of course this was before Times Square became a Disney theme park, so just being in NY was amazing. Ahhh. So wish I could have made it to the UK to see them in 2009!

  • im 41 in April and still listening to Carter!!! ive taken good care of the CD's, god knows how!!!

  • I'm thirty-five tomorrow, and I used to play Sheriff Fatman and all that when I was young. Has someone been mucking about with the nature of causality again? Own up.

  • My girlfriend told me to take her down where it smells, so I drove her to New Cross.

  • im 30 on tuesday (26th) but my mum used to play sherrif fatman an all that when i was young and i still think its quality

  • i havnt heard this in years ... propper wicked stuff !! top liryks !!

  • no-one appeciates you older fans, but I do...

  • used to love these guys, class tunes...shame they went underground after beating up pip scofeild live on stage lol, mind you its a great way to go out....

  • @tottymansing I dont think you've made it until you've rugby tackled Schofield live on telly.

  • when i used to go to see this lot play in the early 90s. we all used to chant,, you fat bastard.. you fat bastard... now allot of us are in our 40s we are those fat bastards

  • hahahaha, although I prefer the word 'portly' ,

    but still very true.

  • @skawashers LOL - yeh know what ya mean , but the good thing is we're all still doing it :))

Never mind the "fat , 40 , and back" tour . We're just embarking on our next tour of " nearly 50 and fooked " haha . (keep on jumpin' about) :))

  • @skawashers Yep, the muscles gave up and waved a little white flag :-)

  • wow. superb. what a blast of nostalgia! cheers!!!

  • @Indiekid1997 Thats coz you are just a kid!!! not lived enough, wasn't there and prob never will be!

  • I i have music taste

  • self praise is no reccomendation!

  • Those were the days

  • yes the unstoppable machine I witnessed at the Lemon Grove Exeter ----superb !

  • I think part of Carter's appeal is that the two of them look like they could be in The Bash Street Kids.

  • Saw them in Adelaide in 93. 2 guys and drumbeats on a tape. They really know how to play live. Was not the best visual show, but the music was spot on

  • thats because you were 5 years away from being on the tit when this song came out...now go and listen to your jonas brothers cds

  • jesus i was 17 when i last saw these play...

  • dragonfitter - they set Brixton alight tonight as well. They still have what it takes and then some :o)

  • saw them play last night they were great

  • what a fucking banging tune top,top band

  • Hello, Good evening, Welcome

    and Goodbye .........

  • I was on holidays in the States in 1994. Flew to England to see them play at Canterbury Uni. Then saw them a few weeks later in Bristol - best concert of my life. I have just heard that they have reformed for a few concerts. Would be prepared to cross the world to see them again and catch up with some of my european friends who are also carter tragics - working on it

  • ill see you at the gig on the 13th then me and my brother are going ill be the fat bloke jumping around like an idiot

  • I saw CARTER with "these animal men" supporting at LEEDS uni, quality :)

  • I smell (or hope for) an Emo revial of Carter!

  • Good old Jim Bob, used to see him downing a pint in Cherry Trees back in the day !

  • Crystal Palace fans.

USM would nip on the train to Norwood Junction before their fame came, to see the Palace.

  • One of the defining songs of my youth

  • i came across the cd of a bunch i borrowed of someone yesterday , i copied them , end this is the first time i must have heard this track in the last 15 year , right now i've got a tear in my eye .

  • QUALITY!!!

  • YEEEEEESSSSS

It's your first pills at an indie disco track!

  • muy buenos!!!

  • Not really popular in Spain, but i always loved it

17 years later still sounds great!!!!

  • Dated, yes. But it's still pretty cool. I had this record... I haven't heard this song in years.

  • God damned!!! I had totally forgotten how fucking GREAT this band was!!! This song is AMAZING!!! Hands down!!!!

  • This is arguably the greatest song I've heart in years.

    I'm not exaggerating.

  • awesome band, awesome song

  • Carter USM. Possibly the best band in the world...ever. Bring on November!

  • Absolutely. Best band of the 90s by far!!!!

  • Jeez...that was 1992?..scarey...brilliant song though!!

  • love this song as much now as i did in 92!

  • the comfort and the joy on feeling lost

  • One of the most under rated bands of all times,

meaningfull lyrics unlike the mass produced drivvel that fills the charts nowadays........

Come back Jim Bob an Fruitbat

  • the comfort and the joy on feeling lost

with the only living boy in newcross

    love this song

    brixton 08

never stop doing the j1 year tour

    theres still another fans =]

best night of my life brixton 08

    never forget carter

    too good to forget =]x

  • Good and oddly poignant song, despite the roll-call of middle class English names in it.

  • whats up with you sweaty?

  • Couple of ugly *uggers.

  • you can keep your x factor crap this is where its at .... tremendous!!! thanks for posting .Happy New Year to all.

  • What a cracking track

  • In 1991 when I just started senior school my mate gave me a tape he had recorded. On one side was Nevermind by Nirvana and on the other side was 101 Damnations by Carter. I now only own Nevermind on CD by Nirvana, but I own every album I have managed to lay my hands on by Carter including BBC sessions and live albums etc - simply quality.

  • I have a ticket for Birmingham tonite - cant make it so if anyone can collect in bristol then its theirs. mail me

  • Lowe played it on the radio today 18/11/08

  • Next Saturday XD Live!!

=P Last gig's last year.? Didn't go as planned just turned old enough too go see them! Can't wait!

  • In Spain this song is totally unknown, as well as Carter. Anyway I can perfectly remember this song on the radio in 1992. It's amazing. Great song!

  • I can imagine that they didn't travel well

  • The entire lyrics of Carter's first five albums are indelibly printed on my brain. Poetry. Now I'm a 30something, and Carter are still THE class act by a country mile

  • Wer and still are the kings of music...thanks for putting them here :@)

  • he looks like tim roth at the start!

  • lEt'S hEaR iT fOr ThE gReBoEs, tHe CrUsTiEs AnD tHe GoThS......

  • The 1st gig I ever went to. Aston Villa leisure centre, think it was Nov 92? Great gig. I love this band.

  • Maybe I am the only Italian girl who loves them... Anyway I adore this song!!!

  • The good the bad the average and the unique. Marvellous.

  • Good old days...still love them.... :)

  • Me, too.

"The comfort and the joy of feeling lost" is such a brilliant line.

  • So many of their lines were brilliant - it's one of the things I loved about carter...how they managed to twist lines to sound familiar but mean something else.

  • Totally agree. Most of the bands today have more or less boring lyrics imho.

  • im the only living girl in new cross, hehe

  • Yes I've seen you outside Iceland

  • Carter were my 1st proper gig aged 14 and so will always have that very special place in my heart.. theres shit all around like carter now...fuck all the bands now are crap...its all lame radio friendly pap. give me carter, levellers, ozric, neds atomic dustbin and classic 60's/70's rock anyday over the shit that gets called groundbreaking or alternative today arctic monkeys--- Ive shit em

  • Damn right

  • unstobble be carter way got to love them the words amazing

  • What a tune. These guys ruled the 90s. Also worth reading Jim Bob's book, cunningly entitled 'goodnight jim bob'.

  • Yeah got that, it's a bloody great book.

  • the early 90's were bloody fantastic music wise.

  • Aye, great music in the early 90's. Along with Carter USM, there were The Wonderstuff, Neds, PWEI, Blur, Inspiral Carpets, Stone Roses, Happy Mondays and, for when I was grumpy, The Cure. And don't ever forget the genius of The La's. Happy, happy days.

  • grrrrreat band love it love it love it the 90:s were cool realy at least i had fun im sre i wasnt alone in thinkng that the 90'swas one of the best decades its just to soon for peiple to realise give it another 15 years and people will hark back to them with fond memories and the drugs were much better then aswell

  • bands just aren't cool like carter were cool. i don't even have any of their albums, but imagine not preening and posing, just writing some cool lyrics and loving what you do. and being genuine and using your brain as well as your feelings! no one does it any more. you USED TO BE SO LOVELY HUMAN RACE! ha ha

  • i met jimbob n co..

surprising they were boring and arrogant

    great song

  • so underrated it was unbelievable come back please!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • I was always a stuffies man

  • Man that was ace. Had a proper nostalgic moment there. I think I'm gunna have to go out and buy the old albums again .. Cheers :)

  • Prepared to take out a mortgage man, 30 Something still retails at £16 here.

  • Does anyone else hear the similarity between this and Depeche Mode's Just Can't Get Enough? Not a criticism, just a random call.

  • Yeh I do, it sounds like the synth intro from that song except the depeche song is more up and down in tone.

  • bollox, ( not a criticisism )

  • If I heard a similarity between music I don't mean to demean the Carter song, just pick up on what I think is a similarity between a tune. I really love this song by Carter USM (heard it on a compilation at work) so looked it up on here as soon as I got back.

  • Fucking brilliant!! I'm currently buying all their albums in a retrophase!! This was probably the best song of their 'Love' album....Ah fuck it, they were all brilliant!!

  • dunt 4get ENGLAND now that was a tune i loved that 1 but i agree this 1 is ace as were all of em x

  • New Cross Rules ~~

  • went to see him play a gig in a pub for old times sakes it was the dogs bollocks he sat in the pub and just played whatever people asked him to...fucking ace

  • wow that made my year!

    its been too long

  • Ah groovy! One of the most underrated bands of all time in my book. Takes me back to some happier days in my life despite all the dark lyrics :)

  • at the bic sam?

  • Don't think so, it was up North, we drove from Liverpool. It was probably in Manchester or Leeds or somewhere like that. I kept the ticket stub cos I got them to sign it since the oportunity for a keepsake was right in front of me lol! I think I have the signed ticket in a diary somewhere.

  • Just checked-it was at Guild Hall in Preston, 6th October 1993, signed by Fruitbat and jim Bob :)

  • I went to a Carter gig with sultans of ping supporting on the eve of my 18th birthday, saw my birthday in backstage with them. They look younger on this video than I remember them seeming then! I guess I just got a lot older lol. Great band :)

  • Brilliant. Takes me way back too. The opening bit reminds me of my schooldays. These are the songs, man. These are the songs.

  • Carter were the shit. this takes me back.

  • What can u say... . this is music at its best!!!!

  • i read recently the carter were crap.

    this aint crap.

    wonderful stuff.

  • Didn't read that in NME did you?? They've got it in for anyone that isn't 'cool'. Or whatever the in thing is at the time anyway.

  • no, mr splatter, it was the guardian or somewhere. it was about how carter didn't inspire anyone. or someting like that, i couldn't be arsed to read the whole article.

well done, by the way, for putting this stuff up.

  • That's retarded, most Greebo bands looked up to them and Pop Will Eat Itself looked to them for their name, if I'm not mistaken.

  • This guys rulz!

  • put a tear in my eye :)

  • the first band i seen play live

    happy days

  • I saw them headline the saturday neet at Glastonbury in about '92. It was one of the best gigs i ever saw. They died out quickly though and disapeared. I spent 8 years in New Cross. It's a shithole but i had some great days there. Usually paraletic.

  • This is brilliant, brings back great memories. Didn't know it was about AIDS. I loved their performance on the Smash Hits Poll Winners Party, I had it on VHS and used to drive my parents crazy playing it back all of the time.

  • dose anybody know when 1992 the love album was released ?

  • The beginning of May of said year if i remember correctly?

No, wait you were trying to be funny?

  • Havent seen the video either. Watched them live in Athens in 1994. Awesome. YOU FAT BASTARD!!!!

  • Wow, haven't heard the song in a long time and had never seen the video. I was lucky enough however to see CTUSM live in Philadelphia many years ago and they were great, as well as the crowd who really got into the performance.

  • I know, it has contact information about the terrence higgins trust on the CD single.

  • how many know this song is bout aids ?

  • so good so far...

  • "the good, the bad, the average - and the unique"

Wish i could see them live...

  • You can mate, they're playing Birmingham and London in November.

  • they are a great band. loved their music, havent heard in while.

seeing this vid again i can see where harry enfield got his inspiration for 'kevin and perry' lol

  • OMFG i miss the early 90's

  • got to seem here in LA....fantastic

  • hi splattermania ave u by any chance got England xxx

  • long long time no hear. can anyone remember the song that starts with "both my arms and legs are torn to shreds, my eyes are tired and grey...."

  • 'G.I. Blues' from the '101 Damnations' Album.

  • if only they were back in the limelight

  • Genius lyrics.

  • Amazing song, excellent band!

Shed a tear when they played their last song at the final gig in Brixton on Friday :-(

  • You fat bastards :o) !

Definitely britains most underestimated band ever! Great to hear they're back. I bought almost all of their albums since I heard "After the watershed" on MTV back in 1991.

  • when schofield got 'fruitbattered'

  • Fucking Amazing. Who's seeing them in Brixton on November 2nd?

  • me! see ya there!

  • Saw them last night and they were absolutely fantastic. I am covered in bruises but well worth it. Can't beat a Carter gig. x
