I wonder if Bach's music would have been different if he had been a "non-believer".
I assume inspiration can stem from many sides and thus wouldn't have affected his music. Virtue and humbleness were not invented by religion, but rather existed alongside of it.
"Soli Deo Gloria."-J.S. Bach. A genius, inspired by God. Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, Telemann, Mozart, Beethoven, Wagner, Tchaikovsky, Verdi, Rameau and other composers of the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical & Romantic periods wrote beautiful music, because GOD inspired them, and they used their gifts for good. Centuries later, their music is still being played. We need never let this music to fade away. It soothes the soul, and inspires the spirit.
would you mind keeping this religious thing away from music? Bach didn't need god for writing his music, only talent and a lot of transpiration. please do enjoy the music though!
I don't mean to sound rude, but what you just said is blasphemy. God is the inspiration behind every good work. Mozart's middle name "Amadeus" means Beloved Of God. Bach himself said that music should be used to glorify our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Haha, it's funny how you want religion away from BACH's music, especially this piece which is called "Zion is calling" and towards the end where in c-minor they chorus is begging for "hosanna". 90% of of Bach's music is rooted in religion and he would often write on his manuscript: "for the glory of God". You may be right for other composers but trust me not for Bach.
Hi One cannot deny (I don't even try to) that Bach's music has to do a lot with religion but my point was: I love Bach's music for his music in se, not for the cultural and religious base. When listening to the Art of the fugue, or an orchestral suite, or a partita, or a church cantata, or name it whatever, I'm not thinking of god, but of wonderful music. And the same accounts for Perotinus, Palestrina, Monteverdi, Schütz and so many others. Best regards Pierre
Bach was actually said to be a deeply religious man and thought of God in everything he did with his music. In fact, he signed every one of his manuscripts 'SDG' for Soli Deo Gloria : To the glory of God alone. To ask one to keep religion out of Bach's music is to make it devoid of its very inspiration and purpose.
It's a lost cause, buddy. Secularists are always going to get shouted at no matter what we say. Kick back, enjoy it, and let them go needlessly berzerk.
Concerning comments regarding tempo: When I play music, I frequently enjoy to do so quickly; but when I _listen_ to music, I often enjoy it best at a considerably slower tempo. Something that people don't seem to realize is that when one plays they are doing so for the stimulation of their fingers and mind as well as their ears. If for the right reasons, I believe both the fast and slow performance of music to be forgivable. It's not easy to choose tempo for the many others as the one self.
That is a weird comment. But I can see your point. But maybe the organist IS just playing for himself. In any case, I like this version above others. Like the tuning, love the playing. Es macht viel spass aus.
Forget those selfprocaimed experts with their Post-Romantic views. You put in what a lot of musicians tend to miss, A constant tempo!! Bach is all about a strong constant tempo, miss that and it ain't Bach.
Frankly, Bach sounds best when played mechanically--the whole point of Baroque composition is to put emotion into the notes themselves, not the manner in which they are played.
this is not true. Though I DO appreciate this comment. Emotion is definitely put into the notes, but they can also be played emotionally. About this video, I think it is interpreted well. (not great, but good)
"dude don't listen to any of these people who are complaining that the piece sounds mechanical. " Agreed! Besides centuries later no one will perform THEIR compositions mechanical or not. I enjoy the interpretation. Carry on.
dextra + sinistra 8' .............. it is to fast, i don't hear vocals in this organ. It has to be music, this is so unnatural....... and motoric..... sorry... Wachet auf has to give an important message. And it don't comes out now.....
Ah, What can I say? A 22 year old "expert" opinion! Well I like this performance. More please. ps. It may be the American way of expression. However I find the choice of language NAFF.

@silverbud Didn't Bach have 20 odd children of whom only a few survived to adulthood. How would anyone cope with that nowadays?

Hi,
You are not being rude, and I didn't mean to be rude neither, I just felt we just should enjoy this music and nothing more or less.
What you say about Mozart and Bach is true (and I knew that very well already), but that doesn't change my point.
Best Regards
Pierre

Tempo: in my view, a prelude should indicate the tempo at which the following choral (or hymn) is to be sung! This interpretation does this very well.
When you look at the words, a slow tempo would be completely inappropriate.
