  • This song is sooo beautiful to me on so many levels! I was pregnant with a son I was told I would never have stomach big as the moon and I realized how bright his light was shining even in me. It was my lullaby to my son from the moment he made himself known to me. He is Samuel (meaning I asked God for a son) and he is so bright I truely am grateful to reflect his light and hold him in my life for as long as God allows!

  • .....i miss you..

  • I love it:))

  • this song just keeps me smilin:-)

  • @kathascheuringer : It keeps me smiling too my friend. :-)

  • dis BE like my closing prayer 4 da nite!!

  • Also at the BEGINNING of the song, WHO was outcast?? Shunned?? Kicked out... Changed by MAN'S word, and turned opposite of truth, per translation and LIES.. Erykah is speaking the truth.. "Selah"... Peace..

  • HE saw his reflection in me, and he smiled at me.. (WHOSE reflection are we really made of or created of?? From when do we really come) This song is really DEEP, and she is trying to say much to us, however HAS to do it from a spiritual real. It isn't about religion anymore, go deeper.

  • A sense of me finds it rewarding to see this song being discussed, however a sense of me becomes angered in such ignorant dissertations that I have read regarding this song.. This is a spiritual spirit filled song.. Many nights, he was alone - he light was too light.. so they turned away.. and he stood alone, EVERY night and EVERY DAY.. (Who is the Light Bearer)? (Who was created as claimed as the SUN" *SON* Who is the SUN god? So many things have been twisted, stolen and lied to us about..

  • I LOVE This sonq, i would just like to have a nice respectable time with this playinq in the backqround over a candle lit dinner in the moon light . :D

  • She clearly says How good God is! How Good He is! Reflecting the light of The Son? Cmon!! The very message is about God. Couple That with "Drama" From Baduizm and ...oh well u can make up ur own mind. God Bless us all!!!

  • This is so pretty!!!!! Thanks Pandora!!!!

  • OMG!!!

  • SOOOO RELAXING!!!!!

  • Love that picture.

  • i was in 10th grade in HIGH SCHOOL, just being mesmerized by this album. Loved the feeling this song gave me; crickets, Erykah's poetry, all of it. Stay creative Erykah.

  • @jamaldavid good lookin out David I thought i would never get a reply back with tht question.lol.

  • we need more music like this and less bafoonery

  • Sad that urban radio never put this into rotation.

  • 9 PEOPLE DONT UNDERSTAND ITS OKAY!!!

  • YES, THAT ENERGY FROM HER SUN ... THEY DIDN'T UNDERSTAND HIM... SO THEY TURNED AWAY... THE ENERY FROM HER SUN MADE HER SHINE BRIGHTER... KNOWLEDGE IS THE FOUNDATION OF ALL EXISTENCE.. WISDOM IS SECONDARY BUT MOST NECESSARY... YOU NEED KNOWLEDGE TO HAVE WISDOM...

  • @foundsgtal HIS KNOWLEDGE WAS SO STONG...

  • I absolutely love this song. It is the BEST song Ms. Badu ever done.

  • So much love from THE LOVE BELOW from the wonderful city of Greenville S.C.!

  • this song is so smooth, you fall deeper and deeper in love with erykah badu i wish more people had this talent but this is what makes her a queen !!

  • I am the reflection of you, your mirrored image.. We are one!

  • My favorite Badu song...loves it!!!

  • I reflect the light of my sun! Yes the woman is the reflection of the man. Sun, moon, and stars!!!

  • I feel every line of this song right now... <3

  • Another CKB treatment special! This is a song about me and my son's dad.

  • Amen! This song is so beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • all time favorite

  • This is one of my favorites because she's talking about her relationship w/ her mate. She is an orange moon because she's a reflection of him(SUN). GOD is good because he made her a reflection of her mate, being grateful of GOD.

  • Having a bad day, but this song speaks to my soul and lifts my spiritis!! How good He truly is....

  • This song was off her 2nd album. Her first child, a son named Puma was born after her first album came out. The father was Andre 3000 of Outkast. Her and Andre had already split up when this song was written. THIS SONG IS OBVIOUSLY WRITTEN ABOUT THE LOVE SHE HAS FOR HER SON. This album "Mama's Gun" was the first chance she had to release a song about her child. She sings about the joy she is filled with the first time her son smiled at her and how good it is to be loved by her son.

  • @cleanrug Puma is her second child which is a girl 1st child is her son Seven and her youngest is a girl Moon

  • @cleanrug Puma is her second child which is a girl 1st child is her son Seven and her youngest is a girl Mars

  • Ok, i guess based on the top 2 comments, I gotta say that ..... This song is about an orange moon. lol.

  • EN FRANCE ON A PAS D4ARTISTE COMME SA DOMMAGE....

  • She says, "How God is!"

  • @atlsun77 she says "how God he is"

  • Orange is said to be Buddha's favorite color. It is the color of enlightenment...

  • I LOVE How this is being discussed so many years later. Its one of her talents. this song is so deep.. Like if you are reading this in 2020.. :)

  • This is one of the most beautiful songs that she made hands down. I believe that every1's belief of what the song means is correct. I believe its based on what you see and how you see it.

  • @vaughnl0v3 It's true that art will always be interpreted differently by different people, but the artist very rarely creates it with the intention that it be taken however by whomever. I think we're trying to guess at Badu's inspiration. Doesn't mean anyone's personal interpretation is wrong *for them*, but it's kinda cool to know the artist's intent.

  • Some on here seem to be disregarding the fact that as spiritual as Badu is, she's not religious. This song is love overflowing. Haven't you heard the Badu lyric "I used to pray to God above, but now I'm filled with so much love"? So it makes sense that the song is about love (and the lyrics scream man/woman love), and that love is the "god" she refers to.

  • I believe this song is about soulmates.

  • no this song is for mother and son if not o well great son and i sing it to my son everynite

  • @Nsimone5980 you are absolutely correct!

  • "How good it is...HOW GOOOOD it is......" I'm Brighter than Before

  • nonsense.

  • <3

  • I believe there is no right or wrong answer both comments are deep and the way you view this tune! music is a universal language!! and you get what you get from a song

but this song will soon be a classic people sleep on this

  • @funnyface35 I agree with you. In a sense the two are one in the same . There are many instances in the bible where Jesus and His church are compared to a bride and groom. She could have been talking about both.

  • very soothing song

  • Classic.

  • i interpret this and relate to this as relationship between mother and son.

  • my little 5 year old cousin says "how rudy is"(thats my nickname) and it is so cute the way he says it and he sings and i spin him around and dance with him..... i love him so much

  • Thank God for sending us Erykah Badu, she inspires!

  • she's like "plant your seed on me, we'll let it grow."

  • love it

  • .... nice song relaxin one love

  • I love this track Now THIS is Music. I wish she would produce more of this Jazz GENRE. I am of the old school classics. , i.e. Grover Washington Jr., Miles, George Benson, Mongo Santa Maria to name a few. I love that Jazz THANG.

  • whenever this comes on it is taboo to change it

  • I love this song <3

  • it's such a nocturnal (nighttime) calm relaxing, love song to just wind down to. if u listen @ the lyrics carefully, badu tells the story of a good man (the Sun) searching for his mate with unsuccessful results until he finds her (the Moon)...notice when it first comes on, u hear all the nighttime sounds like crickets, nightowls in the background. But @ the end, you hear all morning (daytime) sounds like early birds chirping/meaning the sun can now shine his brightest b/c he's found his moon

  • @preciouspearl1908 the ankh... the fusion of male and female energy... the wholesomeness of oneness... i agree w/u sis! :) pleasantly sound

  • @TheAhsemik yessss....i like the "scientific" word fusion you used to describe the poetic union Erykah sings about. thank u bruh!

  • orange kush listenning 2 orange moon

  • @MsAprilsandoval I sang this as a lullaby to my son in the womb and out it is a beautiful song......

  • What album is this??

  • This is a CLASSIC!..#pointblankperiod

  • If anything Erykah influenced Amy Winehouse. But two souls connected.

  • Comment removed

  • @pinKstarzx I love Amy Winehouse however she did not influence this. Erykah made this in 2001 and all of her music sounds very soulful like this. She probably influenced Amy if anything.

  • @TheLboogie31 I love people who know. I think Amy wrote on one of her cds in regards to being influenced by Erykah. At the moment I am mourning Amy. Came across all Amy's influences, in order that I may get a glimpse of her foundation.

  • @pinKstarzx STOP DRINKING CLOROX BLEACH...She's INFLUENCED by the TRUE original SOUL sounds of the U.S.A, and BADU was OUT first! 1997 Baduizm!

  • I love this song.

  • @fade.... Well, I think it's about God upon the completion of all His creation w/ the jewel that is MAN (both man and wo-man or man w/ a wowmb) and He said that it was "....very good!" Gen 2

  • scary pic. no lie!

  • Meaning of this song? Does anyone know it? It's only one! Email me if you know!

  • I guess like with a beautiful painting , . . we all have an interpretation of our own - and with this song they are all so Sweet !

    -=-

Next see my soing Jesus plus the captures in it - Thanks a lot

    and THUMB if you can

  • Aaaargh I LOVE this song!!!!! <3

  • i love dis song. it's exactly wat my soul is screaming.

  • amadooo y relax (L)

  • to A.W. open NYC

  • @fmcbride82580 I AGREE!

  • "...then he turned to me, he saw his reflection."

  • Umm..this song is the relationship between her and God/Jesus....Jesus being the son of God and Jesus really being God incarnate...... she sings of his lonely days in the desert, resisting temptation from the devil..40 days and 40 nights. How we are all made in his Image.. (reflecting the light of the son)&( he saw his reflection in me) and how she accepted him into her world and how grateful she is that she knows the love of God

  • @fmcbride82580 Ri-damn-diculous! Love how Christians twist everything to fit their worldview.

  • @lyricalkismet wow, didn't know I had that many comments or upvotes, but sweetie, I'm probably the last person someone would call a Christian. If I were one I wouldn't be ashamed to say that I am, but I am not...not in the least. I was just giving an interpretation of what I think it means and how I see it...key word : "I", not Christians, Muslims, Atheists, Catholics, Pagans, Jews, etc etc....

  • @fmcbride82580 Sorry my comment directed at you was so hostile and assumptive. I'm all for people having their own interpretations of what it means to them, but I get frustrated seeing people apply those interpretations universally to something created by an artists who has been vocal about the fact that her beliefs don't necessarily match up to those being ascribed to her. That shouldn't take away from what it means to you, though. Again, sorry.

  • @lyricalkismet Wow it takes a big person to say you were wrong for your approach and to apologize very refreshing on such a beautiful song!

  • @lyricalkismet ..I am not a fan of organized religion...never have been, but I am a spiritual person and I believe in God..........(Jesus, Buddha, Muhammed), whom ever God sent to convey his/her message of love and acceptance. I've studied religions and have seen how they have been used to control this world so with that being said...I'm a lover, not a fighter. =0) Bless!!!!

  • @fmcbride82580 Erykah is gopher vagina deep.

  • Nation of Gods and Earths got good knowledge with multiple layers of meaning. Erykah has excelled at creating palatable music that reflect their knowledge.

  • DAMN YOU DEEP @fade2blakqueen I LIKED YOUR INTERPRETATION

  • @MsCorrupt1 thank you

  • Lets all go out to a resturant eat a great dinner, drink fine wine and smoke some good weed.. Together we vibe

  • @bahamaboy25 Good Times!

  • maaan, I geett high for this music

  • many many nights

  • there's an orange moon tonight, over MN..

  • @donluchitti Fu*ckin A**... you are ignorant... A woman's cycle is controlled by the Moon. As is the Tide...the Sea. Get knowledge.... it might help you yet.... Ohhh wait... you're ignorant!!!

  • @darqueve1 U insulting troglodyte, tide is only partially controlled by the moon.. That right there should blow ur mind youngblood; To realize that things may exist coincidentally sometimes is true knowledge. If all women were linked to the lunar cycles (which is only a couple days off of the time it takes to complete an estrous cycle) then all women would experience the period at once. Also, humans are the only mammal to do it monthly, why aren't there more? It's biology.

  • Protons Electrons Always Cause Explosions unto you Queen/Earth/Moon.

  • Very jazzy-like. Wow, this is like... it's...you know.... like.... emm....when.... ok.... uh... a....ssssxxx... ggg... ohmm... AAAAHH !!! I can't find one word to describe the feeling I got for those 7:13 of my life.... A pure bliss.

  • wow fade 2 black thanks for the interpretaion

  • I love the ambiance of night in the beginning and then the sounds of EARLY morning at the end where birds can be heard. The beginning of a new day. Beautiful song and meaning.

  • Just love this song.

  • Genesis..."And it was good.."

    His creation was good...

  • happy badu birthday! :P nice mellow song to make ya mornin' cause i'm cleva

  • Mama's Gun is a CLASSIC!! Love this song!

  • This song can be interpreted so many ways. I've always thought of it as the relationship between God and his people.

  • this song is the relationship between Man and woman Many nights he stands alone refers to the lone man seeking a worthy woman but being that he is so full of "light" that no other woman found was worthy nor was he comprehended by them in their ignorance they "turned away" loosely they couldn't handle the truth in him. SO, being that woman's menstral cycle is controlled by the phases of the moon we know that her being orange is full of "light" from her SUN ( man) he has poured into her. his LOVE

  • @fade2blakqueen1 knowledge is power. peace soul*

  • @fade2blakqueen1 Preach!

  • @fade2blakqueen1 speaking of truth, and the beauty of truth, the menstrual cycle is not controlled by the moon. but go ahead anyways ;)

  • @fade2blakqueen1 thats so unbelievable.. i just started listening to Eryka and this is my favorite song. im very spiritual and into the cycles of the moon and angels. This song inspired me with someone...that I feel very strongly about. Thank you for this cuas eI always tell him Im his Orange moon shining on his Apple Tree...

  • @fade2blakqueen1 sorry...I like how talk of a womans period but then you really lose me with the other stuff. Are you a woman? Some igs wont ever get this..... i love you Lillian Margaret Young! Happy 21st bvirthday you sweet child regflectinbgt yht light of the sun

  • @fade2blakqueen1 Wow...Can i pay you to break down the other meanings of things in daily life? you completely broke that down to the bare ESSENCE!! LOL!!! MAYBE you can help me understand this thing we call LIFE!!

  • @fade2blakqueen1 tell them sista!

  • @fade2blakqueen1 daaaam.... u must be awake....

  • @fade2blakqueen1 I don't mean any DISRESPECT but.... What the fu*k does having your period have to do with anything in regards to you comment or this Song??? Yeah....Women bleed....so what??? What point are you tryin to get across ??? :/

  • @fade2blakqueen1 Wrong........ this song is about the relationship between God and man...... Many nights he was alone is referring to God and he made us and said it is good..... it is about the true first relationship we were made in God's image the sun we are orange moons reflection the light of God....Ijs

  • @TonyaStigall i don't think either of you are wrong because there are many ways to view or take in one thing especially with good music. You have to be open to experiencing it as with any art form. That's the beauty of it there is no such thing as right and wrong just different pieces of a great whole

  • @TonyaStigall beautiful! didn't think of it this way

  • @fade2blakqueen1 wow...that was deep!!

  • my interpretation, my beautiful son: ....i praise the day, he turned my way....and smiled at me....now i shine so brightly :)
