  • thanks man good vid

  • Great job, thanks for sharing!

  • thanks for the video ! please post more regarding v star how to's ! thanks !

  • Thanks for the great video. FYI - Pg 8-2 of the owners manual says:

    Quantity (Oil)

Without oil filter element replacement 2.8 US Quarts

With oil filter element replacement 3.0 US Quarts

Total amount (dry engine) 3.4 US Quarts

  • How do you get the bike up on blocks like that?

  • Just bought myself an 04 v star 650. Only has 5k miles on it. With this video even my wife could change the oil. Not that I'd let her go near my bike with a wrench. Thanks buddy.

  • Thanks, very useful video. Any more tips on vstar 650?

  • thank you.

  • Great video I'm 18 and I'm about to buy my first bike and it's a 1998 yamaha vstar 650 custom :) since I'm pretty mechanically inclined I'm sure I'll never have to pay anyone to change my oil for me and your vid helped thanks alot :) and sweet music dude gata love maiden

  • Great vid. Bought a 650 with 10k miles on it, paid $80 for an oil change (Ridenow Powersports) and don't want to do that again. What did you use for a center stand? and how do you get it on there? I've got a buddy's rear tire stand but it doesn't work on my bike.

  • thanks i would be doing the oil change my self

  • Thanks so much! That was simple. quick and explained well.

  • Thanksvfor the video...great vid..

  • thank you for taking the time to do this very helpful video. I have been taking my 650 v star to the dealership because they told me the exhaust would have to be removed. Will be doing it myself from now on.

  • Thank you very much for taking the time to do make this video. You really helped a new V Star 650 owner.

  • Just finished changing the oil on mine. I am sure I just saved quite a bit money doing it myself.Thank you for making this video.

  • Showing the direction of how to loosen the drain bolt would have been good

  • @imeqsmd righty tighty lefty loosy

Refers to threads on a screw, nut, bolt, etc. To tighten, you turn to the right (clockwise). To loosen, you turn toward the left (counter clockwise). A few exceptions exist, notably old propane cylinders and some pipe fittings.

  • Thanks Miko, the video was very helpful.

  • Thanks for the video! Very helpful!

  • Good job . . It helped me a lot :)

  • Thank you Miko for the video it help me so much. But i have problem to take out the nut because of the difficult space to place the 17"close wrench

  • well I found out myself that you dudes need to spring for a 950...lol, mine has an outside oil filter just like a car, easy to get to and pretty easy to change the oil. So unless you like the 650, move on up to a 950....

  • Thanks dude, this was a quality video, thanks for the time to do this. I do have a question, I have a 09 V Star 950 is this about the same way to change the oil in it?

I have a bad back, is this something I could do or have it done in your opinion. Again thanks for taking the time to post this, very helpful.

  • This video is ridiculously helpful. Thank you so much for taking your time to make this and post it.

  • the bike being level is always confusing--does that mean with someone holding it off of the kickstand? mine is a vstar 2010 1300 but your info will help alot--i dont see one for mine. the same 650 is what i traded in... excellent calm and not rushed hd video thanks--

  • This was very helpful and very well done. Thanks.

  • could you post a video or explain how to check the final drive oil in a 650

  • Thank you. The video was very helpful to me.

  • I have a couple of mods on my bike that made the oil change a little more difficult than the one in the video. First, I have the J-slam which lowers the bike about 4" at the rear fender. Because of this, I couldn't get leverage to remove the drain plug or get my pan (which is like the one in the video) under the bike. I had to lift the rear a bit with a jack to get under there.

  • i totally agree. my bike calls for 2.96 quarts which is 94.7 ounces, since there is 96 ounces to 3 quarts the difference is 1.3 ounces, even less for you. there is no way that could be harmful especially considering the residual oil left over in the containers.

love the foil idea, i suggest placing it there before running the engine, i burnt myself, haha.

  • sir, do you know the part numbers for the o-ring kit, and drain plug gasket? I bought a filter already (K&N 145; looks right)

  • Thx a lot for the how to vid... Very well done and much appreciated that you took the time to make this.

  • Just purchase a V-star 650 and I am trying to get familiar with it. Your video sure did wonders for my confidence in doing it my self specially with the tough economic times... Thank you... Very helpful information

  • Mobil makes Walmarts oil "SuperTech" brand, they're the same oil. You can save ALLOT of money by using the Walmart brand.

  • Very helpful

  • The oil level should be half way up the glass when the bike is level it's about 2 3/4 quarts for the 650 with a filter change. As for the wet clutch, the engine oil and transmission oil are the same, you change the oil you are changing both. Don't use standard motor oil it will ruin your clutch, you should only use oil made for bikes.

  • thanks for the tutoral. I just bought one last fall and am getting ready to do my first oil change. where on the glass is the level supposed to be?

Also, is the engine and transmission oil the same on this bike? I have read about this bike having a "wet clutch" whatever that means

  • Whats up party people, this is my first post ever!! I would have to say that this is a good video. I liked the foil tip good advice. I went to the auto parts store and they tried to give me a wix oil filter number 24935 in the video they have the same filter but number 24936. Does anybody know if mine will work? I have a 2000 650 v star custom.

  • Thanks so much Miko!

  • Thanks for sharing this! You did a great job! Enjoy your riding season as well!

  • thanks for the info great vid

  • On the 650 you don't have to remove the exhaust. The 1100 is the model you have to remove the exhaust to do an oil change on.

  • i was told the exhaust had to come off but i didnt see you do that. did i miss it or was i told wrong?

  • After a few comments I ended up taking out about 8oz of oil and the oil level was half way up the glass. So it looks like 2 3/4 qts of oil is the correct amount.
