OH crap i think i just invented the process that may make sanctian computers. Error engine. We already know today if you make a system big enough and complex enough it will create unexpected random corruption on it self. Imagine using that randomization to help computer make descisions. Scary.
@shawoody He mentioned jazz, which simplifies the origins but is close to correct. He never denies the African-American influence (which was primary but not exclusive)
@wildsnydon If you're talking about the very beginning i think it's just the mix being changed by the sound man rather than Jojo doing anything. There are clips on youtube though of him changing the pitch and resonance of the bass drum by pressing the toe of his left foot on the bass drum head while playing it with the right foot
@alastairerrett ... jojo has spoken about how he considers his sound man one of the participating musicians ... from what i understand , at this point , jojo has given his sound man carte blanche to do what he wants during performances
@sweetfly66 Yeah Roli Mossiman is a massive part of their live performance. However i'm guessing that he isn't with Jojo for this particular performance. There is other part during the performance where his drums are being manipulated by the soundman. Normally in a nerve live performance Roli would add lots of stuff on the fly. I don't hear any of that hear
Who would have ever thought a bunch of sample and drum machine music coming out of the British underground rave scene would lead to one of the most significant developments in drum sound and technique in the past decade?
what he does at 12:45 + is probably one of the best things i've ever seen in my life... and i've probably already seen thousands of the finest drum videos there are
interesting when he said about how at the onset of machines and industry was also about the time of the emergence of drums as a central figure in music. interesting because when i hear machines running i listen for the pulse and different rhythmic patterns and how those patterns can be built upon and modulated in different ways. very cool correlation he presented.
What a great modern influence he is, really revived drumming for me. Especially in a time when the fusion and progressive rock styles were all performed similarly by the usual suspects. I remember thinking the same that when I heard NIN Pretty hate machine my career as a drummer was ruined, yet I mimicked the drum machine anyway and now 20 years later Mayer is fusing some of the coolest sounds and techniques I've ever heard. Brilliant work!! :) I'll be a fan for years to come! :)
i like how he talked about God without saying the name/word....the O and 1, simply Perfect... cause he is in TED (Technology Entertainment and Design) and you know Science don´t get along with religion and faith, but as a lover of Science the more i know the more i Believe in God...Excellent video, ty @alastairerrett
@andydrummergb The brush solo is in the other video called 'Encore' But by all means go and watch it on TED and support them as a thank you for putting on great talks
@FrankTdrumz Sorry about that mate, The audio wasn't that loud on the stream and it did boost it a bit before uploading to try and help. comes out plenty loud enough on my laptop though which is why I left it
@alastairerrett Ah no problem, I'll check it out later with my headphones on. Thanks for sharing, very insightful, Jojo is a great speaker and one of the finest drummers out there.
Just a note: this is a recording of the livestream. TEDxZurich will still release the full quality video after post-production is finished, hopefully in the next week.
yes thanks for the upload. I love when this happens - merging of 2 things i do that was always seperated in my head - drumming videos on youtube and watching ted talks. Mind blown.
It annoys me a little that he plays with his traditional hand backwards. He loses the tiniest bit of articulation, but I still notice it and I'm like GAH! SOMETHING'S WRONG! hahahaha. Other than me being OCD about hand technique, this was awesome. Thanks for the upload.
@fallingfromjupiter In my oppinion - he has started to flip the stick backwards in his left hand mainly because of that custom cymbal hoop on his secondarry snare which lowers the volume, also it just produces a fatter sound and that secondarry snare has to sound nasty! For delicate d'n'b grooves etc he still plays with the stick in is normal position. Nothing wrong with his hand technique! It's just a different sound, that's all!
@Bluums Actually, that makes perfect sense. I can't believe I never thought of that. I follow everything Jojo Mayer religiously, and it still never occurred to me. It still gets me a little when I see it, but I have no problem with it, I'm just really weird about hand technique. But thanks for explaining that, mate! Now I can rest a little easier. hahahaha
@fallingfromjupiter All you people can do is just blablabla.... Start practicing, work hard and you'll obtain great hand technique some day. Jojo is my favourite drummer, but there's no reason to mystify his technique.
4:59 <- need this to replay and figure out the sticking.

THAT'S TOO EPIC!!!

Maybe a stupid question. But what is the beat, he plays at 5:00? Is that Rock'n'Roll or what exactly? Can someone even name a song-example? Thx..
milifinaboy 3 weeks ago
@milifinaboy It's the beat from "Sing, Sing, Sing," made famous by Gene Krupa in Benny Goodman's Band. /watch?v=E_gW0VHBbSA
