WIKIPEDIA..The song was written by Linda Laurie, a sometime recording artist best known for the 1959 novelty record "Ambrose Part 5" Laurie moved into songwriting, Returning in the summer of 1973 cutting "Leave Me Alone (Ruby Red Dress)" for MCA Records; the song was expediently shopped to Helen Reddy who recorded it for her album released August 1973 from which the track was issued as a single that October (Laurie was reportedly still doing promo for her own version at the start of the month).
Linda's recording career was 1958 to 1964. After moving to California Linda became more a songwriter for other singers and writing for television (the Meow Mix song is hers by the way). Helen Reddy had her hit with this record in 1973 so no way anyone would play this on the radio when everyone was familiar with Helen's version. Helen did I AM WOMAN in 1970 so she was at the top of her career.
I know why Ruby says: "God leave me alone" 2:00 3:09

Oh, I havn't known this was the original version. Even I havn't know Ms.Linda Laurie.
I was too small to know this beautifull young lady that time. It's too bad to know she past away recently......

Nice version. But I'm a little biased towards Helen Reddy's version.

I totally agree. Helen Reddy was the queen in the 70s with that smooth voice and great music.
