This style will look waayyy messier if you have layers, particularly short layers or angled layers to frame your face. Little peices of hair will stick out of the braid and will make the bun look messy.

Have you ever put your hair up in a pencil? My hair is about as long as your hair and all you need to do is shape your hair like a pony tail (dont tie it with anything), twist is tightly and stick the pencil through sort of as if you were sowing. You just need to make sure that the some of the pencil goes through the hair closest to your scalp.
