Good info, just one note: More solder is not always better. What is more important is that the surface is free of any oxides and you get the surface hot enough to get a good bond. For example I would just dab some flux on the connecter and heat it to clean the surface. Then you want to tin the connector and your wires. What this does is it gets a bond of solder on both pieces. Now you just hook your wire onto the connector and apply heat and a bit of solder if necessary to complete the bond.

fake... why your mp3 player saying "updating" ? i have tried too upgrade my mp3 player (unsuccsesful because i used a softarefrom another version of mp3 player, my bad) and makes same thing like yours , ( with no cable connected and sayes, charging :P sorry for my bad english

@4dy4dy The MP3 player works fine, and the charger I made works as well. As for the "Updating" message that was displayed, who knows, maybe I needed to up the voltage (different battery); this video was more to show how to make the "adapter" cord than it was to push for the use of that certain battery I used. BTW, your English is pretty good, assuming that it's not your first language.

Also while you may be saving time burning the tips of your wires your also diminishing the tensile strength of the wires themselves making them more fragile and susceptible to breakage.

HalfBreedMix The wires are braided with foil as a shielding from other electrical interfierance such as ESD, an electrostatic discharge. That braided wire is usually connected to the outer shell of the usb connector and any other device that has a metallic connector, which is ultimately grounded.

Also I've found, being a network tech terminating hundreds of wires a day, using your teeth to pinch the outer shell of the smaller internal wires and pulling works much faster.
