It'd certainly be nice to see all this if and when it's finished.
By the way, you might want to consider retrofitting the remaining engine room to appear as if it's functioning as well, with the pressure gauges displaying their correct operating pressures, steam effects, etc. It's already been done once for the original Poseidon Adventure.
Im soooo glad that a commitee is going to redo the boiler room's and the engine room's so that people will be able to see again what it was like when it was running and be able to see all the machinery as it was in her heyday.
The musem is a shadow of what ot was. They have realy dismantled the tour and most of the interesting spaces are now used for Halloween, which must generate mroe income. I wonder what happened to the Sterling Silver duck press which was just one priceless object in the many unique displays?
i hope the Queen Mary sails again i wish they would make a pattition to restore th e wonder of the queen mary again some one schold make a patition it wold be butifull to see the ship sail again. make the petition
It's a nice idea, but her engines are gutted, she is filled with thousands of tons of mud, and she has been proclaimed as a building in the city of Long Beach, making her illegal to move.
I visited the QM in 2003, fulfilling a long held dream of mine, the closest I came to her before was putting together a jigsaw puzzle of the great ship at my granny's, I guess it would have dated from the 30s but I was only a kid in the 80s when I became spellbound with this magical vessel. I applaud any effort to prolong and increase her interest and think it is a credit to the USA that they have cared so well for this beauty, for so long. This from an interested Scot.
@scoterpool We love her here in Southern California. I live less than 10 minutes from her =-)
She is iconic, and draws thousands everyday. I occasionally visit her for lunch, and a good read on one of her many deck stretch-chairs and pass the day in marvel that I'm on board such a vessel with her rich history. Imagine, so many famous people, and troops walked the very same decks. I don't know much of her original design, but am just grateful she's still with us as one of the last great liners.
What a wonderful project! So many times I dream on her decks about the golden age of the ocean liners. She's so beautiful, please let her sail again. Will that ever be possible or is it too late to restore everything?
Tragic that the original boilers and engines were removed in the first place. How much actually remains of the interior? Were the cabins stripped out? Sad what happened to the ship, but we must be grateful that it was preserved in the first place.
Unfortunately, the 2nd and 3rd class accomodations and some of the public rooms from those classes were either gutted or sacraficed for other uses (such as the 3rd Class dining room, which is now all but destroyed due to its current use as table storage.)
It is sad that preservation was not on the agenda in 1968, but we can appreciate the fact that she IS still with us today.
It will be interesting to see how Dubai treats the QE2 as far as preservation goes. Only time will tell.
this to me is monumental.i've stayed there twice, and plan to more.i've seen the places not open to the public, and yes, she is very neglected.only the spots that take your money are in ok condition.
Nobody will step up to the plate to do anything with her.Just look at the SS France,United States,Independence, and other grand old liners that are totally neglected. I think that the Queen Mary even exists is a wonderful wonderful thing, but our culture does not seem to value things like this. Bad TV, Walmart, having the latest cellphone on the block strikes more of a chord with the general public than engineering marvels, objects of cultural or historical significance.
The USA government and Britains government should contribute to making the Queen mary seaworthy again.that way people all over the world could enjoy seeing the ship as it tours ports all around the world as a floating hotel/learning center etc. it could for instance spend 3/4 mnths in each port .
The odds of it sinking are too great to allow it to sail again. Look up past antique liners and read about their fates (you could review the histories of the individual ships here on wikipedia - search for "cunard line"). It would also deteriorate faster at sea and be more likely to end up in a scrap yard. This ship is too great and rare a treasure to risk and needs to be restored and protected.
Exactly. Ships on the sea have short lives ... rust eats them away, even docked. Many floating museums need re-plating to prevent their sinking ... even battleships. (Nobly, the US still has as museums 6 or 7 of the ten battleships built for WWII, and a few of the refurbished WWI ones too). Canada's museum destroyer "Haida" has been replated and relocated, despite its fresh water environment. A refitted QM could never meet modern standards, anyway, and is no doubt hopelessly weakened.
When she was retired in long beach, all of her propulsion system were removed. This greatly decreased her discplacement (meaning much lighter) to compensate and make her stable, he hull was filled with cement. For this reason and also due to condition of her sale from Cunard, she can never be seaworthy again.
Nice video. I actually have 8mm footage of the Queen coming into Long Beach taken by my grandfather. Hopefully someone takes notice that she's neglected and steps up to restore her.
Slowly-moving liners leave no wake. Even at moderate speed (say 12 knots), a ship like the QM would hardly affect boats around it. I had a passenger liner pass me into Montreal last summer, very close, and there was very little wave action from it. Of course, at 30 knots it would be a different story!

I like how you tied the "Raise the Titanic" soundtrack with the concept of "Raising the Queen Mary Legacy" over all, very nice job!
