ANYONE who says they would ""smack"" a woman ......with one sentence is speaking volumes about their "religion" and their ""attitude"" people who even make threats like that should be put behind bars plain and simple DESPICABLE !!!
This song reminds me of the YT video "The man who planted trees parts 1-3" but with a family and the bond of a loving couple. May this song live on through the ages and the message it sings.
Can we stop arguing about religion here, you guys? Listen to the lyrics of this beautiful song. I seriously doubt Enya meant for us to make this into a battle of beliefs. The words to the song aren't talking about whose god is better or anything like that. It is a song of peace and music, of memory and life. No matter how different we believe, we must accept that we all think this music is lovely and that we all bleed the same kind of blood and weep the same tears. Accept that, my friends. :)
Seeing as how you know zip about my god, my attitude on religion, my personal interpretations of the ethereal and the spiritual, you're really just talking out of your bum. :3
Every day I read the Bible and I can say that this song is built based on the Psalm, which speaks of the determination of God to save those who hope in Him, abiding in oppression at the hands of the enemies of God and his people. Who exactly is the enemy, one must read the Bible
Enya, I am sorely dissapointed in you. You butchered a church standard and pruned the God references from the song, as though God were an obcenity. If allusions to a god figure makes your skin crawl that much, than just leave songs about him/her alone and just stick to non-theistic stuff in the future.
@TheSteelyMan maybe you can sing better? feel free to try . as for smacking: if you're that frustrated just listen to something else. i can't believe this is hurting your "religious" feelings, you don't sound humble enough to be religious.
@TheSteelyMan your god IS an obscenity, a fake, fraud, and blood-thirsty murderer who stands by while "accidents" he knew would happen kill people while he stands twiddling his thumbs, with a "loving" god like that who needs enemies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I probably first heard the Enya version on a CD (not video), which I like...however in all fairness, if I were to hear a gospel version in a church it would be more to my liking than this OR the young high school students performing in small groups.
Part 4 Doris Plenn contributed the following verse around 1950, which was taken up by Pete Seeger and other folk revivalists: When tyrants tremble, sick with fear, And hear their death-knell ringing, When friends rejoice both far and near, How can I keep from singing? In prison cell and dungeon vile, Our thoughts to them go winging; When friends by shame are undefiled, How can I keep from singing?
Apparently 1st publication was 1868 entitled "Always Rejoicing" attributed to Pauline T. reads: Part 1: My life flows on in endless song: Above earth's lamentation, I catch the sweet, tho' far-off hymn That hails a new creation. Through all the tumult and the strife I hear the music ringing; It finds an echo in my soul-- How can I keep from singing?
I love this song, but the melody isn't the same as I heard years ago. I do prefer the other melody. I don't remember who recorded it, it was a group of people, but the words are the same... if someone knows who recoreded about 20 years ago, please let me know..K
In those overcast moments when I am uncertain as to our value, individually and as a species, this is one of the barest handful of things which can cut like a laser through my misanthropy and cynicism, reminding me palpably of the amazing potential of mankind to be, as Pratchett puts it, "the place where the falling angel meets the rising ape". Here is the former in full measure and o'erflowing.
"How Can I Keep From Singing?" (also known by its opening line "My Life Flows On in Endless Song") is a Christian hymn with music written by American Baptist minister Robert Wadsworth Lowry. The song is frequently, though erroneously, cited as a traditional Quaker hymn. The original composition has now entered into the public domain, and appears in several hymnals and song collections, both in its original form and with a revised text.
Well done! Yes, I love the harsh images there - that's what the song is all about - peace in the midst of a violent world. "No storm can shake my inmost calm, while to the Rock I'm clinging" Wow, what a great concept!
this straight away brings tears to my eyes i dont know why...it is exquisitely beautiful........and i truly love its feeling of almost deep prayer and being connected
am sending it back to u today just to let u know how much i dearly love this shared song......so touching so right for me just now..as tears just flow........
One thing people don't realize is that this was experienced by the author, not just an intellectual verse. He enjoyed this Transcendental Absolute Reality and then beautifully put his experience into words.
Scene 1:01-1:03 made me feel the same way about my babies, life, love, and everything that makes life worth living----as a crescendo of goosebumps rose from my shins to my shoulders! AMAZING!
A simply stunning voice with beautiful lyrics.........

Part 3
I lift my eyes; the cloud grows thin;
I see the blue above it;
And day by day this pathway smooths,
Since first I learned to love it.
The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart,
A fountain ever springing;
All things are mine since I am his--
How can I keep from singing?

Part 2
What tho' my joys and comfort die?
The Lord my Saviour liveth;
What tho' the darkness gather round?
Songs in the night he giveth.
No storm can shake my inmost calm,
While to that refuge clinging;
Since Christ is Lord of heaven and earth,
How can I keep from singing?
I

Where can I get a backing track of this ? Hasnt there been a new release of this song lately ?

Through Wikipedia you can see the original lyrics. In this version the lyrics which speak of Christ seem to be left out for the most part.

it's actually a Quaker song, a reflection of the 'strength through adversity' they had and have.
I'm not a Quaker (I'm Pagan) but I respect their commitment and passion for their Lord and his ways.
