That is a priceless bit of history. And as a laowai resident of Shenzhen, there are more shiny tall buildings but is anything really so different in 2009?
In Shenzhen, foreigner should take care yourself. They still have many hidden problems - Theft, pickpocket, robbery case like Vietnam. Recently, Two British Mens ask me to go the disco and walk around the street. As I saw, some stranger are folllow them. Be a sheep or be a hunter?
My dad and mom happens to know that this video was shot in the place now known as "Nan Tang", which is right between "Dong Men" and "Shen Nan Avenue". It was before the existence of Dong Men Market, and was demolished long ago - somewhere before the 90's, my dad says propably around 1985. Thanks for the great video.
Wow, that's right about where my apartment is now. All 40-story buildings, neon and chrome, with Mercedes and BMWs buzzing around (alongside the bicycles).
Is there any chance I can get a copy of this video? It's sad that I didn't have the chance to take photos or videos of the old city centre, before everything was knocked down. I'm going to show my mom and dad who should have an idea of where is this place in shenzhen.
Well I'm born and bred in Shenzhen, and I'm not able to name single spot in the video, I guess that's because I was born in 1983, and was too young to remember anything before the 90's. And strangly, I could not recongize the dialect. I guess that's because those were immigrants. But yea, the stuff there were selling, the building style, was good old shenzhen looking...
Amazing video! Thanks for posting MudElephant. I visted Shenzhen in April of this year, and I love this video. I will try to post some of what I shot soon, so check back later to see my videos! I enjoyed this very much. Shenzhen is still similar, but also very different, and your video helped me see what I tried to imagine. Thanks again! LJB
I love China....Looks like chaos but it is not. Too many people, too much noise, too great a disparity between rich and poor? Perhaps but EVERYTHING WORKS. There are few beggars or lay-abouts.. and in the markets astonishingly ALL THE FOOD IS FRESH!!(Even the fish). North America should pay attention!
I have no idea what district this would be - it was to the right of the area that the tourist busses stopped in. I have other video showing a dog being butchered on the sidewalk which I will digitize and post within 24 hours. Stay tuned. :-)
Interesting. I assume this was shot in Luohu district. By any chance would this be the Dongmen area? You are correct to state that Shenzhen is now large and modern, it has no rival in the USA as far as that is concerned. However there are places in the Baoan district that still look like the footage in your video.
you are naive to say such a thing. i am an architect, shenzhen, like many other cities in china, teh construction is low quality and very scary.
to me citeis in china, like shanghai, shenzhen, feel so souless.
but for now, while the building are all new, it is certainly very unique. too bad the buildings wont last for a long time like in the west, usa, japan etc.
hong kong and the pudong skyline i find impressive, hong kong more-so.
