  • A true legend, at one with his car.

  • Was that Manta a Group B spec ? it is so damn fast...

  • maybe-used when unsure of grip conditions, since it wad raining, there was no way to be sure

  • does he really say "maybe"? if so, what the hell is wrong with his roadbook??

  • Ari: What's the service in the village?

    Terry: 20 Errrr right... MAYBE?!

followed by 9 more maybes... damnn!

  • @utuberickvick Having been a navigator for many years my use maybe means that when the notes were made it was a certain speed or angle, but, when making the notes the car is traveling at a lot less speed and conditions only need to change slightly, at full speed, to make a big difference, so, when the driver hears 'maybe' he knows to make his own judgement. ( in a split second)

  • He's using that Manta like an extension of his own body. Truly amazing. :)

  • I love the comment "We have a bit of a puncture" at 1.53. Well does that slow Ari? not at all. still drives flat out.

  • I love rally drivers like this. Although they drive on streets these are not a bunch of street racers, they are proper race drivers that tackle any terrain anywhere day or night going flatout with unhuman car control. Amazing!!!

  • You may as well not have a co driver.. he doesnt seem to MAYBE know the way..

  • s#!t, d@mn, mother#%^&$#; unhuman skills

  • @efieszeta Normal flying Finn. :D

  • que bestiaaa!! lastima la musica de fondo

  • They drive through the mud, the gravel, on the asphalt, the impossible terrain, as fast as they can. They are the fastest, most experienced, with biggest heart when sit in the car! They are rally drivers!!!

  • Thats proper feerless shit right there....

  • when you get in a car with the ubermiester, god cant help you!

  • Makes Nascar drivers look like shit, NASCAR big deal

  • MAYBE?

  • long flat left maybe.. just maybe, possible right.. unsure..

  • We all heard the "dear god" , but Ari's response is hardly audible, and I wonder if he has not said "just read"... he gives me the creeps !

  • I reckon this is as big an "ohhh fuck" moment as Mark Higgins on Isle of Man!

  • Damn. What do you think his average and top speeds were? Looks like he hits 100mph at times, but I',m not good at judging speed, especially with how narrow that road is. And the numbers the codriver calls, do those stand for anything, like kmph, or are they just arbitrary to indicate how sharp a corner is?

  • @justforever96 The numbers indicate distance in metres to the corner, the "absolute" "flat" and "easy" indicate the severity of the turn, as this is a fairly straight stage the co-driver uses these notes the most, its a very simplified way of calling notes, most drivers nowadays use a number system, to call the severity of the corner also, eg "100 into 1 left" would be a very slight left hander at 100 mts, whereas "square (or 90) right" would be a very tight 90 degree right hander.

  • I`d say he judged his margin for error perfectly!

  • I would have filled my shorts there and then !

  • It looks absolutely insane if u don't get the pace note.

  • 240p, we meet again...

  • co-driver at 1min 40sec 'oooh...dear god' lololol

  • @jacobe888 hence the title?

  • @11BMWpower11

dunno lol, i didn't even read the title, just watched and reacted... all ok? :)

  • @jacobe888 lol dont worry man, great video anyway :)

  • i cried at 1:37

  • Anyone know the background music.???

  • i can understand this being 240p since its from 1983 but wtf are alot of the new videos ones like this? 20fuckin11! 720+ or gtfo

  • |When Terry says 'easy right'..one gets the feeling he really wants to say 'whoa..easy'

  • SPECTACULAR... great driver !!!

The speed he reaches is simply amazing ! :O

  • At 1:39 he has a bit of a moment!! The skill is like no other, there's no room for error. What a legend. 6 people are gay.

  • The co-driver must have even bigger balls - he has to completely rely on Ari's superhuman skills. I know I'm more scared when I'm riding shotgun than when I'm driving fast myself.

  • 20 easy right MAYBE? xD

  • No a very good image but impecable sound. The bit following 1.38 is one of the more incredibles pieces of onboard footage ever. What I lile the most is how, after that, the codriver keeps going and Vatanen keeps on pushing!

  • Thumbs up you you stoped breathing and then laughted!!!

  • Increible como salva esa curva!

  • Balls of steel

  • kickass man :D sweet driving

  • My respect! i would be probably knotted around that wall....even with quater of that speed...

  • Is it just me or at 1:49 Ari Vatanen is laughing?

  • @mabmax1 possbly he's telling "Keep reading" to Terry, or smth like that.

  • @mabmax1 hahahahaha i cant beleve !!! i watch this 10000000 times and now i hear it xD xD

  • @mabmax1 sounds creepy

  • MAYBE several voters would or could not ride this car to the finish...

  • 6 people have no balls, maybe!

  • He's saying "maybe" because when they did the recce (which is, running the track to make the pace notes) it was a flat right, but it might not be this time due to conditions that might have changed. Also, you shouldn't be amazed that Ari is driving so fast that he's saying "dear god", you should be amazed that he's able to pick up so fast and keep on with the pace notes even though Ari almost spun off.

  • ''dear god''

  • HOLY SHIT!

  • Comment removed

  • maybe could mean anything, but it more than likely means dampness on the surface

  • Ari Vatanen #1 For ever.!!!

  • We have a bit of a puncture..who cares....

  • Legend driver.

  • Put Loeb in this car on this road at this speed and watch it all come undone. basically the chassis, drivetrains and electronics on modern day cars are doing about 70 percent of what guys like ARi and Rohrl did with pure skill and reflexes alone.

WRC is now as boring to me as F1, in the conquest for technical perfection a new order of motorsports and in fact human "culture" altogether has emerged in which the spirit is mastered by and fitted to the machine.

  • @svdpsy Agreed, Senna in a 1400hp 1986 Lotus was where driving talent ended. Fucking 1400hp, 1986 dude. friggin '86.

  • @gold333 The 1986 lotus had nothing like 1400hp, and Senna came 4th that season with only 2 race wins....?

  • holy shit

  • dear God...well said !!! driving at this speed on those narrow roads with al those "maybe" pacenotes is pretty damn sick ! Ari must havv balls even resistent to fuckin' nuke strikes 'n' shit to have this pulled off.

    maximum respect !!!

  • Dear God! Maybe!

  • 0:42 maybe over jump? thats a fucking serious maybe!

  • I don't see any reason in not continuing racing theses things. Many of the parts of the cars could be remade using state-of-the-art composite materials, and that would drastically reduce the weight and improve safety. :/

  • flat out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Just incredible

  • wrc cars suck brink back these men and there cars

  • Jeez!. They were the golden days of rallying!. This Citroen & Subaru baloney just doesn't compare!. Ari was a genius in that Escort!.

  • @rathfolan Thats not an Escort, thats a Manta 400!

  • I am a biker, cars are boxes to me but this guy is GOD

  • @paramveer25 indeed. its fucking amazing how fast he drives in this freaking narrow road

  • But how did they fit his balls in the car?

  • I can tell its a car....

  • In Finland some of us still respect these good old guys. And don't even start me about Henri Toivonen, because he gave his life for the sport. Toivonen was the last B-class hero.

  • 3 ppl are too scared to watch ! ;)

  • Tight stage amazing driving and co-driving skills. These guys must've had to change their shorts after this stage

  • i would have shit myself

  • this is not lucky.. this is flying finn!

  • ale zapierdala

  • am i hearing it right or does the co-driver keep saying "maybe"? ;))

  • @dk86612 maybe

  • 1:38 Damn

  • Holy shit, whats his avg speed?

  • the BEST rally driver ever!!!

    miss the old days....

  • well saved ari

  • This is the fastest pixel i ever seen

  • Dear god and god damn.

  • now, the true hero here is the british co-driver, as he did not shit himself riding with a finnish driver ;)

  • full video /watch?v=iBRVbgkuG9I&feature=related

  • I'd like to see the current crop of WRC stars rock up to the Isle of Man and do that! I think they'd poo their pants :-) Damn good video. Total commitment. Love it.

  • ken who?

  • What does he mean by "maybe"?

  • @Tunerdude94 shortened version of jump maybe

  • @Tunerdude94 caution, take care, etc...

  • @TheIronTank that would make sense.

  • 240p maybe

  • dude is fucking rippin

  • @2WHITE22 Lol, in an arcade game, anyone is a fast driver. Play some proper rally simulator and come back with news.

  • @TiagoMorbusSa richard burns rally??? :D

  • @MrBanaanipommi Just rally, but RBR is pretty good too.

  • @2WHITE22 Well (in Finland) my relative is married to a girl who drives beyond crazy! She was 18, when driving Fiat Ducato diesel van on very difficult gravelroad so fast, that one rally amateur couldn't follow up with Fiat Tipo 1.6 TC :D

  • looks scary

  • All you tough drivers driving with one hand... you see who drives with two? The masters of its kind :D

  • Is he saying "Maybe" after turn descriptions??? Why?

  • @chisel954 It's an intermediate stage between the turn level and the next one. Say fast right maybe would be between fast right and easy right.

  • @chisel954 My guess is it's his way of saying ''about, half'' or some other type of word.

  • @chisel954 The word "maybe" in the pacenotes indicates that the crew has not been able to accurately determine which pacenote they want to use for the corner, either because the corner is somehow special in shape or because of inadequate recce time.

So, basically the word "maybe" tells the driver that the given note does not perfectly describe the corner for one reason or another. This allows the driver to select a speed and a line that leaves a little more margin for error.

  • @TOIJALANABC That what I was gonna ask. Thanks!

  • @TOIJALANABC There seem to be a lot more of those in this video than I've heard in any other onboard rallying video. As someone who knows very little about the technicalities of rallying, I'm wondering if there is a reason for this? Is the Isle of Man course unusual in some way?

  • @TOIJALANABC after seen the vid i don't really see the margin for error, i can see that it's impossible to go faster in this road

  • @nawari123456 That's what another Finnish rally driver Juha Kankkunen answered when a reporter asked him how come the three fastest drivers on a stage had exactly the same time:

"Well, you see, it's impossible to drive that stage any faster."

  • @nawari123456 The quality of this copy which has obviously been transferred off a VHS TV-recording makes evaluating the margin for error impossible. And it is possible to go faster, Henri Toivonen (R.I.P) actually won the 1983 Manx driving the same car. One way to go faster is by managing to exit the corner on the edge of instead of slipping beyond it and not having to regain. Toivonen could've become an equal or even bigger legend than Vatanen.

  • @metonAlternate Toivonen was as fast and talented as anyone I've ever seen. Most people haven't even heard of him because of his untimely death.

  • @chisel954 He's not sure :)

  • @chisel954 "maybe" means almost flat out, absolute means foot to the floor n hang on!!

  • @chisel954 I think it has to do if he could cut the corner or not and in this case it might have to do with the speed at that point.

1:39 You just DONT want to go out of that cliff att xxx miles/h..

  • @chisel954 Read TheMightyAntar answer to ow1ShinoXr at the same question in this video: watch?v=UXV3sEH7PU0

  • @chisel954

So the driver can recognize that the surface on that corner may not have as much traction as he thinks and to be prepared to go less trottle ;)

  • @chisel954: He is giving him speeds to take the turns, I assume when he's saying "Maybe" he means they haven't taken the turns that fast in practice yet, but are guessing they can...

  • @chisel954: He is giving him speeds to take the turns, I assume when he's saying "Maybe" he means they haven't taken the turns that fast in practice yet, but are guessing they can...

... yes rallying is that badass.

  • @chisel954 After he says "flat", it means he is saying he can go flat out on the throttle, that means that the co pilot is not sure what difficulty the next turn has, because he doesn't know how fast they are going. Hence "easy left maybe", it can be easy of they are at 170 Km/h, but it might be different at 210...

  • @chisel954 He´s saying it because it´s a possibility

  • @chisel954 because he's not sure if he will survive the next one.

  • @chisel954 He doesent know if it really is going to turn

  • @chisel954 cuase they only have like one lap or something to write pace notes and they're not going full speed when they do this... so not every note is definite or will be completely accurate for when they are going full blast through the course

  • look very close and listen..he clips the wall it pused the car wide then over steers..pretty cool driving ide love to get in it with him

  • I think I drive fast down the back roads around here, I don't actually after seeing this. Then again I don't have a car like that either.

  • Not only do I not know how they drive so fast...But how do they even understand the co-driver. I was trying to figure out from watching the video and listening to the co-driver, but I just couldn't puzzle it out!!

  • @SimmJimm They are codes that are determined before hand by both the driver and codriver. for some, they just put numbers 1-5 with 5 being 'go fast through this turn' and 1 being 'slow' , but every duo is different.

  • 3 people threw up lunch

  • dislikers are clicked on wrong clip -.-'

  • that was insanen that guy is the man

  • Talent beyond my wildest dreams!

  • HE DRIVES THE REST OF THE STAGE WITH A FLAT TYER BRILLANT ?

  • @mantadave why do you think he had a flat tyre?

  • @codenamecordon It could be because the co-pilot says "we have a bit of a puncture" 1:54.

  • @rainbowbirko87 okay, it sure sounds like it, but how the hell would he know that? maybe he said something else, that just sounded like ''we have a bit of a puncture''?

  • Me and me mates had manta 400 reps in the 80s we would watch manta magic and get the cars out put a £5 in with a few slags and drive around like this till 6 in the morning thinking we were ari vatanen and i moan when i see speed camers every were now in wigan ? ha ha happy days mantas rule

  • It makes it even more insane that when he nearly lost it. A fence comes into view 1:41 and he luckily by chance or amazing reflexes just misses it> split second decission :L

  • Thats not a fence mate, that`s a steel cattle grid!,clips stone wall gets out of shape sideways through cattle grid then says "Sorry Terry", ARI THE LEGEND!!!

  • dear god haha

  • good god thats insane

  • agree.. F1 is show, this is real driving

  • That's the closest I care to get to the real thing. F-ing INSANE!!!!

  • Dear God... i shit my pants!!

  • Nice driving but I think you should learn to shift.

  • @fochesato85 cause your better than Vatanen? keep dreaming...

  • All I watched were those tree trunks going by aka the equivalent of instant death. These guys are nuts.

  • @illicitstill oh good point, like 5 trees per second. Instead of FPS it is Deaths Per Sec. 5 DPS !!!

  • i would not be a co-pilot! btw... the new dirt 3 looks boring now.

  • this is just brilliant rally cars these days drive them selves

  • get well soon!

  • Ari is a legend and will be one of the best drivers forever

  • "ohh , dear God" - imagine there if we would't act with cool what would have happened ? A normal driver would pannic ; Ari just leted the car slide a little a made just a small correction anticipanting that the car will recover by itself...

  • they just dont rally like this anymore. tooo many drivers are like "what if" now.

  • Harryman (co driver) probably shit his pants when Ari nearly lost control.....but then again thats Ari and he never loses, control except for that accident in Argentina :S

  • insane :d

  • The excitement of a roller coaster ride can't even beat this! This, is RALLY coaster, baby!!!

  • love understeer @ 2;16

  • love the maybes

  • the name of the co driver?

  • @2754iceman co driver isTerry Harryman.

  • @mariocp

    thank you very much

  • is rwd or awd?

  • @piortus - RWD

  • It's a shame Henri Toivonen had to to so soon. There wouldn't be any talk about balls or about the next FIA president. He would've claimed them on F-class car...
