The attempt to collapse all cultural meaning into mere simulacra was the excuse behind the GREED of 80’s Art market: that Art no longer had any purpose beyond it’s promotion. Damien Hirst is an old 80s whore, a Homer Simpson, surviving into the 90s, dragging intellectual Artistic civilsation back to a hoary stone Age. I personally cannot wait until the sub-prime reality of his crap, plagiarised merchandise hits him slap in the gonads. Maggot breathed cretin.
This dude is a trip. He gets dissed like all artist do. They said the same things about Duchamp and Man Ray and they still end up in Art History textbooks. The more disgusting the stuff is the more it gets noticed. There's no beauty in today's art world because pretty much the world has become uglier, plastic and disconnected from simplicity. Did people get tired of seeing things that are natural and organic? Maybe? Who knows what happened in art.
I agree, D H is nothing but a cheat, a common crook. He may be the Andy Warhol of England, but that gives him no right to treat people in the manner he does. He's a second rate Bacon in my opinion and lacks discipline. I'm absolutely gobsmacked to hear that he threatened to sue a 16 year old.
I'm not being funny but whats with the save the shark brigade? There capable of eating humans and sometimes do have you never seen Jaws? Good fucking job if you ask me! But on a serious note he just wanted a reaction and got one. Is his art any good? Well some people think so he does get paid a lot of money. I would rather not sleep with a large women but some men would love too...Personal choice and option...
Hirst is an excellent artist but NOT A GENIUS! I am sure that in France, SPain, Italy and Asia are extremely better artists. But of course Hirst is English and U.S.A. manages the Art market in the world. SORRY ARTISTS!
@MyRicardo1981 His work will not stand the test of time I guess. It lacks too much authenticity in that way that it does not have a characteristic style. You can't tell by an artworks appearence alone whether it's a work of Hirst or not. And maybe it also lacks something that makes greater works of art so timeless: beauty.
That is strange that you mention that, but please don't take this the wrong way, I'm not trying to say you are "wrong" because there is no right or wrong. I feel that Hirst has created a poignant characteristic style. And your saying that if you entered a museum or gallery and was confronted by a tank of formaldehyde and inside was the carcass of an animal you wouldn't know if it was Hirst or not? And the aesthetics, well that's not youtube appropriate.
@jefftotheresque Well, there are some objects you would recognise as made by Hirst since they attracted so much attention, like the animals in formaldehyde, but in general there is no clear stylistic element marking his works. This contrasts the work of the majority of the truly famous artists, both from the past and present. I think it is the personal mark of the artist that often makes a work of art outstanding.
(..) and i work everyday on garbage, care of natural sources and recycling, as everyone should do. but the point is, if you are smart enough, you can imagine those are very different issues! i mean how can you compare drinking water, eating, or surviving in a city, with using animals for entertainment, business, or so-called "art"? you can´t compare both things... and YOU KNOW IT. don´t you??!!.. NEXT!...
It isn't like he goes around killing innocent animals to put them in tanks as a joke. An have you ever seen his work in person? you might not be so quick to not consider it art...And not all of his art includes animals...And what's with the language? try articulating yourself a little better.
jefftotheresque... Look dude, English is NOT my language, that´s why. If you prefer, we could use mine, which is Spanish, but generally you - English speakers-, are not ready for that, if I may "respectfully" state this... Je. So, do you prefer Spanish, for a better written level? My pleasure! (by the way, what´s so bad about my English anyway?--)
I was just commenting on the crude language you used in your first comment, I didn't mean to insult your use of the English language. I don't think it is necessary to throw around vulgar language when you are trying to make intelligent statements about what is an isn't art, and use it to insult those who appreciate it. Sorry, but we aren't all vegetarians, and I find that completely irrelevant to Hirst's work. His concept has nothing to do with the depreciation of animals.
Look: art is NOT intellectualism. It should be available to anyone, easy to get. Even if you find an intellectual explanation for the work of this guy, most of the people, as long they don´t have to, anyway, DON´T get it intellectually, they just GET it, plain.
... And what you see, PLAIN, is an animal body being manipulated as if it was a decoration, and it was actually a life, has dignity, and believe me.. you didn´t want this to be done to your corpse when you die. For everyone to see you dead, and/or in pieces hanging to a cieling from your head. Now, certain, little things in life don´t deserve much of my respect, and this is one of those. The only language I believe in, against human abuse over animal existance is insulting and disgusting;
well, actually you´re right; the answer on if i´m a vegetarian is YES indeed. and most of the other answers are NO. for the flies, i use a little machine that smells badly for them so they leave.. i dont kill them. money, i dont give a damn about money. and the electricity stuff... well,, the whole point is the TYPICAL point to refuse my subjects, and it´s cheap; you know that it´s not that easy to live without electricity. come on. besides, i am in an organization for defense of animals,
FUCK HIRST, fuck everyone who think animals are on their fuckin service. Hirst´s NO artist whatsoever. I want him hanging down when he´s dead, for all animals to see.
My problem with Hirst is that most of the time he chooses between aesthetics and conceptual strength. He occasionally manages both such as in his diamond skulls, but usually he doesn't. I concede that his artwork is inventive, but most of the time its also quite boring. People really are being ripped off when they buy his work. I cannot imagine the vast majority of his stuff being worth much in 100 years, even as an investment.
@fluorogoat his going to be marked down in the art history like those who belonged in French salon, only this time the buyers of his salon arts is not the king and royalties, its the corporate assholes.
I like the feeling going on here. I will stop and say I find what he represents and what he has stolen, to be grotesque, abhorrent. He has stolen from Bacon, from Judd, even from KOONS.
I was going to write something more temperate. But yeah - kill him.

This fucker threatened to sue a 16 year-old just because the kid made $60 by selling a collage in which he used Hirst's "For the Love of God".
He's not an artist. He is a fraud, a petty schemester and a regular douchebag!
I hope he fucking dies of AIDS while swimming in semen and vomit.
