Hi, I'm working on a Half-Life 2 mod, compiling all the games into one, adding HD textures, etc.. would it be okay if I use your HDR maps and give all credit to you? If not I understand completely, I was just hoping I could avoid having to decompile all the maps, put in HDR lightmaps and recompile etc. Thanks!

The download/installation process on the steam forum post is very unclear to n00bs such as myself. I downloaded the torrent link at the bottom and got "HL2 Update by Filip Victor" - when installed, yielded "HL2 Update" in Program Files. Is it just the 1.0 or is it the 2.0? How do I apply the update to my HL2?  Please help!

@halospartan199 I believe the X-Box version was updated by default with the Episode 2 engine. So was the PC version. I don't know about PS3.

The lighting in the update catches the sun more, and has a more realistic texture, but Alyx does look angry in the update. Before, everything had a gray, trapped in look, which is actually useful to put focus on the scenario, until you get outside that is. The color is better in the update, but before the graphics show that it's a game, while the update - other than less facial expressions - doesn't. It shows the game as a planet/ universe, not a world or sandbox, but real, living, planet.

I'm just wondering, has the gmans model been updated, because playing through hl2 and then episode 1, there was a definite gap. It would be awesome if you could add some of the shader effects that give the episodes it's shine, like the reflecting of light on wet sand like in the lost coast, or increasing detail in far out places out of the map, procedural terrain displacement. Another thing, some of the outdoor sections look a little bland and artificial like water hazard or highway 17.

I remember in 2004 when half 2 came out. It was so epic for it's time it really was. So I downloaded a copy off of TPB yesterday. I could not find my copies of the game anywhere lol sorry Valve. I was going to download this graphics mod. Than I sat back an thought about it. Does this really add a huge difference to the game. Doesn't look like it seem to me they added bloom and turn the lights up lol. Anyway the story is what made this game EPIC. I am playing threw again just for that EPIC story

Some older shaders were still working, there was more backwards compatibility (func_train and func_ladder were actually functioning in-game), env_terrainmorph still worked, certain entities were easier to make, such as tripwires, phys_ maps were actually playable, and I believe that the $detail shader was still available in Source 2006. The only thing that would make Source 2006 better would be if Valve added particles.

@Aelfredus26 HDR is stupid. The particles were the only real improvement to it. Multicore rendering isn't that significant, or necessary for Source. You don't really need it as you have plenty of ways to optimize your maps, and Valve doesn't even use high polygon models that much to begin with.

As for making games for so long, they are perfecting them.. gave you seen any bugs in the game so far? In theyr games!! maybe one or 2 in whole game. But if you play other games, you see bug almost in every 1 hour, or every 30min..

@KaiNogard There arent that many bugs in most games at all. Games like codblops (which would have been awful even without the bugs and glitches) are fairly rare now. Of course every game on PC will find SOME people with problems, but making a 3 hour game for 6 years is NOT good development. If they take that long to make that 3 hours, how come they can release a sequel for a MP shooter (l4d) in less than a year when it doesnt NEED a sequel? It didnt take them 6 years to make l4d so dont say that

@KaiNogard Took me 3 hours to finish episode 1, 3 1/2 to finish episode 2. So I suppose it could be a 4 hour game if the trend of upping by half hour continues. But until they actually tell us they are even working on it at all, we cant even speculate.

All they are doing is ignoring the game that PC gamers want so they can keep making games for the console kids.

This is the developer who always said PC comes first, and also claimed episodic gaming would allow them to release hl2 faster than ever

I like the update, but I think they upped the brightness too much, the small things like more shine on the objects, better fire, and better effects overall I like, but the brightness take away a lot of detail from many of the textures.

Source engine isn't outdated, but it's losing its appeal. The source engine is lacking in many graphical features that are standard in modern games. Dynamic lighting and phong lighting became mainstream just shortly after the release of Half Life 2. And nowadays, Half Life still can only run dynamic shadowing from 1 or 2 light sources. Hell, the source engine still uses lightmapping.

Fire and water is awesome in updated version and also blood looks better etc.. but some things have became worse! Like the tv's where's Dr. Breen. in the latest 2010 version there's so much light that you can't even see his fucking face -.- you just see white face and mouth moving and still shadows doesn't look same like in episode 2.. and what's with the aurora borealis lights at 2:18. Good that they are removed now because it's not possible in Eastern-Europe unless if that's some Combine thing

@YourW0rstEnemy You can prob run on med to high settings. The mod is similar to what Half life 2 lost coast did, with better lighting and stuff. Your laptop is better than my humble desktop and that could run half life 2 fully maxed at like 25fps, so your laptop should have no problem.
