There were white children adopted by Natives long ago and they are considered natives even though they may not have any real native blood. DNA tests cant determine tribal affiliation but it can determine race. Unfortunately there is a prejudice that exists. Read the history of the Dawes Commission (allotment) if you want to know the history of blood quantum. The White government came up with bood quantum, not the Cherokees. And freedmen didn't get kicked out of the Nation because they were black, they got kicked out because they couldn't prove heritage (family ties) The cherokee nation currently has thousands of Black/Cherokee Tribal Citizens.

When they were freed they were made Cherokee Citizens as long as they remained in the Cherokee Nation. The ones in question had ancestors that did not mix with Cherokee. They have less right to become citizens of the CN than many who have Cherokee DNA and can't!

There were white children adopted by Natives long ago and they are considered natives even though they may not have any real native blood. DNA tests cant determine tribal affiliation but it can determine race. Unfortunately there is a prejudice that exists. Read the history of the Dawes Commission (allotment) if you want to know the history of blood quantum. The White government came up with bood quantum, not the Cherokees. got 3 cherokee ancestors my 2 of my great great great grandmothers were full blood Cherokee so thats 3 percent each and my great great grandfather was cherokee on my fathers side so thats 6 percent for great great all together im12%.. Yes. EVERYONE should prove they're Cherokee. Forget the Black blood issue. I am aware of my blood lines from my maternal & paternal grandmothers. 1 problem. Not only were families split during trail of tears. There were issues of sorts within families and for what ever reason they went their separate ways.Some id as white others Black. Just to get work in the City (Atlanta, GA) You get the picture? BIG prob with Census of our mixed race elders taken in Atlanta during the 40's and 50's.

as far as i know the laws for acceptance have not changed......But if you feel you are being wronged there is the US governments Agency for Indian affairs,They could assist you.Not all Cherokee went the trail of tears.The eastern band was sent to North Carolina.

I know of no such tribe that still exists. The Uchi still barely exist and the Lumbee are a multitude of peoples, even they still have state recognition, so I really don't see your point.

That's not true, his ancestors either considered themselves black or they weren't native at all. Belonging to haplo group c doesn't make one a Native American. I know of people whose ancestors were Muscogee and Black and they were on the Dawes Rolls, and their ancestor was a black male and a Muscogee female after removal. People should stop whining about things that they can't change. You don't see me whining about my ancestors not being on the Dawes, but an earlier one.

This video is stupid. Why do so many people whose ancestors were not listed on the Dawes Rolls as Cherokees insist they are Cherokee Citizens now? It's very disturbing. Anytime I hear freedmen speak about their "entitlements" as "Cherokees" they talk about how they want their benefits and their "free" car tags and how Cherokees don't pay taxes. What? Yeah right, if my company wasn't supposed to be taking taxes out of my paycheck then the federal government owes me a lot of money back.

It's not so much they want to be considered full Cherokee, which is rediculous, but to be acknowledged as descendants if proven beyond a reasonable doubt. No one can deny you what you are. Your DNA or whatever is who you are but not what you are. Not until you have lived it passed it on to your children and thanked the creator daily for keeping you amongst your own. Then you should be able to say 'I am '.

To be black, brown or red was not an option for you or me at birth. We are born into our race, our clan. You are a "citizen" of a Nation by constitution. Constitutions change, race does not. My blood makes me Cherokee and the Chinese-Chinese. Is it an option for me to be accepted as a Black man if it is in a Constitution? I is my hope that all who seek tribal membership will find success and that this success be based on a Cherokee blood line

Are you saying that the Cherokee Nation should ignore the Rolls all together? I understand your point. But the Nation also states 1 drop. If one has knowledge & proof, shouldn't they be allowed in? Just 2 decades ago you had to know your family history , full names of elders as well as blood quantum. That is no more. I agree, with one drop you are my brother or sister. No where in the constitution is anyone outcast for other heritage. It only REQUIRES Native American blood. On the rolls Freedmen are noted clearly as non blood members.

This video states "admit Blacks into the Cherokee Nation" This is not a club with dues or membership forms. We are a RACE of people, born into one of seven clans as noted by the seven pointed star. The Freed Men were taken in throuh the generosity of members of the Cherokee Nation. Many of these Freed Men had children with the Cherokee. Those children were/are born into the Cherokee Nation. The Cherokee Nation VOTED not Chad Smith. The Nation spoke with this vote.

Being Cherokee is not a question of race, but a question of citizenship. The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, when it agreed to allotment also agreed to make their black slaves citizens of the Nation 'as long as the grass grows green'. When they decided that, they were the ones who decided that Cherokee blood didn't matter. Funny now that they change their minds when all the other Indians are pointing fingers at the Cherokees with pale skin...

For some reason they tried to make it hard to prove NA ancestry for black people. I am black and have family on the Final Dawes Rolls, but on their census it says mulatto. It was dangerous for them so they had to choose a race either white, black, or mulatto.

They just said they do not belong to the Nation of Oklahoma...how hard is that to understand? Cherokee Freedman should be their own group if they do not belong to the Dawes roll that the Cherokee nation of OK goes by. Maybe they should belong to the Nation in Georgia....The Tahlequah Tribe just wants to keep to it's original tribe...what's wrong with that?

I'm glad you think you know me and my history. I live it everyday.My grandma is from Tahlequah, OK. I know the full history and each of the 5 Civilized tribes go by certain rolls and DNA and the rules should be followed. If what I say about the Black Cherokees isn't true then how come they are not calling themselves African Americans like the bi-racial black and whites do? It's not ignorant it's the truth..we have family on Dawes roll, but are having a hard time proving it. But I'm not whining.

You are exactly correct. They checked the blood line of the Cherokee Freedman and all the ones who showed bloodline in the Dawes roll was allowed to be a member those who weren't were dismissed. I am Cherokee and cannot trace my blood to Dawes roll and I don't complain about being a member. When blacks are black and white they want to be black, but when they are Cherokee and black they want to be Cherokee...go figure...

All I was saying is that blacks don't want to be called white, but it's okay if they want to be called Cherokee. That doesn't make any sense to me. Like Obama, he is as much white as he is black, but they want to call him black and not white. Why? I just think the Freeman need to stick with their Cherokee tribe and not push themselves on the Oklahoma Cherokees. Only the Black Caucus in Congress is making a big deal about this. To me, it's not about blood. It's about citizenship. If a bunch of white peopl can do all the horros they did to Black people for centries, and still give us the dignity of citizenship, then it is absolutly shameful that Native Americans would not, when these UnCivilized tribes treated us no better! I'm decended of Seminole Freedmen and I honestly can't figure out why on earth any Black people would even even won't to enroll when we are obviously not welcomed. I say screw it!

It's very sad to see some of the comments made by some people here. My father is nanticoke/lenape and my mother is african american with some blackfoot ancestory. I REFUSE to allow anyone to deny me my heritage, and there are countless thousands of individuals that share similar backgrounds.

The notion of a peoplehood, an ethnicity, a tribe, a nation, etc. being based on race was intro'd to we Native peoples by white racist conquerors, the better to divide & conquer us , & keep us under control after the conquest. i believe that if you make sure to see if blacks actually have native than you should do the same exact thing to whites. I am definitely NOT racist but i believe that one particular race that has native shouldnt be voted out without checking on the other races. How ironic though that the main race that NA people had problems with (whites) are their representatives.
