the first snipers was people with automatic(yes automatic) rifles with tree costumes, the tree was made from leather, and painted so it looks like tree.

@SerenaBlackCat I forgot that bit. Chaplin and I assume the Director were so innovative with their comedy. No words, all in action. And remember, this film was made in 1918, the last year of the war. Very topical at the time.
