  • that reaction is not about orchestra, just about her reed. when i talked with her she said that she absolutely didn't like this kind of videos.. and she is right!. because it's not official. i have rehearsal videos but never shared from anybody!. also weber concerto video on youtube, she said that her son watched and told her that it was great concert mom, then she schoked when she saw herself on youtube. :) i just wanted to share to you about her reaction guys.. have a good day!.

  • And the orchestra does definitely not follow her insane tempo.

  • ich glaube sie war mit ihrem Blatt ganz am schluss nicht so ganz zufrieden :-D

  • Well is it just me or is the conductor sitting in a chair conducting with a slouched back?

  • Basset Clarinet!

  • yes!!!!!!!!!!! I love it

  • sa-ti dau flautul meu sa sufli

  • @oldjarhead Id like to see you do half as good sitting still, with the music in front of you, and a metronome/tuner on the stand. Otherwise dont disgrace a genius with your mediocrity.

  • are those eff me boots?

  • Fine playing, and quite obviously a rehearsal. Anyone who plays the clarinet in public regularly will recognize the expression on her face at the end of this clip.

That lunge to her right is an attempt to get the concertmaster with her on tempo by getting in his line of vision.

  • she has the best sound of any player I've ever heard.

  • @cstathis15 You obviously have never listened to david shifrin...

  • @memphis148 They have completely different styles. Meyer's playing is very sensitive and has a classic German sound while Shifrin's sound is shinier and shows off more but I guess it's not as bad as Drucker.

  • @emeralddreams888 I also take Frost or Leister over Meyer any day.

  • @cstathis15 Yes, her tone is remarkable.

  • Because you know... "onstage antics" definitely equals bad playing. Who the hell do you think you are?

  • you comment is inexcusable also

  • Even though the video/sound quality is crap, this is easily some of the best clarinet playing available on youtube.

Thank you for capturing this moment and exploiting Sabine by putting this "out there" for us to see.

Maybe next time you won't see dollar bills every time you go to a concert with some sexy clarinet players.

  • Without Audio you might think she plays Stockhausen.

Why all that "Gezappel" during the Mozart ?

    Terrible to look at.

Better to close your eyes and listen to the music.

  • Basset clarinet.

Meh. The video has bad quality. But other wise, nice video.

  • why didn't the conductor follow the soloist, isn't that the key ingredient for concertos?

Any amateur-pro muso would have realised she wanted it faster and yet he ignorantly did not follow her.

  • I tend to disagree - I don't hear that at all. In fact, the BNO probably follows quite well.

  • She is so cool!!

  • della serie....grandi ma pur sempre umani

  • fantastica semplicemente

  • J'aime beaucoup la violoniste derrière... le reste n'a pas d'importance!!

  • why does that clarinet look so long?

  • i just finished studying Sabine.. I'm a fellow clarinet music ed. major at the University of Miami. Sabine while playing the Mozart Concerto OP. 622, she uses the Basset Clarinet hence why it might seem like a bit longer and has a more open-bored sound than the typical Bb soprano clarinet (this was the origional instrument Anton Stadler premiered the piece on in 1791)

  • Anton Stadler is thought to have actually invented the Basset clarinet. Mozart was under a spell from the sound of the instrument so wrote the piece for Stadler. I find it funny that we spend $12000 on a clarinet to play one Concerto, but it's historically accurate.

  • Anton Stadler did not invent the Basset Clarinet. It was invented by a famous instrument maker from Wien. Of course, he was good enough to inspire Mozart on the other hand. But he shouldn't take credits for something that was invented by another musician.

  • It's a basset clarinet...extra keys to play the concerto as mozart originally intended.

  • Very nice to see her just rehearsing. Thanks for uploading!!

  • and she is not happy with her reed!!! cool...

  • Not at all!!!

  • BELLISSIMO!!!!!!

  • Whether you play mozart the correct or wrong way you will ALWAYS get somebody to say that they didn't like it. It's the nature of this piece, some peolple like it slower and some people like it a bit faster.

  • she is greath

  • I love this video, specially the end! thanks for uploading.

  • wow, very nice!!

  • I'm a staunch Emma Johnson fan but I really admire the freedom Sabine Meyer plays with. Her sound (maybe it's just this particular room she's playing in) seems to have more of an edge and it's a bit sharper (not pitch-wise) than a lot of British and American clarinetists, for example David Shifrin.

  • Yes I agree. German clarinet style is in a way slimmer and more "centered" than English.

  • I'm confused - is it a concerto or a ballet?

  • ur a bitch

  • Well, a bit of ballet doesn't hurt anyone. In her case, I don't mind, she is so terrific!

  • she makes it look so easy!

  • wow crazy. and what is she playing? its too long to be a bflat clarinet.

  • It's a basset horn, an "extended" clarinet. The Mozart clarinet concerto was written originally for this instrument.

  • It is not a basset horn, it is a basset clarinet. A basset HORN is pitched in F below this instrument, and generally has a curved metal neck and bell, much like the alto clarinet.

  • you are right, what a silly mistake I made! thanks Quantumlord for the correction!

  • It's fantastic, I would like to listen her. I think she's one of the best clarinetists in the world and her sound is perfect

  • amazing!! really fun the finalpart! she's like fUCK! FuckINg reeD! hahaha

  • It wasn't the reed she was pissed off at! It was the orchestra apparently ... and not the first time she vented her spleen in such circumstances: she's quite the prima donna! I know from experience, having attended a number of her Master Classes!

  • I love you Sabine! You're the best! Excellent!

  • WOOO, Im going to see her perform live at teh Bridgewater hall in December she is playing this very piece on basette clarinet, as here, it is a 4 hour concert, i sooo cant wait cos she is damn amazing.

  • the material above is only what she usually plays. KV 622 is usually played on an A-Clarinet, however on this video she's using what we in german call a "Bassett-Klarinette" - a crossover between an Clarinet in A and a bassethorn.

    greetz

(If you're interested in crazy clarinet players check out the world quintet - unbelievable stuff)

  • this is the only true instrument that the concerto itself has been written for. A friend of Mozart played it and inspired the genius to write the piece. Don't talk about stuff that you don't know. The instrument is not a crossover between anything - it's the right instrument to play the concerto.

  • she's playing a german "wurlitzer" clarinet, built by Herbert Wurlitzer. Mouthpiece is Zinner M3 i think. and reeds are mostly self-made - if not she usually uses G&S Steuer. I called her and asked :D.

    greetz

    tilmaen

  • O_O WAIT WHAT? YOU CALLED HER??? WHA? [[if this is not true i'll hate myself...>.> i'm guillible...really guillible]]

  • This is one of the best clarinetist in the world. That tone, wow! Her staccato is perfect!

  • I completely agree with you Michele... she is one of my heroes.

  • that's also a good musical reason clarinetmaniac09

  • The reason sabine Meyer Rushes is because she can there is nothing in the music that says you must stay at one tempo and that is why I like her because she dosen't play the clarinet concertos like most clarinet players would...BORING!!!!

  • i agree completely with that, eheh--I was too critical -0-; sorry!

I've heard many clarinetist play this and just now i realized how great she is ::ummm the first time i saw this i was a bit freaked out for some reason...yeah i'm an idiot:: sorry D=

anyways, like i said i agree completely with your reason, i actually do that too myself.....

  • you dont know what you're talking about.

  • well obviously you don't know how to be musical you are probably one of those clarinet players who just have to do EVERYTHING like a computer but you know you're the one who is stupid and I am exactly right so you can leave me alone because you are VERY STUPID

  • either she or you:)

  • you have to play Mozart boring if you want to win an orchestral audition unfortunately....i like to romanticize classical and baroque styles but it is not the style....lol

  • i love you sabine!!!

  • I don't feel happy about it.

    to easy...to raucous?

    to make a row?

  • Miyo, as far as I read here http://clariperu.blogspot.com/2006/02/sabine-meyer.html Sabine wa not so happy with the rehearsal, and she was trying to push several times the orchestra (in her tempo). I think you are right about the rush, but it was for that reason!

  • when he did the g scale in the sixteenth note paettern, i noticed that he rushed alot on it-.-; and didn't do the right rhyhtm...unless me ears are telling me wrong :/

    it was pretty good...he sorta scares me tho o.O;;;;;

  • oh shoot its a girl o.O sorry -_-x...so anyways...

    pretty good :D.....

  • I was just about to say :P

  • impressive

    great vid
