As an Italian-American, I can tell you that the Poles were never liberated by the Nazis. Poles were considered subhuman by the Nazis, their universities closed, their intelligencia executed. Poles were subjected to forced labor. John Paul II was forced from the university to work in a quarry. His best friend, Jerzy Kluger, whose Jewish family was like his own, was forced to flee. Jerzy's family was exterminated. They met again in Rome and remained best friend till John Paul II's death.
Maby you're right. the older Jewish man laying in a street in Lwów during the pogrom in July 1941, looks like the Grand Rabbi Ben Zion Halberstam who was one of the 5000-6000 Jews in Lwow who were lynched by the Polish and Ukrainian mob in their celebration of being "liberated" by the Germans after ca. 2 years Soviet occupation.
