It's so much about receiving attention, the main purpose people go on, even if it's for a quick second, is to check if there are any notifications in which people have commented on something of yours.
But it's become so routine that it seems to be like a sub concious thing that has been programmed into the users of these sites (I would say I fall into that category too), and we no longer think we want attention.
