  • just an awesome song, and a timeless performance by an unforgetable artist.

  • Just love the guy..........listen to his music regularly even today. RIP Freddie, we love you and will never forget you.

  • He was buried in his hometown of San Benito. His family is committed to continue the Freddy Fender Scholarship Fund and other philanthropic causes which the musician was passionate about. Doesn't sound like he was drunk and broke, but maybe....

  • He had a kidney transplant in 2002 donated by his daughter & a liver transplant in 2004. But, his condition continued to worsen. He was suffering from an "incurable cancer" in which he had tumors on his lungs. December 31, 2005, he performed his last concert & resumed chemotherapy. He died in 2006 at the age of 69 of lung cancer at his home in Corpus Christi, Texas, with his family at his bedside.

  • Freddy's first contest win was for a sack of food ... It was hard times in hot dusty south texas... San Benito ...Robstown ... Corpus ..

Freddy , Albert , Pete and others dreamed and achieved their even short success at a time when the door was pretty much shut for poor boys from migrant worker towns.

They did not forget where they came from and tried to help others. I remember them.

    Vaya Con Dios

  • Larry Rosa we love ya boy.

  • Rest in Peace San Benito, Texas Boy....

    Great Song.

I used to ask my salsa dance teacher (gay hispanic) to play this. He would revolve me around the dance floor making giant swoops until I couldn't hold it anymore. He took me to the ladies' room cuz I was laughing so hard. --Maria from Houston (not hispanic).

  • I had the pleasure to be Freddy's drummer for all of his east coast shows back in 1981 and 1982....Certainly a highlight in what has been a wonderful career in the music business.. ...........written 02/11/2011 dannysnow47@att.net

  • @dannysnow47 What a thrill that must have been. He was such a talented singer, and sang with passion. I may be a huge classic rock lover, but I was raised on country records from the 50's, 60's and 70's (as well as doo wop). I can only imagine what a great experience it must have been for you to have played with one of country music's greatest.
