In my opinion this was the best Gamecocks team ever. Even better than the '84 team. So much talent on both sides of the ball. Had UGA beat or tied at worse until Green fumbled on the 2. Turnovers gave Nebraska that particular game, and took the eventual National Champion Hurricanes down to the wire. Didn't show up for the Gator Bowl against LSU unfortunately, but still USC could have easily won 11 games.
Remember that during the Sparky era, he had to clean up the program from drugs, and mainly steroids. I loved coach Morrison. He is still my favorite USC coach. He would have stepped down in 1989 had he not passed away. The pressure was great. In 1989, and 1990 Sparky's first two seasons, the school turned down two straight bowl bids. That really hurt recruiting in my book. That helped seal coach Wood's fate, along with joining the SEC. Woods should have been allowed alot more time to build .
Great player. Great Play. Epic game. Damn, I wish things could have ended up better for Coach Joe Morrison. Maybe not a Bear Bryant or Danny Ford, but he seemed to be just getting our team to the level of a "Perennial National Power" around the time of this game and the following season (1988). I think most agree that Sparky Woods pretty much tore down everything Joe had built up for USC during the 80's. R.I.P. Coach Joe Morrison!
@gvillegmcck Steroids scandal tore it apart. NOT Woods. Read the wise poster above you. We turned down two bowl appearances due to it. We haven't had a truly bad coach even with Woods or Scott. Scott gave us a bowl victory.
@bridaco No, Scott was a horrible coach. He won with Wood's players and left our program in the tank when he left. I have a ton of hate for that cocksucker, especially when Clemson carried his fat ass off the field after they beat us in 1999 and he was an assistant there. It was like he was shoving his ineptness in our face.
I remember this game like it was yesterday. It was so cold. We beat a great Clemson team that year. Great times. Yes, we should have won every game on the schedule. Even Miami, and Nebraska! The run, and shoot was not the best idea in my view. We should have stuck with the option/veer. What fun team to watch.
Congratulations to Brad Edwards who leads the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame's Class of 2011! Go Cocks & Go home Clemson! Go home Clemson! Ha! I love it! Great video. Thanks!
The Black Death!!! Perhaps one of the most underated defenses in the history of college football. If USC didnt turn the ball over so much in 87, this team could have easily been undefeated instead of 8-4
@JTUSC2001 good point. I remember we held NC State to 30 yards of total offense in a 48-0 blowout and the week before, State beat a good Clemson team in the Valley. this defense was scary good, and the offense had both Sterling Sharpe and Harold Green. This team had the talent to run the table no doubt.
@bull864 Your right! there was a ton of talent on offense too as you mentioned Sharpe and Green. Danny Smith was a beast at TE not to mention Ryan Bethea was a pretty good WR as well. Ellis just through entirely too many picks. The 4 games USC lost that year were due to turnovers.
@JTUSC2001 I forgot about ryan bethea! He was a monster at WR! Yeah, what could have been. To this day, I hate Todd Ellis for screwing up what could have been a magical year.
when usc has white in any part of their uniforms, they get creamed.....no more white....i dont understand it put back the stars on the helmets too....gimme a break

I remember this game when I was a little kid, Rodney Williams played like garbage this game, arguably his worst game during his Clemson career.
