One problem with Charcloth is it requires fire to get it. Tinder fungus does not. However it is a bit hard to find especially if birch are young due to severe fire kill.
If your asking if thin wood slivers will work as tinder? probably not for this method, it takes a very specific type of tinder- if you cant find any fungus try charcloth
I wouldnt say its impossible because it was obviously done in the past, it just takes a level of skill that I, or anyone i know lack. I know a few great craftsmen who can create one with a machine shop- or even just metal tools.
No, it is not impossible but may take weeks to get it right. Think about the tolerances required. I made fire last year with my bare hands - it was rewarding. I used the bow method but did cheat by using my boot lace. Technically, I have still not made fire with pure primative things from the forest. I will do that next year. Probably the Tom Hanks plow method...not the diesel method as it would take too much time.
The way you make a perfect cylinder its by securing a sharp edge and spin the piece of wood in order to get a uniform cut.
There are many ways you can set it up but the trick is the spin.

If you listen carefully he says it's not friction fire. He says it works with compressing air like a deisel engine.

Why does he call this 'friction'. Its air pressure.

He mentions this in the video, but your point is valid.

If I use small thin bits of wood instead, will it still work? I would really appreciate an answer. :b

its possible but very hard, you need to use decayed but dried wood, otherwise known as punk.

a close up of the actual object would of been clearer, but good job nonetheless.
