Yes, the animal died..and that is a sad and tragic thing. I love the Derby, but not to watch an animal in pain and die...but Hillary DID tell people to watch and compare "Belles" outcome to her race...so tragic as it is for the horse, its owners, etc...one cannot help but find humor in the irony that she brought up this past Thursday and Friday.
