Taking mine at the next possible test session, I think I struggle most with the inside twizzles :/ but out of all the crappy inside twizzles I have seen, I have to say that your insides were very nice :)
Oh, I think your twizzles were fine. I am really struggling with them, though. I am hoping to test Novice MIF this summer and start competing next year. Not quite ready to compete at the masters int/nov level; still need a consistent axel (I can do it, but still a little afraid of it) and just started working on doubles again.
@kmerriam2002 Thank you! on the Jr MIF it's the choctaws that I'm struggling with. If I can test them this summer, I'll be lucky! I can't wait to be done with the moves.
Really enjoyed this video. I am a 46 year old adult skater (passed Int Free and 4th figure test back in 1983) and just started skating again 9 months ago (28 year hiatus LOL). I am working on the Novice MIF and find the "figure-like" moves to be pretty easy, but the twizzles are very difficult (especially the left ones). Back in my day, we NEVER had to do things in both directions; which I think is good now vs. then. The loops are quite easy for me (I had to do them as figures). Great job!
@kmerriam2002 Thank you for your very nice comment. The loops were my favorite and, agreed, the twizzle pattern was horrible. My stomach would do flip-flops with anxiety as I did the mohawk into the inside portion of the pattern. I'm so glad I am done with that one. Now I wrestling with the Jr. patterns. Congrats on returning to the ice!!!
My personal opinion, they should have passed you after asking for a reskate of the Rocker Choctaws. They can't expect the loops to be like we use to do back in the figure days as long as the skater demonstrates a technique of a correct loop which I felt you did. They should also take into consideration that you're an adult skater. I'm glad you're going to keep going, though. My student recently passed her Novice MIF.
@amariyarbrough thanks! I was a little surprised that they didn't ask me to reskate the Rocker Choctaws. I'm testing standard track, not adult track so the lower adult passing average doesn't apply to me. I retook the test the next month and passed (I jusgt haven't had time to edit the video and post it).
@chapstickgurl1 Actually, I started at pre-juv MIF. When I skated as a kid we still had to do figures. Because MIF didn't exist when I skated before, I got to start with the next level after the last figures test that I passed. So, in the last year and half of skating I've tested Adult silver MIF, Adult gold MIF, pre-juv, juv, intermediate (2x) and now on Novice MIF.
@chapstickgurl1 MIF are easier to learn and you don't freeze as you spend 45 minutes drawing figure 8s on the ice (or changing your skates every 45 minutes 'cause you have fs skates and patch skates). However, I am a firm believer that figures taught better edge control. You didn't see kids zipping through their figure tests like you see now. I saw in Skating magazine that one girl passed all of the MIF tests in 8 months! How is that even possible?
@LisairaF Yeah, and that pattern, along with the loops, is usually my best one too. I'm not really sure what happened. If those 2 patterns had been in top shape as they usually are then I probably would have passed. *sigh* oh well. such is skating :)
I have a fear for testing, do you have any tips to calm nerves? I'm sorry you didn't pass, you were ssoooo close!!!!! When do you think you'll test again?
@KatieShrimp2018 Thank you! You have to wait 28 days until next test. A club 1.5 hrs away has a test Sept 25th, otherwise I have to wait until Nov or Dec. Nerves are hard to deal with. I try to just stay away from everyone where it is quiet, positive talk, visualize perfect performances, and focus on what i need to do so my brain doesn't have a chance to freak out. it's a skill you develop with practice just like everything else in skating.
