If you cut the glass like this, do you still have the scarp edges ? (can you cut yourself on the edges?) If the answer is yes, what can you do make them blunt?
I dont have sound on my computer and you spent way too long videoing tools...I suppose you must have been talking about some real interesting things to do with the tools during that time....
I heard that your supposed to use a silicone adhesive, not sealant because they both create a seal but the adhesive actually holds the glass panels together better. I know ADA uses adhesives and places like glass cages. Just wanted to clarify if the Window and Door silicone is an adhesive or a sealant. Thanks!
@Supertasticaquatics You are correct. You are supposed to use an adhesive silicone and not a sealant silicone, as used in the video. Use RTV 108 if you want clear adhesive silicone, and RTV 103 if you want black adhesive silicone.
WOW This was REALLY helpful. Once i get glass (may ask my grandma if she can buy me some) I'm gonna create a 200 - 400 gallon tank as a native tank then make a 75 - 100 gallon maybe with a tank connector but idk. Might make 2 so 1 i can have cichlids and such and the other for regular tropical fish.
Hi im so glad u made this video! I love fish #1 but I was trying to make I cubed glass table and this is how I found u! Now I know how to do it. 1 quedtion, is there any other sealant I can use being tht im not gonna use my cube as a tank? U know like sumthing more decorative but sturdy?
THANKS A TON MAN! im makin one for my dad in our new house! and im following your video and instructions! great vid. right down to the basics, nothing more. i watched all your videos now and you are my favorite sub!
I plan on making breeder tanks with large plastic storage containers and I was wondering if I cut a square out of one side of the container if I could use silicone to place and seal a section of glass? I guess my question is will the silicone hold plastic and glass as good as glass on glass?
ok, i need a bit of help with a question here. I am going to build a very large aquarium in my room to house large game fish. The tank needs to be about 2' wide, 3' tall, and about 7' long. How many gallons will that hold and what precautions do I have to take to make sure the tank will not dump on the floor and break my glass as it is very expensive to buy. Thank you for helping!
@Carbon344 Volume is some simple math, L x W x H, and we'll use inches. 24" x 36" x 84" = 72,576 cubic inches. If we divide that by 231 (that's how many ci are in one gallon, also in one Buick V6) 72,576 / 231 = 314.2 gallons. A 300+ gallon aquarium could weigh in over 3000lbs. The first thing to consider is: What is your floor made of? If is a concrete slab, you're probably ok, if it's not, you'll need some reinforcement.
just out of pure curiosity i heard from person from home depot that silicon inst strong enough to hold water when it comes to glass aquariums i didn't believe them because u wouldn't be doing the video but then again i don't wanna waste money because i'm gonna do one thank you plz reply back and nice man aid
i bought a used tank from my petstore because they were closing and the tank had a filter hole with the filter attachment in it but the glue or whatever it is is coming off and water spills out what can i use to plug the whole....silicon??? and what brand
@BulwarkofAzzinoth Home-Depot does not sell glass sheets to my understanding. You need to go to a specialty glass store. You can search the yellow pages or Google to find a glass store nearest you, but they are everywhere. Some specialty aquarium stores actually sell precut sheets of glass/ acrylic and everything needed to put them together for all the DIY'ers
@jindark12 Also, making a 10 Gallon aquarium is not really a smart idea, considering they cost anywhere from $9.98 -$13.99 at the store, materials & labor would cost more.
hello thanks heep this video is great i just had one question would u be bale to put the glass in the sides of the base or do they have to be on top of the base thanks :)
@idae209 Most glass is produced as "annealed" glass. Also known as "plate" glass, "sheet" glass and other local names. This is they type of glass most commonly used for the windows in your house. It should be easier to find than tempered glass (also called toughened glass). Any place you can have a piece of glass cut to size for a window will have it.
tempered glass cant be cut period, it will blow up, the only reason its harder to work with it is because if you chip the corner it will blow into a million little peices, but you can hit the center with a hammer and nothing will happen, its much stronger then regular plate glass. you just need to get youre measurements right, call any glass shop you can order it there
i really want to build a 500 gallon reef tank with 8 x3 x3 dimensions that will house a snowflake eel, an angel, a banded cat shark, a cali stingray, a lionfish , a trigger, a flounder, a few tangs , a couple rabbits, and 2 clowns, like 10 margarita snails, a few peppermint shrimp, and like 10 minnows (just because im weird like that), also an anemone (for the clowns), live coral & sand
@omgoprah Peppermint shrimp and triggers will not work together 9 times out or 10. Even if it did work for a little bit they would get eaten sooner or later for sure.
if i wanted to make a 40 gallon....how much glass would i need? the tank would be 48 1/4 inches x12 3/4 inches x16 7/8 inches.....im thinking it should be somewhere around 1/2 inch thick? But what do you think?
im thinking about using a large plastic storage container and cutting a square out for a single front panel of glass. would silicone work? how could i rig some lighting?
Don't you want to put some sort of framing around the top and bottonm to hold it all together? I'm just askin I have never built one but I have an 80 gallon in my den and it has serious bracing. Even my first 10 gallon had bracing. Let me know!

@w0lsky it says in the video. 100% Silicone for Windows and Doors.....type doesn't matter as long as it's 100% silicone with no mildew resisters and additives.
one question pal, u gave me the idea of making a tank, i ordered glass for the the tank, 12ft x 4ft x 4ft, and i've welled up a steel frame, just wondering is their a certain type of silicone to use as the volume of water, the frame i've made should help support it, any help u can give will be grateful
@ming245 I really have no experience in tanks that size.....in fact that sounds more like a large pond or a small pool. You're probably going to need some kind of braces or super thick glass. Ask on reefcentral there a few large tank builds there.
good video, although your only using SSB, or 1/16" glass. glass cutting bit was a little shotty, score it once and be done with it. and tempered glass isnt hard to cut, its impossible. no way possible to cut a piece of tempered glass.
Have you ever noticed that aquariums 55gal and larger all say on the bottom "Warning: Tempered Glass. Do Not Drill." I currently have 58 fish tanks and have a friend that is a professional tank builder. Most tanks have only a tempered bottom panel, whereas larger tanks have the front, back, and bottom panel tempered. Please don't give advice if you don't know. We don't need anyone loosing all their fish or getting hurt.
@GEOPAIH1234: you obviously don't know much about aquariums or glass for that matter do you? He was right about using tempered glass for an aquarium. It is MUCH stronger than standard plate or annealed glass because it is tempered just like tempered steel is. The tempering process freezes the molecules at a particular point which makes it stronger.
hi,i would like to build a 5 feet tank,2 feet height,2 feet wide.the glass i am using is 12 mm,thick.what should i do to make a tank like this.what will i need.i heard that to stick all corners of the tank with a tape.then glue it with an aquarium glue.can you please define it.then it will be a great help for me.thaxs

Do you know if the frames or braces are even important. I have a 40 gallon tank that's missing the top frame is it safe to fill it up with water? Cool video.
@Abven9 depends on the height and width of the tank, the width of the glass, and other techniques for strengthening the holds. Check online or with tank makers about the need for braces.
Sir did you used a Aquarium safe Silicone? you need to use a aquarium safe silicone..just to avoid poisoning the fish,,home depot sell those silicone..made by GE.
Hiya m8, he did state at the beginning to use aquarium safe silicone, and although the silicone he was using said doors and windows on it, it was still fine as its 100% silicone and dont contain any contaminants that would affect fish/inverts etc.
@ikelleners Experienced huh, well you should know that you never use hardened glass for aquariums. Just a single nick in the corner could cause it to explode.
Noooooo, I was most interested in seeing how you siliconed it but for me the video always freezes at 7:12 which is like 5 seconds into the silicone step.
I gave you 5 stars for this video I have been contemplating doing this for a couple of years now but didn't think it would hold I now see it us totally possible and will try it in the near future if I can I'll make a video and if there is any snags hopefully you would tell me were iv gone wrong thanks for the great video keep em comin would "tec7" be a better silicon as it's very hard wearing
@crazyboutcamaro Due to the tank size you are doing, I recommend using Momentive 103 or 108 (depending if ya want clear or black). It has more tensile strength than standard silicone. A lot of custom tank builders use this. Also make sure you have the right thickness of glass. I wouldn't use anything smaller than 3/8" but 1/2" would be better. That being said, it's exspensive. I just spent $100 replacing a 5 foot by 2 foot piece on my tank due to a crack 3/8"
@crazyboutcamaro Your glass is NOT thick enough for the size tank that you are wanting to build. Check online for aquarium glass thickness calculators and it will give you size thickness of glass needed. I wouldn't do anything much over a 55g with 1/3 inch glass.
for a size about 30 gallons, 100cm by 35cm by about 34cm(depending on thickness of glass) what type of glass should I use? cause no sites ever tell me what type of glass. any glass will do? or should I move to something more heavy duty?
I'm looking to build a 4x4 ft aquarium for a film... I'm basically using it for a film where I want to put a person inside. Any tips? Do you think plexi-glass would hold stronger than tempered glass? Would I need to reinforce the corners more due to the larger overall size? Or do you think silicone will still hold for a tank of this size? How thick do you think the tempered glass should be? Or if I use plexi?
Any help tips would be awesome. Thanks and great video!
Why not take the glass to a glazier and have her bevel the edges? This would give you more surface area for the silicone to adhere to (=a stonger bond?). I'd also use black silicone (because I think it looks cooler) and I'd use thicker glass (especially on the bottom). It looks like you're using ~5-6mm glass. I'd use 8-10mm on the sides and then 12mm on the bottom. The thicker glass would also add surface area to the beveled edges, making for a much better bond.
hey ricket im making a little 1 gallon tank out of acrylic cause i still want a little frag tank on my desk and have my awesome 45 gallon reef set up. do you think that this would work for the acrylic? like i have it all cut just wondering is this silicon will hold together enough. i used it on my diy protein skimmer but it isn't running yet i just siliconed my sump today and will put it in tomorrow and hook everything up. if you could get back to me asap that'd b awesome.
where do u buy a thick ass glass? home depot only sell thin glass which sucks ass hell

good video, although your only using SSB, or 1/16" glass. glass cutting bit was a little shotty, score it once and be done with it. and tempered glass isnt hard to cut, its impossible. no way possible to cut a piece of tempered glass.
kandyce1323 1 year ago

The tempering process freezes the molecules at a particular point which makes it stronger.

what thicknes of glass did you use

Do you know if the frames or braces are even important. I have a 40 gallon tank that's missing the top frame is it safe to fill it up with water? Cool video.
Abven9 1 year ago
@Abven9 depends on the height and width of the tank, the width of the glass, and other techniques for strengthening the holds. Check online or with tank makers about the need for braces.

Sir did you used a Aquarium safe Silicone? you need to use a aquarium safe silicone..just to avoid poisoning the fish,,home depot sell those silicone..made by GE.
chardnj 1 year ago
@chardnj
Hiya m8, he did state at the beginning to use aquarium safe silicone, and although the silicone he was using said doors and windows on it, it was still fine as its 100% silicone and dont contain any contaminants that would affect fish/inverts etc.

You need hardened glas for a tank....
I am experianced in tanks, and I learned it is not worth building yourself!
The glass is the cash anyway....
ikelleners 1 year ago
@ikelleners Experienced huh, well you should know that you never use hardened glass for aquariums. Just a single nick in the corner could cause it to explode.
GEOPAIH1234 1 year ago
Noooooo, I was most interested in seeing how you siliconed it but for me the video always freezes at 7:12 which is like 5 seconds into the silicone step.

Can we use this design for freshwater too?

I'm making a 6ft by 3ft by 3 ft deep and the glass is 1/3 thick I believe just wondering would the glass silicone be strong
Enough or would I have to upgrade to a stronger silicone base respond if you know thanks great vid
crazyboutcamaro 1 year ago
@crazyboutcamaro Not sure, but I'd imagine that 100% silicone is 100% silicone.
1mkwiet 1 year ago
@1mkwiet
can you tell me the actual silicone bottle if so thanks
crazyboutcamaro 1 year ago
@crazyboutcamaro Due to the tank size you are doing, I recommend using Momentive 103 or 108 (depending if ya want clear or black). It has more tensile strength than standard silicone. A lot of custom tank builders use this. Also make sure you have the right thickness of glass. I wouldn't use anything smaller than 3/8" but 1/2" would be better. That being said, it's exspensive. I just spent $100 replacing a 5 foot by 2 foot piece on my tank due to a crack 3/8"
br0ken68 1 year ago
@crazyboutcamaro Your glass is NOT thick enough for the size tank that you are wanting to build. Check online for aquarium glass thickness calculators and it will give you size thickness of glass needed. I wouldn't do anything much over a 55g with 1/3 inch glass.
br0ken68 1 year ago
for a size about 30 gallons, 100cm by 35cm by about 34cm(depending on thickness of glass) what type of glass should I use? cause no sites ever tell me what type of glass. any glass will do? or should I move to something more heavy duty?

@ThomasXp not sure....there are websites that list this. I've seen them.....keep looking.

EpicShenanigansChuck 1 year ago
Why not take the glass to a glazier and have her bevel the edges? This would give you more surface area for the silicone to adhere to (=a stonger bond?). I'd also use black silicone (because I think it looks cooler) and I'd use thicker glass (especially on the bottom). It looks like you're using ~5-6mm glass. I'd use 8-10mm on the sides and then 12mm on the bottom. The thicker glass would also add surface area to the beveled edges, making for a much better bond.
TheIggy05 1 year ago
How do you know how thick your glass has to be vs how large you can make it?

hey ricket im making a little 1 gallon tank out of acrylic cause i still want a little frag tank on my desk and have my awesome 45 gallon reef set up. do you think that this would work for the acrylic? like i have it all cut just wondering is this silicon will hold together enough. i used it on my diy protein skimmer but it isn't running yet i just siliconed my sump today and will put it in tomorrow and hook everything up. if you could get back to me asap that'd b awesome.
