Brian's days with the Stones were numbered when he flitted in & out of Olympic Studios during the Banquet Sessions. Yet his quirky contributions are there for all to hear. Mellotron, guitar, sitar, tambora, piano, autoharp. In the deep recesses of the songs you can hear his input. Strange how many songs fade out with his notes...
@carrier3232 Actually that's Keith on bass. He's played bass on a few, but notable Stones tunes, like Sympathy for the Devil and Live with Me. He also played bass for the Dirty Mac during the Rock and Roll Circus with Lennon and Clapton on guitars. If he weren't such a great rhythm guitarist he would have been one hell of a bassist.
Keith Richards creates a distinctive guitar sound here using a technique he also used on "Jumpin' Jack Flash": his acoustic guitar is overdubbed several times. Says Richards: "Street Fighting Man is all acoustics. There's no electric guitar parts in it. Even the high-end lead part was through a cassette player with no limiter. Just distortion. Just two acoustics, played right into the mike, and hit very hard. There's a sitar in the back that gives the effect of the high notes on the guitar."
This song deals with civil unrest in Europe and America in 1968. There were student riots in London and Paris, and Vietnam protests in America. It was the first Stones song to make a strong political statement. Mick Jagger got the idea for the song in March, 1968 when he went to an anti-war rally at the US embassy in London and saw mounted police wading into a crowd of 25,000.
Beggars Banquet and Let it Bleed were the pinnacle of rock and roll. The Stones with Mick Taylor in 1970 were in my opinion the greatest rock and roll band of all time.
Street fighting man idea was born from street protest to oppose vietnam war popular draft among college students inside usa and paris student revolt of 1968. These song poses lots of validity about tianamen china , the coming down of berlin wall and pretty much today by the fact time magazine called the protester the character of the year!
Wow... first Stones vid I've seen by this guy that doesn't have a shitload of comments.I suppose when there are joints to roll there ain't no time to make comments.
