I spent years trying to build and play a decent shakuhachi because I could not afford one, much less enough food to transcend malnutrition whilst all my teeth rotted out. I am a terrible shakuhachi player. I battle monsters everyday and night in the Hollywood ghetto, sometimes I take a walk around Yamashiro restaurant in the hills playing terrible shakuhachi. Count your blessings. You're pretty good.
This was great; thanks for posting it. I was able to get a copy of your Leo CD "Amulet" with Sainkho Namtchylak recently after reading about it in your article in one of Zorn's Arcana books. Amulet is an amazing recording that I really enjoy and treasure. Leo should re-release "Amulet", because it is now out-of-print,; although, I look forward to the day when my Leo CD has sold out.
Ned Rothenberg is equally at home no matter what instrument he decides to express himself through. This is such a beautiful and mystical piece. If you like this, I recommend checking out his CD called Ghost Stories. Very cool.
I seriously want a honkyoku played at my funeral procession. Shakuhachi creates the most beautiful music ever.

I like the shakuhachi, it has such a mysterious sound unlike any other instrument I've heard.

I love the Shakuhachi.
Actually, I love just about any traditional flute, whether it's oriental or Indian, or First Nations.

One more question:
Is it possible to play more tones of the third oktave?
I mean more than the first one?

Shakuhachi only plays in the first 5th of the 3rd octave. Range is 2.5 octaves.
