Thank you very much for uploading this absolute gem. I can't believe I haven't seen this until now, though I was only 2 when it first aired to be fair. It is so much more interesting than I'd imagined - a good companion to Carl Sagan's "Cosmos". Sure, 4 decades later our understanding has changed on some things, but for me this is so much more about the big ideas than the empirical details. Besides you simply can't beat the delivery of these old school characters and the 70s production values.
Many thanks Paler. Watched this series as a boy and I think it gave me the basis of a world view that that has stayed with me all my days.
The thing that amazes me, though, is the small number of people that have viewed the series. Anyone out there that comes across this by chance, please, please take 57minutes out of your life and watch. you'll then find it very difficult to not watch the other 12. Truly great.
There is this type of person who spends thier entire life researching idea's, going to college, seeking more knowledge, teaching, writing, and contributing to the growth of mankind and I want to be like them!
Watched and read Cosmos ages ago, and read the Ascent of Man (the book). Going to see how he adapts it to video - thank you so much for taking the time to upload this!
Watching this for the first time. It certainly takes some concentration to get the most out of it, I suppose I'm used to passively absorbing modern TV documentaries. I've heard great things about this series so I'm going to put the effort in! Thanks for putting it up!
Thanks for posting this highly educational series by the late Jacob Bronowski, Ph.D., which together with Carl Sagan's Cosmos and Kenneth Clark's Civilization, represent the triumphant triumverate of the human genius in the field of the sciences.
@nedrodriable What a wonderful thing, to watch it as a family. They must be smart kids/like it to be able to give it the attention span it requires. [I doubt whether my stupid, rebellious *ss would have cooperated.] Thank you for taking the time to comment.
@paulascrazymom For me it was during junior college in about '75. Had a life-level impact. You're welcome. Thank you for taking the effort to comment.
I first watched this while i was baked in a dark room, with headphones on, the screaming spear section and everything that builds up to it... blew my mind, rushed next door to fetch the flatmates. Thanks for uploading this, I've nearly finished the series now. I wish more people had seen it, and had this as a basic stock of scientific historical knowledge. The story of Galileo and the inquisition still has a haunting significance - global warming etc. Cosmos last year, Ascent this, mind expanded
@icantgetnosleeep curious---what baked on? a psyc.? or just weed? - that must have been awesome in a dark room w/ headphones. Yes, I wish more people had this basic level of scientific knowledge, as you said. It would prevent at least _some_of the big, major problems in the world. And how about more people in the world today like Bronowski - I would vote for him for leader of the universe. Thanks for writing a comment.
@PalerShadeOfWhite im always trying to get my flatmate to read some of my history books - ive got loads of history books, but all on particular subjects - one day my flatmate asks if i have any books that cover "just everything really" - i said dude watch "the ascent of man" on youtube. he did, and now he borrows my books all the time, so you've brought enlightenment to one particular stoner in glasgow - nice work.
@CarloTheGambino Thank you for taking the time to tell me this story. Tell your flattie (roomie) I said hi, please. Excellent example of why I love YouTubecomments so much---my experience from California reached across the globe and touched Glascow (Scotland, home of many great sons of our fathers, not the least being Ian Anderson, born of Edinburgh). Your stoner dude story is moving and hilarious. Ever see Brad Pitt in Tarantino's "True Romance"? ▬► youtube.com/watch?v=fY3Q6SlXmZY
@bernardsteen Just happy that you enjoyed it. I hoped putting it up would allow new people to see it if they never had, or those who wanted to see again. You're very welcome.
Thank you very much for uploading this wonderful documentary, I watched it all in my childhood, and now sit here in keen anticipation of watching it again.
@slaphaddalztick You're welcome. I know what you mean, I was overjoyed when I found the series a few weeks ago. I know you will like it again. I watched it first when I was about 18 in the1974-75 time frame.
... Aha! Evolution in action @ 07:30... I always wondered where Simon Cowell's 'high-waisted' trousers came from :D
(& on a more serious note... and echoing other's comments... A super doc with super "Floydian" bits! :D)

A few years ago, a friend of the family lent me the Bronowski's book to accompany the series.
Found the book really great, but I wasn't even born when the series went out - so big thanks for uploading!

This is the greatest show in the history of television. Nothing has ever come near it in profundity, seriousness and grandeur.
