  • this man can practically break the laws of movement

  • But he said he'll slow it down for us...

  • Which DvD is this from and what example is it? Is it from Power Licks?

  • @Shmucko21 No, it must be Power Solos. The reason is because he teaches solos in it, so it must be it.

  • Thats a beautiful guitar sound he has there.

  • simplesmente o melhro musico que o mundo ja teve, um mestre nao so nas 6 cordas , mais como pessoa, o mundo perdeu um gênio

  • Rusty Cooley who?????

  • @MachineHeadDissent

A mindblowingly awesome guitarist. Don't be a smartass.

  • The beauty behind the shredding... just WOW!

  • Shawn deserved better quality videos,'' Now it will never happen unless he put another instructional DVD out after this one i don't know?.. Im looking for shawns sickest guitar licks i seen them once on this DVD or maybe it was on a VHS? That one drummer dude ''Brains'' made a DVD instructional,'' On the cover it says'' Brains has possibly made the worst drum instructional DVD ever,' Something like that? I think he slipped buckethead some acid once? Brain is a straight up fucking genius!

  • what's amazing about this lick is played slow it has a beautiful melody to it LOL. Shawn was the best.

  • I don't know which is scarier SLOW or FAST !!!! What a beautiful melody that song has.My personal favorite

  • well, maybe i can learn the chords....

  • shawn's favorite comedy movies are speed kills 1 and 2 and speed lives 1 2

  • @emmanuelrodulfo LOL... Shawn Lane's favourite stand-up comedian is Tiago Della Vega... :P

  • @havik914 hahahha

  • Why do they have these "lessons" when nobody else can play them but him?

  • @eatyosandwich because in many many Centuries from now a prodigy will be able to play it or come close to playing it.

  • it looks so innocent and easy when he plays it slow...

  • i love how he's talking to us like he's just chilling out .. no big deal .. the way he is playing looks like he does this shit in his sleep!

  • that has to be some of the most intricate and complicated phrasing I've ever heard.

  • does anyone know what kind of guitar that is? it doesn't look like a vigier.

  • @Jcam1sfly

    It's a custom Ibanez Ghostrider.

  • @0ptriX THANK YOU! I've been searching forever for that :D

  • puts maalsteen 2 shame!!!!!!!!!!1111

  • His stretching is absolutely stunning! Do you know how hard that is to do? Even with long fingers? Ridiculous!

  • @4lifeguitar Yeah I have really big, long fingers, and it's still hard to do stretches and be "accurate" with it. lol

  • Speed want to kill your mama guys..........

  • pure poetry.

  • anyone know his reverb settings?

  • Yes, he had 3 amps. One in real time, the second 100% delayed for 5 milliseconds and the third 100% delayed for 50 milliseconds.

I know it's insane. I think it's the only explanation for his awesome sound.

  • holy shit hes playing what would be a crazy tapping lick all with one hand. Shawn Lane is the man

  • did he have that ghostrider modified? Looks like there are some switches on the upper horn. Possibly he got coil tap and/or phaser switches put in.

  • Anyone have notation or tablature of this?

    Thanks!

  • the course sounds like some super Nintendo game melody lol

  • god damnit..

  • ive been trying to find this guy to prove t my friend that the guy from dragon force is NOT the fastest nor the best

  • you didn't have to find shawn lane for that, haha

rusty cooley, jason becker, paul gilbert, greg howe, allan holdsworth, frank gambale, buckethead, but shawn owned them all

  • ye lol shawn lane is definately THE fastest

  • Id agree with that bar Jason

  • didn't catch that?

  • you said Shawn owned all I agreed bar Jason becker

  • sorry, my english isn't that great, bar means?

  • bar means apart from

  • ah, okey I see.

disagreeing, but that's just my opinion

  • dont blame you dude... Shawn is absolutely amazing

  • everyone except becker. becker style wasnt only so much more different than lanes but it was also just as amazing as what shawn could do. both are on the same level apart from everyone else.

  • shawn lane technique is insane man. the best technique ever applied to the guitar. he could do all styles, and when i mean all, i mean EVERYTHING. he could blaze fast on the piano playing classical music.

  • I would disagree on a technical level. shawn lane had a physical advantage over anyone; he was completely ambidextrous and had a hyper-active nervous system. I have more theories about his anatomy that I wont get into on the youtube comments section.

  • well i i didnt really mean the technical level perse. but jasons compositions were more open and epic i think. shawn has him on skill tho.

  • mmm Im more into fusion than baroque, so I tend to lean towards shawn :)

  • baroque?? jason had like...ONE baroque piece haha.

seriously listen to songs like serrana and air and the end of the beginning and altitudes by jason. each is just so epicly beautiful. i think u'd be quite impressed by air.

  • already heard them

    I still like lane moar

  • i think shawn has god on skill....

  • ya thats what i said..jason has him on composition though.

  • Comment removed

  • No please do.

    hahah

  • lol, he wasnt on THOSE sorts of steroids :)

  • arsguitarrica

He was taking steroids cause he was seriously sick -_-

  • @SweeetPicker I know, I am just saying that they COULD have helped him gain his ability. I was only jesting about it, quit being so serious.

  • No, they couldn't have helped him. The reason is the type of steriods he was being given don't make you stronger.

  • Oh, yes ... I have to improve my english.

  • you don't need to find shawn lane to prove any of your friends that the dragon force dude is the best pick up anyone Guthrie Govan,Buckethead,Paul Gilbert,John Petrucci,Allan Holdsworth,Frank Gambale.

  • " i slow it down froyou"...hahaha

    Best musician ..... RIP

  • "....Broken down and slow" he says.....

What an awesome artist we've lost.

  • GREAT SNAKES!

  • Comment removed

  • He's got ALOT of delay and reverb doesn't he?

RIP Shawn.. you were and always going to be amazing <3

  • He's playing something different when he slows it down. Too bad as I have to learn this song for a test :P

  • its amazing he can keep track of all those notes...they all seem to blend together for him as chords or something...he's an alien...or he was...RIP

  • Playing fast is one thing, but how did he remember all these odd number groupings ???

    But that's aside.

  • because they are not just scale notes....they mean something to him and to the song....if you play just some random notes that dont mean anything ofcourse you arent going to remember them.

  • But that doesnt explain anything-

  • you dont understand....

  • Actually there aren't really that many odd groupings in this sections. And I think odd groupings come pretty natural to him.

  • where the hell are the tabs? please I really just want to learn the theme no way i can touch lane he was a god!

  • the tabs are in the instructional book.

  • it just sounds amazing

  • My hat's off to anyone who can tab stuff like this. I feel like Shawn's fast stuff is so far outside of the box that most of us can't really comprehend what he's doing some of the time. Or maybe it's just me. It's definitely not your Gilbert-style, 3 note per string kind of alternate picking stuff.

  • so agreed! tried to tab out the hole get you back, but Shawn used so hard and unusual rhythmic groups of notes, that it just was impossible for me to tab out..

  • you are a talentless moron if you think like that

  • watch my videos before making a statement like that i'm not great by any means but i can play good enough to know that shawn lanes playing was far beyond that of gilbert or any of the "virtuosos" of today

  • your videos show nothing but you covering some crappy new metal artists songs, don't even try and pull that one. and to say lanes playing was far beyond any of the virtuosos today is a pretty dumb thing to say as well.

  • different strokes for different folks i think is the saying? you have your opinion and i have mine i like metal and that's fine if you don't but don't go bashing me because my opinion isn't identical to yours. i listen to and play a lot more than just "crappy new metal artists" i'm not going to argue over something so meaningless.

  • A monster player...

  • Bloody hell, Ive got to play this for an exam next year!! Thats gonna take a bit of practise...

  • I'm working on a tab for this song. I've got 95% of the lead part covered. The only thing that's missing is what is presented in THIS particular video + I need to fix the fingerings here and there. Are you interested in my tab?

  • Quite possibly!! I have to play it in my final performance for my music degree. Ive been given some tab from a Guitar Techniques magazine but I dont think it's very accurate. I cant play at the moment due to wrist problems (possibly carpal tunnel...) but Id still like to see what tab you have done :) Thankyou very much!! I'll PM you about it...

  • To be honest mate, I think that transcription is about as accurate as your gonna get, it was guthrie govan who tabbed that out and I think hes more qualified than most to do this song being such an uncomprehendable player himself!!

  • Absolutely agreed! Im a huge Guthrie fan so I couldnt agree more!! I may be improvising bits of the solo though since the strentches in it would cause my wrist a lot more problems...

  • lol, same here man, im playing this for my HSC next year...

  • Best of luck mate!! Ive got the main themes down but the solos are going to take a lot of work. All the best :)

  • haha cheerz ill need it, you to man, kick ass for your music performance for your degree or watever haha..lol do it for SHAWN!

  • Actually, the tab from the guitar techniques magazine is VERY accurate, made by Mr. Guthrie Govan himself. This particular part is a little different fingering-wise but sounds correct. Best of luck to both of you!

  • think of it like this..

after a while it would be possible to play it. maybe not as fast.

but you would never be able to write a solo like that. shawn had so much feeling.

  • well i get what your sayin bro, but dont limit us like that :) shawn was an inspiration we should all try to push the boundries of guitar like he did, melodicly and techniqly.

  • I like your attitude! That's how it should be.

  • I just threw my guitar in the fire pit!

    He is bad ass!

  • easy stuff (sarcasm)

  • k just put my guitar up on ebay

  • I'm going to put mine now :)

  • you don't hear aany sound from the pick :O

  • that was shawn's prefered style.

he says he'd usually go for weaker pickups to get a much smoother tone.

    its nice.

  • I think if I practiced hard enough, I could play this at half-speed of his slowed down "demonstration" speed. Awesome tone as well.

  • I could practice nothing but this for months and still not be able to play it like he does... Pure GENIUS! Could you imagine his talent today had he not died?

  • beautiful melody

  • 0:17 - 0:22 is insane. and it sounds amazing.

  • it sounds beautiful slowed down

  • I love the chords he does at the end.

  • anyone have the tabs?

and is this from power licks or power solos?

  • Power Solos.

  • anyone know if this is from power licks or power solos?

and does anyone have the tabs or notation for this, i can prolly transcribe it but if someone's got it it would be a lot faster

  • slow down shawn fuck i can almost transcribe it.FUCK

  • Genious, pure genious!

  • That lick at 0:20 is just....holy shit!

  • totally dude! he does that sick-ass "slide/sweep" thing.

  • Slide sweep? It's a minor7 legato string skipping arpeggio. Popular with players like Greg Howe. :)

Shawn very rarely "sweeped". He said in an interview it's an abused technique that has undue attention. He is quite right; 90% of everyone who sweeps do not do it because of a melody/tone variation; but purely for the right hand gimmick.

  • Wow, Shawn's attitude towards sweeping was pretty much the same as mine then. Recently I said that I think sweeping is a deceitful technique - many guitarists use purely to fuel their own egos to make everyone think they're "all that" when they are not, and use it where it isn't necessary. Guitarists like Gambale, Govan and Petrucci use sweeping tastefully but most guitarists nowadays don't. Paul Gilbert also never caught on to sweeping - he stuck with string skipping.

  • Well it's different. I'd prefer Guthrie's attack on this one over Shawn's, I think no technique is deceitfull or anything. The thing is, sweeping sounds different than skipping, so it's good to have them both at your disposal. Why not do both? Gambale made it into an artform indeed. It's never 'necessary' IMO, you can do pretty much anything with skipping. But sweeping is easier in most cases.

  • Of course, Gambale and others use sweeping to create music and don't get me wrong that guy can sweep.. but I just get the impression that modern bands use sweeping so much to try and impress rather than for musical purposes.

  • Well I know what you mean I guess. I'm getting a little fed up with those neoclassical guitarist but not so much because they sweep, but because of their lack of phrasing and lack of other harmonic ideas than ripping A minor arps over A minor chords and shredding in harmonic minor. The sweeping technique is valid IMO. Gambale can sweep yeah, he can play pretty much anything with that technique and sounds incredibly articulate!

  • it is an A major pentatonic or f sharp minor pentatonic with little exceptions (G sharp) some notes are doubled. This is single-string-picking with some hammer-ons, no arpeggio anywhere, neither as a technique nor as a chord analysis. The speed is awesome.

  • In the key of f# it's a pure minor7th. Key oof A yes it's a A maj pentatonic. :) There are two notes double up but in octaves.

It is technically an arpeggio, it is string skipping from the g to e string - 3 notes per string legato with odd picking. I know because I play it all the time [warm-ups] and it's a very popular shape used my jazz guitarists.

  • Forgive the typos, I had my guitar on my lap heh. :)

  • Oh yeh check out some of Denis Taaffe's vids here on Youtube! Hey from Andy!

  • Shawn Lane: Your smile makes me smile, my names Andy Pryor and my teacher Denis Taafe lent me his vid... I'm only 17 and I'll probably study the damn booklet to the REH video til I die! rest in peace

  • shawn lane is a freaky god... rest in peace... o en pedasos...

  • he is a freaking god but i actually liked it slower O_O

  • Satisfies my speed tooth! Shredding the way I always wished it would sound(and knew it could)

  • I love that look on his face about half-way through the solo. It's like "damn, I'm so fuckin' good".

  • No, Shawn was a very humble man. He had no ego to speak of.

  • with that illness and all he was a very humble man, you can see it in his eyes

  • thank god for this video. I'm working on tabbing this song at the moment and i listened to the last solo and thought WTF? At least here he slows it down

  • King of guitar.

  • wow, shawn really does hav the most amazing stretches ever, what some people could only pull off using 2 hands he could do with one lol

  • I love that chord sequence at then end too, what a talent he was.

  • I agree completely. "Get You Back" is the best display of pure beautiful fusion genius.

This is my "go to" song for when there are loads of dumbasses who say "He is just a speed freak".

  • wow

  • DAMN!!! This guy is Truely amazing...

  • yeah! fuckin' right

  • To be honest, it's even more disgusting when he slows it down, because you're like, "WTF there's no way he played all those notes".

  • Wow just when I thought that I couldn't be more humbled by this guy's chops... holy f-ing crap.

  • that's a beautiful song..perfect blend of speed chops and taste

  • That made me wanna shoot myself

    Holy shit
