shawn lane technique is insane man. the best technique ever applied to the guitar. he could do all styles, and when i mean all, i mean EVERYTHING. he could blaze fast on the piano playing classical music.
I would disagree on a technical level. shawn lane had a physical advantage over anyone; he was completely ambidextrous and had a hyper-active nervous system. I have more theories about his anatomy that I wont get into on the youtube comments section.
baroque?? jason had like...ONE baroque piece haha.
seriously listen to songs like serrana and air and the end of the beginning and altitudes by jason. each is just so epicly beautiful. i think u'd be quite impressed by air.
you don't need to find shawn lane to prove any of your friends that the dragon force dude is the best pick up anyone Guthrie Govan,Buckethead,Paul Gilbert,John Petrucci,Allan Holdsworth,Frank Gambale.
because they are not just scale notes....they mean something to him and to the song....if you play just some random notes that dont mean anything ofcourse you arent going to remember them.
My hat's off to anyone who can tab stuff like this. I feel like Shawn's fast stuff is so far outside of the box that most of us can't really comprehend what he's doing some of the time. Or maybe it's just me. It's definitely not your Gilbert-style, 3 note per string kind of alternate picking stuff.
so agreed! tried to tab out the hole get you back, but Shawn used so hard and unusual rhythmic groups of notes, that it just was impossible for me to tab out..
watch my videos before making a statement like that i'm not great by any means but i can play good enough to know that shawn lanes playing was far beyond that of gilbert or any of the "virtuosos" of today
your videos show nothing but you covering some crappy new metal artists songs, don't even try and pull that one. and to say lanes playing was far beyond any of the virtuosos today is a pretty dumb thing to say as well.
different strokes for different folks i think is the saying? you have your opinion and i have mine i like metal and that's fine if you don't but don't go bashing me because my opinion isn't identical to yours. i listen to and play a lot more than just "crappy new metal artists" i'm not going to argue over something so meaningless.
I'm working on a tab for this song. I've got 95% of the lead part covered. The only thing that's missing is what is presented in THIS particular video + I need to fix the fingerings here and there. Are you interested in my tab?
Quite possibly!! I have to play it in my final performance for my music degree. Ive been given some tab from a Guitar Techniques magazine but I dont think it's very accurate. I cant play at the moment due to wrist problems (possibly carpal tunnel...) but Id still like to see what tab you have done :) Thankyou very much!! I'll PM you about it...
To be honest mate, I think that transcription is about as accurate as your gonna get, it was guthrie govan who tabbed that out and I think hes more qualified than most to do this song being such an uncomprehendable player himself!!
Absolutely agreed! Im a huge Guthrie fan so I couldnt agree more!! I may be improvising bits of the solo though since the strentches in it would cause my wrist a lot more problems...
Actually, the tab from the guitar techniques magazine is VERY accurate, made by Mr. Guthrie Govan himself. This particular part is a little different fingering-wise but sounds correct. Best of luck to both of you!
well i get what your sayin bro, but dont limit us like that :) shawn was an inspiration we should all try to push the boundries of guitar like he did, melodicly and techniqly.
I could practice nothing but this for months and still not be able to play it like he does... Pure GENIUS! Could you imagine his talent today had he not died?
Slide sweep? It's a minor7 legato string skipping arpeggio. Popular with players like Greg Howe. :)
Shawn very rarely "sweeped". He said in an interview it's an abused technique that has undue attention. He is quite right; 90% of everyone who sweeps do not do it because of a melody/tone variation; but purely for the right hand gimmick.
Wow, Shawn's attitude towards sweeping was pretty much the same as mine then. Recently I said that I think sweeping is a deceitful technique - many guitarists use purely to fuel their own egos to make everyone think they're "all that" when they are not, and use it where it isn't necessary. Guitarists like Gambale, Govan and Petrucci use sweeping tastefully but most guitarists nowadays don't. Paul Gilbert also never caught on to sweeping - he stuck with string skipping.
Well it's different. I'd prefer Guthrie's attack on this one over Shawn's, I think no technique is deceitfull or anything. The thing is, sweeping sounds different than skipping, so it's good to have them both at your disposal. Why not do both? Gambale made it into an artform indeed. It's never 'necessary' IMO, you can do pretty much anything with skipping. But sweeping is easier in most cases.
Of course, Gambale and others use sweeping to create music and don't get me wrong that guy can sweep.. but I just get the impression that modern bands use sweeping so much to try and impress rather than for musical purposes.
Well I know what you mean I guess. I'm getting a little fed up with those neoclassical guitarist but not so much because they sweep, but because of their lack of phrasing and lack of other harmonic ideas than ripping A minor arps over A minor chords and shredding in harmonic minor. The sweeping technique is valid IMO. Gambale can sweep yeah, he can play pretty much anything with that technique and sounds incredibly articulate!
it is an A major pentatonic or f sharp minor pentatonic with little exceptions (G sharp) some notes are doubled. This is single-string-picking with some hammer-ons, no arpeggio anywhere, neither as a technique nor as a chord analysis. The speed is awesome.
In the key of f# it's a pure minor7th. Key oof A yes it's a A maj pentatonic. :) There are two notes double up but in octaves.
It is technically an arpeggio, it is string skipping from the g to e string - 3 notes per string legato with odd picking. I know because I play it all the time [warm-ups] and it's a very popular shape used my jazz guitarists.
Shawn Lane: Your smile makes me smile, my names Andy Pryor and my teacher Denis Taafe lent me his vid... I'm only 17 and I'll probably study the damn booklet to the REH video til I die! rest in peace
