  • 8:00 How was that a strange wager? It didnt know so it wagered less.

  • you can see Ken continuously buzzing in...or at least trying to.

  • This is facinatig but i would think a conputers reaction time to answering a question would be an advantage.

  • 3:58 "Yes.... ffs".

  • Screw Watson, a computer doesn't play jeopordy.

  • @SeanAndy1000 Actually, try spelling "Jeopardy" right next time

  • allow the computer to be the doctor. Not the doctors. Good job when people have heart attacks from bad medication IBM!

  • @gohan40129 ..obviously the computers would be assisting the doctors, not *be* the doctors. Could be a hugely helpful diagnostic tool and even a research aide.

  • @gohan40129 it's not about beeing the doctor..it's about scanning large amount of data in a blink to assist the doctor

  • He didn't shake hands with Watson..

  • skynet

  • watson may answer the questions right but sometimes i question some of the other options for answers

  • I'm not entirely sure that this is a fair competition as Watson can compute answers and respond at near light speed. "He" also has over a trillion more neural connections than the average human brain...

  • Watson better stay out of the SOPA system.

  • Watson?

    Where is Sarah Conner?????

  • Something like Watson could also be a huge step forward for AI.

  • Watson may not yet be perfected, but it sure is clever..

  • I for one welcome our computer overlords

  • Love the Narnia question: I agree with Watson, it's definitely The Lion XD

  • Canada, America's hat!

  • Game starts at 2:45

  • terminator IBM

  • Comment removed

  • I'm always really curious about what the contestants talk about with Alex once the show is over

  • I dunno, Watson, what IS Toronto?

  • Dr. David Ferrucci absolutely genius ...

  • how come the 2nd and 3rd answers sometimes are so wild

  • It's a cool tool, But man will still and always be better than machine. The computer was focus on one thing recalling info and analysing the problem will the men were multitasking etc. (wow this computer is fast! , my belly feel funny! ) The CPU "Watson" has no emotion no feelings. It's a good for teaching, analysis and Medical field. Hats off to IBM. What would be really good if Watson can play other games from Board Game to Sim. consider the picture 'Stealth' able to learn from the internet

  • This is nothing, this machine is just learning how to talk. They have computers that can predict what you'll do every hour of the day with stunning accuracy. Cyber big-brother is coming.

  • Fucking cheaters; Ken's button is obviously sticky.

  • Game starts at 2:45

  • "What is toronto" Watson be trollin'

  • @StupidFatFag shut up, stupid fat fag.

  • @testiclecrusher2 shut ur mom up

  • Will it blend?

  • Watson took my job.

  • Did Watson feel sorry for his opponents so threw the last question? :D. Ok, not so sorry - only about 1/36 of its total lol

  • Traitorously, i find myself rooting or the machine lol

  • Yeah, but will it play Crysis..?

  • I wish Watson got the question about Haemophilia right. I wanted to hear him say it. "What is Hi-Moe-Feel-Ya"

  • Hey guys, if you're into game shows check out this new Internet game show that anyone can play and win just by watching the video clues. The show is called Cash Clues

  • @cashclues Don't make me call Watson on you.

  • Toronto LMAO

  • I love the way it pronounces the money bit "for $400!!"

  • the 3 who dissliked this feared the vision of the AI domination over humankind

  • 8:05 Watson's sad face :(

  • @RadicalMassacre makes me want to hug him... somehow...

  • @Snaggbash2000 You're not the only one. And imagining Dr. Watson while I watch this doesn't help either XD

  • Watson seems to really like hedge hogpodge,

  • What is Toronto?????

I for one welcome our new computer overlords.

  • 8:40 "fuck you watson"

  • HOW THE FUCK. TORONTO???? HOW IN THE FUCK. A SUPER COMPUTER DOESN'T HAVE A FUCKING MAP OF USA? FUCK YOU FUTURAMA

  • @PhoeniX999R Watson is a good machine alright, but i did laugh at that answer.

  • LOL, apologists.May you get a promotion within your beloved Corporation soon.

  • 0:18 I reeeeally don't like where this is going. Imagine a computer analyzing everything you type and coming to the conclusion that you are an enemy of the state. I imagine that the department of precrime has already placed an order the IBM.

  • "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that."

  • GLaDOS

  • @GreatYeazy This shit will make us do tests with portals......

  • This may be funny, however it was IBM that designed the Hollerith machine (first computer) to assist the Nazis in the totallisation of the european Jewry for the industrialized genocide of 11 million Jews in WW2. Look it up. IBM are scum, you should all be very concerned. They are guilty of assisting genocide.

  • @derrenmac Everyone disliked Jews during WW2, they were the equivalent of gays in current years, they just gave Germany punchcard readers, they gave the US punchcard readers, and once the US entered the war, they stopped upkeep on German punchcard readers. They were just doing their job, and had no idea about the Holocaust, just that Germany, like the US, had containment camps set up.

  • "And the wager, how much you gonna lose-oh you sneak." Lol, He sounded so hopeful for a second.

  • sneaky bastard wagering only $947

  • He didn't shake hands with Watson. This guy is rasist or sumtin.

  • @thegoodhen Oh, Chip.

  • Fascinating - there's a Toronto in Illinois, although it's closer to Springfield than Chicago. (There's also a Toronto in... basically every midwest state.)

At least Watson was smart enough to figure it was probably wrong?

  • Watson couldn't even guess a city in the US? What a dumbass... Great now he is probably reading this and plotting my death

  • @aranttila1241 Toronto is a US city....

  • @Brett9897 Not a large one... When you think Toronto you think Canada

  • @aranttila1241 That has no bearing on my response. You said "Watsion couldn't even guess a city in the US?" Technically it did. Anyways the reason it didn't come up with Chicago as most confident is because the question used the word "named" and all of the evidence used the word "renamed". Also there was evidence that said Toronto was a U.S. city. "US and Canadian MLB teams", in the list was "Toronto Blue Jays".

  • @aranttila1241 Obviously as humans we understand "and" to really mean "or" in that semantic case but a computer cannot distinguish the difference.

  • @Brett9897 But that is the point of Watson. It is supposed to figure out what language would normally obscure.

  • 3 people got pwned by watson...

  • Ken Jennings looks piiiiiissssed.

  • I love hearing Watson say "Hedgehog-podge"

  • Damn this thing might be able to answer any question you have instantly someday. As in that you can actually talk to it. Pretty sweet!

  • 8:10 Watson is a wussy

  • Does he correct himself after incorrect answers?

  • @havee3333333 i don't think he saves all the answers on the questions. that would be way too much, but i do think that it changes algorithms, so that if algorithm A failed it saves that algorithm A isn't the way to go on certain questions

  • our tech getting ahead of us is one way of looking at it. do you how close we are to a chip in are head giving us ten fold the mental capacity! nano tech that would make known disease a thing of the past and mortality a choice. google humanityplus.

    a conscience required.

  • At around 6:20, doesnt it look like they just kissed and hugged? Hasn't the interviewer heard of personal space?

  • So yes, it can play jeopardy. but......will it blend?

  • Toronto Toronto Watson Thats wrong the correct answer is Chicago the airports are O'Hara and Midway

  • haha;-) Watson takes no risk because he need no money ;-)))

  • "Oh you sneak." :D

Either Watson had doubts indeed... or he is smart enough to troll us. :D

  • @vanishy0urself He has no need for money sonwhy risk loosing-)

  • never knew Toronto was a us city lol

  • what is the point of life?....hah answer that

  • @sgsgy "Life is the ability of an organism to perform biological processes of self-preservation and reproduction. There is no purpose in life other than fear of the alternative, it is the ever-present threat of death that continually prolongs this futile endeavor of the living."

  • I just realized that Google and IBM have the potential of becoming Skynet in our future.... or they will create Issac Assimov's Multivax

  • how can anyone bealive this

  • watson the shadow broker of RL

  • Watson is cheating.

  • "Toronto?" Ha!

  • I know people like Watson. They mean no harm, they are polite, but you just want to punch them for being successful. Stupid Flanders.

  • I like how Watson trolls which his final answer. He knows he can't lose.

  • Is it just me, or does Brad give Watson the finger at 8:43?

  • ken jennings is so mad he cant answer

  • i think its really fascinating, I dont think its scary though

  • lol toronto

  • Games starts at 2:46 btw.

  • 3 people didn't like this because they ain't as smart as Watson.

  • the air pressure answering system on Watson is too fast for the speed of a human thumb pressing the button...

If that was fixed earlier this would have been a more fair challenge for ken and brad!

  • I was half expecting Watson's final jeopardy answers to be a picture of a super computer defecating on Trebek's grave.

  • @NoAhMeDlEy BWAHAHAHAHA

  • True, Watson didn't get every question right, some so far from right that it confuses us how it could get it so wrong. It's just hard to understand how a computer thinks, much different from a human, for example: If you asked it math questions it would never get them wrong and depending on the math question the human players would never be able to figure it out in their life times.

Something else, if they gave all these questions to Watson at once, he could give the answer out in a minute.

  • Whoever says that Toronto isn't a US city and Watson should look at the US map, I think you have to look at the US map instead. Here is a short list of Toronto, US: Toronto, OH; Toronto, KS; Toronto, IA.

  • @Oyamada13 Do those Torontos have 2 airports?

  • @thenutintheushanka18 The point isn't if these Toronto have an airport or not. The question that everyone is asking in the comments are if there is a Toronto in the US.

  • The technology is interesting, but let's keep one thing in mind....the computer that takes up an entire large room, and needs two giant self-contained air-conditioning units (to prevent overheating), to come close to mimicking what your brain does (which only takes up the space in your head....oh and we only use 10% of it's capabilities).

This just makes me have even more respect for the complexities of the human brain.

  • @EmptyBottleTherapies The idea that we only use 10% of our brain is a myth that just won't die. We use almost all of our brain. The 10% myth is bad science from decades ago, long since proven wrong.

As for the size of the computer ... back in the 50's, computers that would be considered absolutely primitive by today's standards took up entire rooms.

  • @TriscuitFan Really? I wasn't aware of this, do you have any links? My understanding is that YES we use about 85 - 95 % of our brain, relatively, but at any given time we are using typicaly 10% of it when thinking, or moving.

And yes the computers in 1950 were the same size of rooms, and 60 years later they still can't match the complexities and miracle of the human brain which is based off of chemical transfers. My statement isn't a "knock" on technology, just a commendation of the brain.

  • @EmptyBottleTherapies The human brain doesn't use 85-95% of itself for thinking, rather, it is most commonly working at that capacity. True, a large part of the brain is not used for thinking, it is actually used to transport blood to the brain and to keep the brain temperature at the right levels. Watson is simply a larger model of the human brain, albeit with the actual processing units linked differently together.

  • @EmptyBottleTherapies I understand what you're trying to say, the human brain is a ridiculously complex thing. This is the only time i've seen technology rival it by using the same sort of thought process, and i have to say, that's pretty awesome!

  • Oh, you sneak.... Watson could have wagered $0.00

  • ken looks so pissed...

  • its amazing how far computer technology is coming (as an aspiring computer scientist) it staggers my mind how to develop a machine that can interpret something as irregular as language to a precision roughly as good as a human.

  • Google "watson jeopardy" or look on youtube for info if you get tired of seeing all of these technically challenged comments/whining about Watson's "unfair" advantages. The supercomputer did not need any advantage over the humans except for speed, it answered enough questions accurately and fast enough to beat Ken & Brad. If it needed even more speed then IBM could have just doubled the number of systems.

  • @Exestenz

it doesn't know what a world is. it knows 1 and 0 and out of the many choices it chose the best possible response from the data it had generated.

Interesting point you bring up there, because within our brains, that is essentially what a single neuron is doing, albeit on a chemical analogue system rather than digital. I doubt a single neuron has any more concept of a "world" than Watson does. It is the sum of those millions of neurons that allows us to understand the world.

  • I love Jeopardy!. I have watched it for 20 years or so. I think it's great they have got a cpu so close to domination of the game. Quite ingenious work and they should all be proud, but this is really just a 15 minutes commercial for IBM. It's not like other companies have a cpu to do this too, but those 5-8 minutes of interviews and clips makes for obvious propaganda.

  • from audio before it could answer. Even OCR would be too fast, like a micro-second.

  • Additionally, I agree with the bogus him pressing the button faster than the other 2 contestants, and it IS hard to think of the answer while the question is being read to you. The computer has two unfair advantages. I think it should get the question 2 seconds before Alex is finished reading the question. I like how Watson was immediately chasing the daily double and found all 3 of them, that was another little rip off. One last thing, Watson should have to HEAR the question, and interpret it,

  • "Watson, does god exist, and what's his address?" I wonder what they programmed him to say?!!!!

Okay, that's not quite the answering system he operates on, but he could EASILY be adjusted to answer normal questions and complete equations and move to other parts of a room operating a robot that is "him". I guess Sony's Aibo has got a lot of catching up to do! However, to put things drastically into perspective, what it the monetary value of a 180 pound person, all the chemicals, vs. Waton's cost?

  • Toronto isn't a US city. If this thing cant read a map then how the fuck did it beat the two best Jeopardy players in the world?

  • @pokemonmaster08 the computer doesn't know what a city is. it doesn't know what a world is. it knows 1 and 0 and out of the many choices it chose the best possible response from the data it had generated in a small amount of time and then lost a small amount of money as the chances that the 1's and 0's would match up for that question were low.

  • @pokemonmaster08 Actually, there are a lot of "Toronto"s in the US. They're just not well known.

  • @almightytora True that. There's a Toronto in Australia for crying out loud.

  • Ever seen the movie Terminator. The beginning.

  • fag hippies

  • billions of dollars invested into a supercomputer and it thinks Toronto is a US city... x_x

  • @greenboarder89 that was hilarious then he only wagered 947. i love how all of his daily doubles are random numbers too

  • I noticed Trebek was getting snarky.

Watson should have gone Sean Connery on him.

  • 8:41 ken flips off Watson

  • lol i can see Ken getting kinda pissed. xD

  • You can tell that Ken is getting frustrated towards the end. He can't beat Watson to the buzz in lol.

  • This just proves how amazing the human mind is.

  • People aren't getting that it isn't even about "smarter" or "faster"... it's the fact that a computer is taking questions phrased in unusual ways and understanding them. THAT is the big deal. That's the part that's never been done before, and it's why Jeopardy was chosen instead of a standard quiz show format.

  • It takes a room of computers to do this. Humans have been doing it for much better (just look at Ken and Brad) for much longer. Gives you a real awe and amazement for the power of the human brain...

  • "Alex, this unit has an inquiry."

    "What is it Watson?"

"Do these units have a soul?"

  • Watson looks eerily like the monolith from 2001: a space odyssey, to bad the voice isn't as scary as HAL 9000, that would be really intimidating lol

  • @Jimbol8472 I can just hear it (I refuse to personify this usurper of humanity) saying "I'm afraid I can't do that Alex..."

    :shudder:

  • Where is skynet?

  • if people become reliant on computers such a watson, they will be prime targets for hacking. Interesting concept though.

  • My Computational Linguistics prof spent this whole morning talking about this Watson. He said it's quite a lot of ad hoc going into this, and the achievement is not so "breakthrough" to researchers in the field. But for practical purposes I think Watson is quite good isn't it? Say it can help the doctor generating all possible hypotheses given the symptoms..

  • For everyone hung up on Watson reaction time to press the buzzer remember, this is not about Jeopardy! It is about testing a new computerized system that can understand language on the level of humans. The fact that Watson does not get the answer right with high confidence every single time is a testament to how hard this process is. Something we do without conscious thought requires a room of computers to attempt it.

  • @Dacoda23 Which is why the human brain is the most sophisticated "computer" there is! :)

  • robotic reactions > human reaction, not fair because of robotic computed buzz ins. Not fair.

  • watson didn't win because it's smarter. it won because it's a robot and was able to buzz in the precise instant the question was finished. this is crap.

  • @xde0mega u know what ken or brad should have done is like just instantaneously buzz in after the question has been said just so they get the chance to answer. they get a few seconds to think about it then too. some of those questions were damn ez too, but the damn comp kept stealing em.

  • stop talking!!!!!! play the stupid game!!!

  • watson has a real problem with dates and cities, which means the programmers didn't give it enough examples of those things. it can't make the association to cities in certain countries or know that events were pivotal to certain decades. watson is only as smart as his programmers

  • @ceej1980jeanne I don't think you know how Watson is programmed therefore you cannot assume it is ONLY as smart as its programmers. The algorithmic equations that are in Watson are so complex that only the brightest individuals could follow. When these equations are combined to formulate an idea, Watson is using all of these algorithms at once. I am NOT saying I know how it is programmed I am simply saying that it IS FASTER and POSSIBLY smarter than a human.

  • giving Watson the finger eh???

  • @f3rn4ndrum5 There will be robotic justice for this. boop.

  • I'd love to hear what they were discussing at the end of the show.

  • The real question is... when does Watson get the questions sent to him? I know they send him a text string with the question in it, but when does that get sent to him? Is it sent one word at a time so Watson can start narrowing down the possibilities as the question is read, or does he get it all at once at the end of the reading? Does he get it all at once at the beginning of the reading? Technically a human can read the question on the board faster than Alex can read it aloud. What's fair?

  • @Luieburger they send the whole question at once, when alex starts reading it- watson has the same amount of time to come up with an answer as the other guys. thats whats so amazing about his computing power, to filter through the branches of word association to find out what the appropriate answer is- in about 3-5 seconds

  • @Luieburger Exactly. I want more details on the timing of the whole process. All they've really said is that it has to buzz in with a mechanical device. First, as you ask, when and how are the answers sent to it? Second, at what moment are all the contestants allowed to buzz in? If it is at the end of Alex's speech, well, I think might just raise other questions.

  • @dalpaugh Buttons are locked-out until Alex finishes reading the question.

  • 8:42 my eyes popped wide open because it looked like the guy gave Watson the finger. (Middle finger).

  • "oh, you sneak..." LOL!!! trebek

  • It's still far away from being AI, but the basis for crossreferencing has been laid down.

Next step would no doubt be google trying to copy its algorythm for searches.

  • So of all the millions of dollars that went into Watson's development, probably the $18 that went into allowing it to buzz in faster than its human counterparts was the best spent.

  • @Pjwentz Haha, probably. I wonder how and when the buzz-in is allowed.

  • @shinunotenshi they showed a clip- watson has control of a buzzer, when it has a high enough rating for an answer(50% or more) it will select the buzzer to answer.the rules are the same, you can buzz when Alex finishes reading it. watson doesn't always find the most probable answer faster than the men, and if its lower than 50% it can decide to not buzz in.

  • @josephnigelfrye Disagreed my friend, the times of an all mighty government are long gone, today is the corporations age, where not only resources lay on their side, but also the influential power derived from a long chain of immoral leaders, leading into governments that govern for companies instead of for the people.

Today, the corporations are the government.

  • @fescolfaro capitalism in america. that is what our country is all about, don't you know
