You've grown up and developed into a different person like everyone else does in the world and viewers get to see that. And that I hate that to be "successful" on youtube I need to do things I'm uncomfortable doing just for views and subscriber numbers. I need to collab with people I don't even like just to network. I just want to let you know that i have watched your videos for years and although there have been lengthy periods that i have strayed from watching them on a constant basis...i always referred back to them because this is what i like about youtube. i enjoy watching people like you who put out a thought, an idea and make me think about a subject or multiple subjects at once. I get that. I'm a bit frightened of getting into vlogging or making Youtube videos, because of the popularity contest that it can become. I don't want to worry about the number of subscribers I don't have.
But having said that, my firm belief is that if you're producing quality videos, then you will get the subscribers that you want, people behind the screens and the numbers who care about what you say. I think you just won yourself one in me, I came here from fizzylimon. So kudos. Keep going.

John, I completely agree with you. A few years ago, Youtube was where I went to find other teenagers who shared the same thoughts I had. I liked watching your videos that were 8 minutes long; I'd put them on and listen while I cleaned my room, or folded clothes. I simply enjoyed listening. Everything's changed now, and I barely keep up with videos. Maybe it's because we've all gotten older.
Remember when we all met on The Mystery Channel... when we were all (more or less) "unknowns"... that was the beginning of something awesome for a lot of us, I think. I wish we could return to those days. The truth is, Johnman, I want to watch you talk about your life and so many other people do too. We can turn this around and make YouTube into whatever we want it to be.

If you stick a little bit of product placement in there and put the proceeds back into future content, I'm sure viewers will understand. Viewers only get pissed off when you stick so many commercials in that they feel you are consistently wasting their time.

I hate seeing youtubers promoting products themselves in their videos, and I hate adds posted in front and behind videos. However, general adds and advertisement are a needed evil if youtube wishes to continue existence. Most people probably dont realize that Youtube was making Millions of losses untill Google bought it and implemented the add based revenue models you talk about. Top channels hogging viewers with 'freebies' is retarded, but if you just wish to make videos, be thankful you can.

i would be so upset if you ever stopped making videos. your videos were sort of like a reminder out there that someone else had the same interests, humor, and creative hunger as me. i make videos. i think i watched yours because the inspired me and showed me that a random nonesense video or just someone talking was relevant or important because that was something that i had in common. i never had the courage to post mine. youtube used to be something i could relate to. thats gone.

This is a dillema known in management. What YouTube wants to do is found what is popular. One way to do it is to look at likes, comments and subscribers. The problem with that is that you're measuring just that, you're measuring likes, comments and subscribers, not popularity.

Being funny and screaming on camera is how some of the famous youtube people get the're angst out, just like you said... The're not just doing it to get views. When they ask a question or tell us to like the video because of something.. that's not a crime either... Sometimes people ask and i don't like the video so i don't thumbs it up or coment it... if people LIKE what you do they you will have views!

My response: I STARTED watching people on youtube when I was 17...now I'm on my way to 21...it was SO drastically different! When I look back, I watched amazingphil and shanedawson and swiftkaratechop BEFORE they were famous...they were just a blip on the radar. I completely understand that while being silly and making sketches is fun, it's practically how this site works...and it's kinda sad :(
Truth be told, if you wanted to make money or win contests on the backs of your subscribers, we'd all be okay with it. Lord knows how hard it is to make a buck these days. It's definitely reassuring to see people not go that route though! What I've seen from youtubers who make this their job though, is pissed off viewers at any small sign of inconsistency who are just subbed because it's the"popular" thing to do. This is probably something that I'm sure you're more than happy to avoid.
Dude, not to sound like a cheerleader, but just keep doing what you're doing. If you don't care about the money and don't want to make this a career, then all power to you! Keep posting what you want and whether you have 6 or 60,000 subscribers they will be a lot more faithful to you, if that's even the right word. There is a glorious irony to a video about not wanting to do stupid things to get subscribers, favs and comments, getting about 10x the subscribers, favs, and comments of a normal video. Brings a tear to the eye.

2:14 - questions, you don't like asking questions because it's just a ploy. Often times these question can add a more interesting part to your show and you can actually learn things about your subscribers.
2:20 - recent work, Yes, it can be annoying to those who are loyal fans but honestly, I find them rather useful.
2:30 - collaborations, Do these because you've made a bond not for the subs. I love seeing collabs cause I've found most of my subscriptions though a friend of the youtuber

@Cooldude518 Dan got me here too. To go back, I actually like being asked questions and opinions from users. It does increase comments and views when a person does that in a video but it also makes the fans feel like part of the show as you said. I also think that despite money being made on youtube, even the highest subbed youtubers make videos because it's fun. The "fake" youtubers are easy to spot but to each their own. If I had a 100,000+ subs I'd probably get help in a contest too.

But I mean I think with the advertisements I think its a personal choice and Its not just youtube, most major websites on the internet make money through advertisements. I've been on YouTube for years through various accounts and have seen all the changes.... I do miss the old days where you could subscribe to a blogger and they would get big... big meaning 10,000 subscribers so they could still be really personal... However, with the ability to make money from videos comes businesses and these ads are just going to become more prominent as YouTube progresses... :)
I dont think Youtube will change again very soon and its ok if you dont want to advertise your vids like some other youtubers. I think what you should do is get some youtuber friends together and think of new ways of advertising your vdeos and continue being popular. Sure there is the current Youtube System but every system has its work arounds that let you use it the way you like it.

I hate seeing youtubers promoting products themselves in their videos, and I hate adds posted in front and behind videos. However, general adds and advertisement are a needed evil if youtube wishes to continue existence. Most people probably dont realize that Youtube was making Millions of losses untill Google bought it and implemented the add based revenue models you talk about. Top channels hogging viewers with 'freebies' is retarded, but if you just wish to make videos, be thankful you can.

I also just like having a banner on my page XD And it IS nice to make a little bit of money from my videos, but yeah, mostly just like having that banner. i would be so upset if you ever stopped making videos. your videos were sort of like a reminder out there that someone else had the same interests, humor, and creative hunger as me. i make videos. i think i watched yours because the inspired me and showed me that a random nonesense video or just someone talking was relevant or important because that was something that i had in common. i never had the courage to post mine. youtube used to be something i could relate to. thats gone.

"Where do I fit in..." That's the problem. People need to quit asking that damn question and just make videos and stop worrying about what the "PROS" are doing. Put your content out there and people WILL find it. You will NOT be an overnight success. Make videos because you enjoy it. Make them the best you can and shut the hell up.

This is a dillema known in management. What YouTube wants to do is found what is popular. One way to do it is to look at likes, comments and subscribers. The problem with that is that you're measuring just that, you're measuring likes, comments and subscribers, not popularity.
People game the system and it all goes to heck.

When they ask a question or tell us to like the video because of something.. that's not a crime either... My response: I STARTED watching people on youtube when I was 17...now I'm on my way to 21...it was SO drastically different! When I look back, I watched amazingphil and shanedawson and swiftkaratechop BEFORE they were famous...they were just a blip on the radar. I completely understand that while being silly and making sketches is fun, it's practically how this site works...and it's kinda sad :(

Truth be told, if you wanted to make money or win contests on the backs of your subscribers, we'd all be okay with it. Lord knows how hard it is to make a buck these days. It's definitely reassuring to see people not go that route though! What I've seen from youtubers who make this their job though, is pissed off viewers at any small sign of inconsistency who are just subbed because it's the"popular" thing to do. This is probably something that I'm sure you're more than happy to avoid.

Keep posting what you want and whether you have 6 or 60,000 subscribers they will be a lot more faithful to you, if that's even the right word. I am an example of fav-ing and liking a videos because I want to not because I'm told to, and believe me, there are tons of people like me out there who have minds of their own!

2:14 - questions, you don't like asking questions because it's just a ploy. Often times these question can add a more interesting part to your show and you can actually learn things about your subscribers.
2:20 - recent work, Yes, it can be annoying to those who are loyal fans but honestly, I find them rather useful.
2:30 - collaborations, Do these because you've made a bond not for the subs. I love seeing collabs cause I've found most of my subscriptions though a friend of the youtuber

"2:20" If you're a loyal fan you already know the recent work and it sounds like he would rather cater to the loyal vs the ones who are just browsing. It does increase comments and views when a person does that in a video but it also makes the fans feel like part of the show as you said. I also think that despite money being made on youtube, even the highest subbed youtubers make videos because it's fun. The "fake" youtubers are easy to spot but to each their own. If I had a 100,000+ subs I'd probably get help in a contest too.

For me, I struggle to really understand the problem. You say you don't care about screen wipes and ads and all this other stuff which will get your channel views then you don't need to worry about it.
If you're doing this for yourself, as an outlet and a catharsis for you, it doesn't matter whether you have 9 views per video or 9 million. Remember that it's you who matters, your expression, your art, your happiness; and just let everything else go.

I've been on YouTube for years through various accounts and have seen all the changes.... I do miss the old days where you could subscribe to a blogger and they would get big... big meaning 10,000 subscribers so they could still be really personal... However, with the ability to make money from videos comes businesses and these ads are just going to become more prominent as YouTube progresses... :)

I dont think Youtube will change again very soon and its ok if you dont want to advertise your vids like some other youtubers. I think what you should do is get some youtuber friends together and think of new ways of advertising your vdeos and continue being popular. Sure there is the current Youtube System but every system has its work arounds that let you use it the way you like it.
