Not briliant, quite obvious. In Phantom of the opera (1925) there is the same thing. When the phantom comes to a masque as The Red Death, he was painted red in the old copies. von Trier got tired of this (as he saw it) simple technical tricks after Europa, and started to develop the Dogma concept.
Pure brilliance. In a black & white movie, the first (and last) time we see color is to show this insanely bloody suicide.
